There is a baby racoon, that looks like it has a broken leg, living in the woods next to us.

I have called Animal Control and they say they cant's really help unless it rabid

So if we caught it and brought it to a vet...could they help it?

Is it worth the troble?

There should be a wildlife rehabilitation place that will help if they can. It may be in your phone book. Preshi would be able to tell you more about that though.

I would leave it alone. Unless you know what you are doing, it would cause more stress for the racoon.

That's pretty silly that they won't take it. It's not like you can always tell when an animal is rabid. When I worked with wildlife, we assumed all raccoons were rabid and refused to take them. So it might be hard to get someone to take it if you're in a rabies-prevalent area. If you go to a private vet, you're going to have to trap it yourself and pay for it yourself. I would never try to catch a raccoon on my own. Try the SPCA or Humane Society. Animal Control's purpose is to protect humans from animals and will almost definitely euthanize the raccoon regardless of the extent of the injury. The other two are in place to help animals, so they'd be more likely to help it. However, a wildlife rehabber is still your best bet.
