Anyone have problems getting II exchanges?

While we have this II thread going I'd like to ask another question, which I think I've asked before, but can't remember the answer. Say I'd like to do an exchange for an II resort sometime in April 2006. I put in my request to DVC and the exchange is found maybe a year ahead of time - do I have to have the points sitting in my DVC account at the time the exchange is found (April 2005) or just when the exchange occurs (April 2006)? Can I borrow points from my next use year for the exchange? Finally, can I merge points from two different contracts to make up the points needed?

One final question - is anyone having any luck getting exchanges at the Westin Resort at St. John, Virgin Islands.

Jlieblaw - Hawaii can be easy exchange if you are not particular. Dean has a list. For most of his list - you need to get on the exchang list NOW - he suggested 2 full years to look for a good resort in Hawaii.

Wolfpackfan - if you are only wanting that one resort - you might be better off joining tug and seeing if an owner there wants to exchange with you.

II is not really set up for one resort - one area yes - but not one resort - you could be waiting a long time - or you might get lucky and have it immediately.

you both need to post your own messages separately to get more and better responses.

when DVC makes the exchange (that you have okayed) then they take the points. the points can be borrowed or taken from other contracts that you own.

with II or other outside exchangs -points are points -doesn't matter where they come from.

I think DVC has some leeway but basically you have to have the points available WHEN you accept the exchange.

jlieblaw, you have several options. First is to use points for a Concierge collection stay a nice but expensive use of points. Second is to list as many resorts and weeks as you can possibly do and be comfortable with. This raises a couple of problems. First, only some of the resorts are a reasonable trade using DVC. Second, you're likely limited to one week and possibly one island. That's not flexible enough to be likely to match. Certainly put in a request with II but get something else like a refundable cash reservations as back up. Also explore direct exchanges and timeshare rentals, especially through TUG at www.tug2.net.
