For the past two weeks or so, I have been spending a good portion of each day designing various quilt patterns (drawing them on paper) that I hope to try this winter..:goodvibes

One design I have is a "box" - of which you can see the front, top, and one side.. I want this to appear three dimensional (I think that's the term I'm looking for) and I'm wondering how I can accomplish this with the use of "colors"..

In drawing and shading it on paper, it looks as though I would have to use 3 shades of the same color to get the effect I'm going for - light for the front, medium for the top, and dark for the side..

Does that sound right? And if not, what else can you suggest?

Thanks! :goodvibes

Is it the tumbling block pattern you are thinking of?

Here are some pictures, you can get a good idea of colors and patterns here.

This one here is similar to what I designed:

But I can't quite tell from the photo is each sections was a different "shade".. To me it looks more like the front was the same shade as the side, but also included a "pattern" on it.. Are you seeing it that way too?

On the example in this link, it looks to me like the top of the block is the lightest, the right side of the block is a medium shade and the left side of the block is a dark shade.

I think it depends where you want the "shadow" which is the darker square. In both pictures it looks like a light, medium and dark color. You can put the darker color anywhere you want.
