Anyone in Hammond or Gary, Indiana

This really isn't Disney related but I hoped someone here could help. I am planing on stopping for the night on my way to visit a friend in Illinois and we thought we might stop in Hammond or Gary, can anyone recommend a nice but cheap hotel in either of those areas still staying on I94??? Is there any area's you would avoid??? We will be arriving kinda late at night so don;t want to vear off the highway.

On i94 there is a wonderful mall area on hwy 30 and 65 for I94 I would stop in Portage IN

Thre is several tiny hotel chains there, its well before you get to Gary, and Hammond...

I grew up in Portage IN, and I am often intimadated by Hammond and Gary IN -

I take the skyway into and thru Chicago...

How close to Chi are you going to get??? Check out the Chicago Tribune site for traffic.. there is MAJOR construction on 80/94 in Indiana between I 65 and the Ill state line.

Funny you should say this because I have always felt the same way about Portage, Gary,Crown Point, Wolcott,Cedar Lake,MartinsVille and Valpo.

I'm not intimadated by these places but more like ((afraid))I wouldn't be caught dead going thru those towns especially at night.

Anyway Hockeychic while heading west on I94 there are a couple of hotels on Kennedy Ave which is next to I94.

There is also a Best Western off of I94 in Lansing Ill on Torrence Ave.

No matter where you stop be safe

Where in IL? You are only like 30 inutes from IL. Also keep in mind that Gary was the murder capitol in the world 2 years ago. Hammond is just as bad so DON"T stop in either.

Yeah, I would just like to reiterate what the others said. I would not stay overnight in Gary or Hammond. You could stop in LaPorte which isn't far and still off of 80 or even Mishawaka which is far safer and still not too far. Mishawaka would have a good selection of hotels/motels off the toll road too!

Have to agree with you there. From what I understand when Chicago tore down the projects many and I do mean many people flocked over to Hammond, East Chicago and Gary over the years.

From what I understand, the people in Hammond and East Chicago are not pleased with this at all.

I have family in Porter/Chesterton area. It is a nice place. There is a resort - Indian River I believe (could be Indian Oaks...), that is very close to the highway and is a VERY nice place. My cousin had his wedding reception there. There also were a couple hotels across the street, I believe one is a Hampton or Holiday Inn... If you search for either of those cities you should be fine.

the Portage exit from I94 is at Hwy 20 (an east west rd) and ?? which goes into the steel mills...

25 years ago we stayed at the Howard Johnsons there, and across the street was a Holiday Inn, today, they have different names!! I would stay at either hotel.

As for the traffic 4 weeks ago I took the skyway I80/90 to Angola IN, and around Chicago its down to one lane... on the way home, I had to do a Uturn and put my teenage boys on the south shore train to get them home in time to catch thier rides, there was an accident, that took 8 hours to clear - then I went home on the 94, and I stayed on 94 to the Dan Ryan, usually that route takes me over to 294 - the tollway - the tollway was backed up.... every major east west route is having major repairs...

I refuse to go back -

also in my mind I often get confused when I exit to I65 in Merriville/Hobart off of I94 - its a very populated heavily traffic area.. I would definately stop before Gary in Portage or stop at the Torrence Exit...

I'd recommend stopping sooner (farther east) and avoid "The Region" altogether. Definately Portage is the closest I'd go.
