I want an external hard drive. 60 gigs would work, 80 gigs would be nice. I don't think at this point I need bigger. It's mainly to back up music and digital photos from the past 10+ years.

Looking around I rarely see 60-80 gigs. Am I missing a site maybe? I checked ebay and the only 60-80 gigs I easily see are the new fangled thin ones (which are cool but spendy).

Is there a particular brand I should be looking at? I don't want a big honker as I would keep it w/the laptop but I don't want to spend over say $140.

And why oh why do they feel Alaska shipping must be jacked up. I can't believe they won't go to the PO :( (ebay folks). I can't afford to spend as much on shipping as the darn product costs...

We were looking at these a few weeks ago at Best Buy. Try their on line site. www.bestbuy.com

I believe the smallest we saw was an 80 and it was around $189 at Office Max

Not sure what stores you have up there - if you have Fry's Electronics they are great for these things. DH just built a new computer for himself. He does a lot of purchasing and loved this site, and they had great service:

I wish I had these stores. I am the kind of person that wants it now. But unless I can get it @ Fred Meyers  or Costcos, I have to order it. The shipping to Alaska is amazing...

HOWever I will be in AZ next week, so I may look then. However my stuff is on my desktop. I was trying to avoid putting it on the laptop.

Our Costco here sell external drives ranging from 40 to 180 gig

If you are in the Phoenix area there is a Frys Electronics near Baseline and Interstate 10. They really do seem to have higher end products at more competitive prices than the other large franchise stores.

Thanks so much! Wow I love the help I get on this board...

DSNY FN you're kidding me? Dang I've been looking for one for a long time... I keep checking our Costcos. They've cut back on the electronics :(

Try newegg.com. My friends and I have used them before and they are very reliable to buy from. They have a 120 gig drive for $148, along with lots of other good buys for external hard drives.

Go to newegg.com and search for "USB Hard Drive", Scroll down past the drive enclosures. About half way down the page you should start seeing harddrives.

My old internal hard drives are becoming external ones. When I upgrade my hard drive, I buy a kit that makes the old internal an external. I think it costs $99 or something. They work fine!

Nope I am dead serious they have lots of computer equipment.

This would work if I had a spare internal laying around :D I was looking at the external and they looked like an internal to me or a lot like one...
