My DS5 wants to see King Kong. He really enjoys Star Wars and Lord of the Rings. He's seen the original..but not to sure about the recent release. Any experiences?

My DD, 15, saw it last night and said it was very sad and scary. But she thinks lots of movies are scary, so I'm not sure how much to judge anything by her. There are cannibals in it???

DH & DS7 are at the movies right now seeing it.
DD11 is at a friend's house.
I have the whole house to myself & should be cleaning but ..... no, I'm on the Disboards. :cool1:

I thought about seeing it, but heard that its 3 hours.. I wouldnt be able to sit there that long :goodvibes

My kid knows movies.
He gave it 3 stars. (out of 1 to 5 - with one being bad (stealth) and 5 being the best (lord of the rings fellowship) on the Larry scale of movies.)
While Kong was incredibly realistic and the story true to the 1937 version, he felt the movie was way too long overall - too much romance, not enough action, and the end, with the plains was NEVER ending and - the fall took about 3 years. In other words: they were out of popcorn and pop, the commercials were too long in the beginning and it was now well over 3 hours in those seats - please end the movie.

And this 12 year old will still say the best Kong scene ever is when KingKong 1937 picks up a cannibal and holds him like a cigar and makes his eyebrows go up and down. The giggles are endless at that part.

I was working that day and will wait for it to come out on DVD after his review. I so wanted to see it.

My ds 12 saw it today and was complaining that a "3 year old" was there watching it. I asked him if it was a movie he thought was to scary for a child that young and he said YES! From the mouths of babes :)

I went last night and took my 9 and 10 year olds. The sequence with the natives/zombies or whatever they are is really creepy. I don't think they are cannibals though. The rest of the movie was great- about as scary as Jurassic Park or War of the Worlds.
We all loved the movie- but ds (9) was on my lap for the part with the natives. It was the rockin'est movie I have seen in a long time.
IMO 5 is too young.

I asked my DD who is 12 this question. She said there was one particular scene with the zombie navtives that was SCARY. In her opinion her 8 & 9 yr old sisters would have a hard time with this movie and they've seen the Lord of the Rings movies and loved them.

Good luck whatever you decide!

I thought it was to scary and to long for any child younger than about 10. The showing that we were at had a lot of restless chilren in it due to the length. My DD9 won't be seeing it but she doesn't want to so it was an easy decision.

I bawled! Yes, I am a 26 yr old woman who bawled at a computer animated gorilla being hurt. :umbrella:

Sorry, what was the question? ;)
I know I have been like this with ANY movie involving an animal being hurt since I was very young. I guess that might be something to think about as well.

My son, nephew and niece kept staring at me sobbing until I said,"C'mon! Are you here to watch me or the movie?" At least I heard a good number of other people making sniffling sounds at the end...I was surprised at how emotional I felt--esp. since I knew the story and had just seen the 1933 version the night before!

I agree....we took our DS7 & DS9, however we took them out for the entire native scene. Also the worm/centipede? scene as well.

Even the other parts are pretty intense but we were prepared for that, it is rated PG13! The only other PG13 movie they've seen is spiderman.

Just be prepared to leave during these parts or at least bring a blanket...they can cover their heads completely & miss the creepy parts! :goodvibes

We saw it Saturday. My kids are 10 and 12. They really liked it. Though we all agreed that the native scene and the worm/bug scene were way over the top on the creepy scale.

There were two small kids in the theater....one looked about 3 (we couldn't see him from where he sat though) and the other was probably about 4. He sat behind us. He was absolutely entralled by the whole thing (sat forward in his seat) and we were amazed that he didn't get creeped out at the stuff that bothered us (DD was the one to point out how he was handling it). The weird thing was that he cried during the lovey type scenes. Very strange.

That said. I think this movie really deserves a PG13 rating, and parents should take it seriously. If your children haven't been to movies that are scary or intense before...they should not see this one.

Let me tell you, i'm 37, and i just bawled!! I havent cried like that since Finding Neverland. I came out of the movie with bloodshot eyes.... i just left so sad...... :( Dont get me wrong it was an awesome movie.... the special effects are just out of this world..... Well, on a good note.... I didnt realize how much i also would like Adrien Brody.... i just fell in love with him....

Now, I'm a crier. And when I say "I'm a crier" I mean that I cried at the Dog movie preview BEFORE King Kong and I am also known to cry at Hallmark commercials.

I didn't cry at all in King Kong. It was moving, but just not a crying movie for me. I think I was too stressed out from the zombie scene two hours earlier. That scared the bejeezus out of me!!!

For whoever said there "wasn't enough action"- what movies DO you watch???? OMG the action was nonstop. I felt stressed out after the movie- and DBF said "wow... I feel like I've really been to the jungle or something". :rotfl: And this is coming from people who have seen and enjoyed all the Lord of the Rings movies.

Loved the movie- quite stressful and I wouldnt have been able to handle it as a 10 year old... but that's just me. If you've got a hearty 10 year old- go for it!! :flower:

I agree with everyone else. My almost 10yr old dd did not want to go, and I am glad she didn't. I took ds12 and he was fine, but the natives were really nasty, and my dd would have freaked. I would not let a 5 year old see it.

I saw it yesterday. I think it's way too intense for a 5 yr old, though there were some there. The "creatures", large centipedes, cockroaches, worm things, etc, were the worst part for me and I closed my eyes several times. The natives could be a bit frightening also.

I thought it was a good movie but not a 4 stars as some local reviewers gave it. There were several scenes that were way too long, the dinosaur chase and others. I hate to admit it, but I fell asleep during the movie, only for little catnaps that I can blame on medication.

The scenery and special effects were amazing.

Lord of the Rings is one of my favorite movies and when it was done, I wished for another hour. At one point during KK, I asked my dh how much longer. I'm still glad I went to see but to answer the OP's question again, too much for most 5 year olds.
