P.S. Am enjoying everyone else's stories! Glad I'm not the only one.
I had an "uncle" who was ever the bachelor. He was a good friend of my dad's and a good friend of the family's. I remember when I was about 10, he came over for Christmas with his friend Harriet. I thought it was SOOO cool that he'd bought us all Christmas presents -- I got clown slippers, big, bulky blue and white check slippers with a clown head at the toe. Way cool, and all the more cool since he bought them 'specially for me. He was habitually late to everything, and when my little sister (7 yrs. younger than me) was born, my dad asked him to be her godfather. My dad told him lil sis's christening was an hour earlier than it actually was. When we arrived at the church for the christening, there was Uncle Bill sitting on the porch steps of the Church with his head in his hands. He said, "My God, I'm 45 minutes late! I missed my own Goddaughter's Christening!" Dad said, "Don't worry, Bill, you're not 45 minutes late. You're 15 minutes early!" I'll never forget that. He remained an icon in our family. Sadly, he passed away this Sunday. But, I will never forget feeling spoiled by my neat "uncle" even though he wasn't related by blood.
Kids are precious, and life is short! Spoil them while they're young, and you can afford it!
