Youngest ds is due for third surgery to correct his cleft palate (first two were done in China and did not, apparently, have optimal results). Anyone have a child who has undergone p-flap surgery before? I've been reading about it, but if someone could share their experiences with me, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks.

WOW, something I know. My DD4 had a submucous cleft palate and had the surgery done this past March. She had the p-flap done. The DR was able to get 2cm of length to her palate which was great. He said normal is 1cm. She had 2 holes that we didn't know about. The surgery was about 3hrs long, not to bad. But I did get antsy, it's my baby! Her DR put a stitch in her tongue and it was removed later that day. SHe had about 70 stitches in her mouth. She did pretty good, but she is very STUBBORN!!!!! She wouldn't drink at all, so we ended up in the hospital for 2 nights. She would cry out alot and I made sure they stayed on top of the pain meds. She also had her 6th set of tubes done at that same time.

She was on a liquid diet for 4wks, then soft food after that. She did go to pre-school. I just packed her 2 bottles of instant breakfast (this was her favorite) and a cup to drink out of it. No straws or sippy cups, they didn't want any suction to happen. She really did good with the surgery. I think tonsils were worst for her.

My DD4 aslo has SPD so she was a little more difficult to handle at times. If there are any more questions, just drop me a line. I so understand wanting to learn more. I called and talked to her DR one day to find out more info.

Good Luck, it's amazing how much of a difference I can hear in her voice. The hyper nasal is gone!!!!
