I'm looking for a particular costume online for MNSSHP and I'm not having much luck. I've emailed a woman from ebay that sells handmade costumes, but I was wondering if anyone knew of anyone else that sews and does online business (even from ebay)? I don't know what to look under in ebay as far as seamstress. I would think that would be offered somewhere on there. The costume I want looks pretty easy to make I would think, pretty simple. I don't sew at all.

Thanks!

You might check at a local fabric store. They will know a ton of folks who sew for a living, and many of the employees there will also do projects.

I can sew!! I'll make your costume if you take me with you!

That could be an expensive costume DISshopkeeper! :p Do you have an AP already?!? ;)

ahutton, I called JoAnn's. I was on hold for forever... I'll call them again tomorrow and try. Thanks!

My sister in law sews. She made her own wedding dress. From scratch! No pattern even. She's amazing.

I'm not sure if she could do it for you, but I can always ask her, though I agree there are a lot of places near you that may be easier like fabric stores, etc.

Can you tell us what the costume is?

Hello! I called JoAnn's and they don't keep a list. :(
Hancock's is closed for now cause their roof blew off the other day in a storm!
The woman from ebay did email me back. She said she would custom make one for me for $70. (It is Alice.) Her child costumes look very nice and she has had wonderful feedback.
Does that seem like a good price?
I guess I'll just be Alice every year!
I've seen alot of Alice costumes online, but I'm only 4'10". The adult costumes I think would drown me and the child costumes I don't think would fit in the bodice. Plus, some of them look pretty cheap for what they're asking and you can't return them if they don't fit.
It just looks simple to make! Sometimes I really wish I knew how to sew!
Hubby has already gathered most of his costume for the Mad Hatter sooo...I need to find something!
This is a cheap quick get away trip for us. I just booked PC the other day. I hate to spend too much money.
Thoughts?
I guess we'd have more fun at MNSSHP if we dressed up, uh? We're hoping to go to it on the 3rd so I need to decide soon.

I don't think that is a bad price for a custom fitted costume. Poor quality children costumes can run around 30-40. I guess you will have to provide the material.

Lori

I would also check with any sewing machine stores in town, also local theatre groups and local HS home economics departments.

I'd rather have someone in town make the costume so it can be fitted.

If the $70 includes the fabric, I think its a very good price. Even if you have to buy the fabric, it would still be a good price. The cost of fabric can be quite high depending on what you buy. The costumes that you buy in the stores can run $30-$50 and they are crap.

Ya, I got offline and started thinking about it and thought it was a good price. It includes materials and shipping.

Guess I just need to run it by hubby. I showed him one costume and he complained that it was $40! I don't think he has a clue cause his has been pretty easy and cheap to put together, I now just need to buy a vest and tie set off ebay and then I saw a hat I need to order for him.

We wanted to get away for a couple days and this ended up being the soonest weekend we could go. It just happened MNSSHP was then and we've never been to that before. Hubby is pretty game usually, so I thought it would be fun to dress up!

You're right though, we usually spend around $40 on the kids' costumes, too.

I sew, and $70 would be a decent price IMHO for a simple custome like that. Fabric may be a little bit more expensive to just up and make a costume because the seamstress will not have the luxury of waiting till it goes on sale.

Hmmm, if a Seamstress is a female, what would that make me? A Seamster? :D

Here is a pic of a Cinderella Dress I made for DD:

FroggyinArk, that is funny. The woman I emailed from ebay is from Texas, too...
It would be "a small world after all" if it was her! ;)
Does she have a website, too?

i honestly dont know if she has a website, shes really surprised us by becoming so crafty and talented,, she made her own wedding cake,, did a great job,, made her own dress,, when she left our house she could burn ice cream and couldnt wash a drtess much less make one.. she was the teenage terror we adopted and got of fdrugs and out of school,, she straightened out a lot but we couldnt get her intrested in the domestic arts at all,, her idea of cooking was open acan and pop into microwave. she made htisdress and the cake,, thats her and her hubby at the weding afew weeks ago:)

You might want to post this on the cooking, scraping, crafting board. They are extremely helpful & very friendly over there.

Edited to add: My local Joann's Etc. has books of nothing but cosutme patterns. I also recall seeing a pattern for kitchen accessories that included aporns. (It had everything from placemats to appliance covers to aprons in one pattern.) They do have a web site at http://www.joannfabrics.com/catalog.jhtml;$sessionid$L1NVRUIAAERMEP4SY5FBHOR50LD2WEPO?CATID=25180

I've looked through a bunch of pattern collections, and I can't really find a good pattern that I could use for this. The dress would be relatively straightforward, but the apron is unusual in how it's designed. I'm not sure I could 'freehand' do an apron. I'll keep looking around.

Wow, everyone is so nice here. :grouphug:

FroggyinArk, your daughter looks great. Beautiful cake, too! Congrats! princess:

jfulcer, that is so nice of you to even look thru patterns! Gotta love the DIS.

Hubby said to just go ahead and order the costume this morning. I think I might wait a week just to make sure cause this trip was planned late in the game and I'm still nervous something will happen with his work. I still need to order MNSSHP tickets, too!

After looking thru the Disney catalog at their adult costumes $70 doesn't seem so bad. And this way it will fit since I'm so short. (Course, our room per night at PC is only $49!)

So everyone agrees here $70 is a decent price? ::yes::
