We're heading to Disney Dec. 6th. I was wondering if anyone has had luck w/just calling them right before arriving (or even upon arrival) and asking if they can upgrade us. I'm hoping with the economy being so bad, there will be lots of rooms at the higher end properties that they would, out the generosity of their hearts, move us to?? I know, this is probably wishful thinking!

CRO has NOTHING to do with upgrading you. If something is available youre paying full price for it if you call.

If you call, you would ruin any chance you have at an upgrade when you get there. You should wait till you get there and ask if there is a chance you can get a Complimentary upgrade. We have done that and got upgraded at the POLY, AKL, and BW.

When you get to the reservation desk at the resort you booked, you ask for an upgrade to another resort?

Have others had this request granted?

The odds of that happening are slim to none. If the resort overbooked someone they will be the ones to tell you when you check in that youre being moved/upgraded

I have never asked, but have received a couple of upgrades, but we travel at slower times.

You can call and ask for an upgrade, but if one's available, you'll have to pay for it.

You might want to see if any discounted rooms are available for your stay. It wouldn't be an upgrade, but perhaps you can get a good deal on a better resort. Have you checked all the discount codes out now? Check first, then call. Rarely will the reservations people tell you if some special offer is available--and they'll never tell you if you don't specifically ask. There are all kinds of discounts floating around. Sorry, I'm not familiar with what may be available for your dates. Check the Codes and Rates board here.

If you ask for an upgrade during check-in, the best you can reasonably hope for--and not expect--is an upgrade to a better room at your resort, possibly one with a better view or a preferred location. It's extremely unusual that anyone is upgraded to another resort at check-in, although it does happen on rare occasions. I think your resort has to be overbooked or have other difficulties in order for this to occur. Definitely not the usual course of events, and after reading the DISboards for a few years, I've never heard of someone getting upgraded to another resort because they asked, only because WDW--for whatever reason--had to move them.

Well, duh, we ARE on the Codes and Rates board!

Check at the top, there should be stickies and threads listing all the currently available discounts. Look for your dates of stay and see what applies. If they're not all listed here, then go to mousesavers.com, where all the available discounts are definitely listed.
