I am asking for my dad. He will be 85 in May and found out a few months ago that he has psorasis. He gets red patches all over his arms and legs. He is using the prescription ointment the doctor prescribed, but it really isn't helping any! I have always told him how much great advice I get from you guys and he aksed me to see if anyone out there has any ideas for him.

Thanks, in advance! :bounce:

I have it badly on my legs, elbows and behind each ear. My doctor perscribed several ointments in varing strengths wil no success. Finall I found a over the counter tar ointment called MG217 that has worked wonders to keep the itch and white patching under control. It's a bit expensive ($13.49 for a 3 1/2 oz. jar. but in certainlly has worked wonders for me.

Mine's mainly on my head, and Denorex has worked for the most part for over 10 years. I think the cold weather and having the heater on are really having a bad effect on it though; it's out of control. So I finally have a derm appt in 2 wks to get an Rx. My elbows haven't been a problem in years, so I can't help there. I've been wondering if fatty acid supplements would help with this. Does anyone know? (I guess I could do a search, but I'm all googled out doing research for work.)

My husband has it - but only on his head. However, it gets pretty bad. he uses tar shampoo and believe it or not just plain ol' cortisone and that seems to help. He finds that being in the sun helps as much as anything - and keeping his stress under control.

I have psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. The creams didn't help me much. I now take methotrexate and it has made a world of difference. It has risks, however, and I'm not sure it is recommended in the elderly. Check out psoriasis.org

it runs in my DHs family and they have tried everything and found that pine tar soap works the best. My DHs DR. recommended it, and it seems to keep it under control.

For those with scalp psoriasis, have you used the Neutrogena T-gel overnight treatment? I just bought some today, because I wash my hair at night, and my spot is flaky by morning. Creams are no good because it's right on my hairline. I've been wearing my hair differently in an attempt to cover it. This stuff is supposed to be non-greasy. Hopefully this will start working. I'm sure it will all be under control by the time my derm appointment comes around, as always. :D

You know, one of the long-term side effects of topical steroid use is hair loss. With that and all the other side effects, I'm not using them unless my Dr decides it's necessary.

Hmmm... just read that this says to wash your hair in the morning after you use it. Great. Can't do that. Anybody want a free bottle of this stuff? :D
