We were thinking about possibly getting one of these eventually, but I have no idea how difficult it is to have it installed, and how much it would cost. Does any have any rough price estimates or websites that may have some info? Thanks!

Sorry, I don't have any prices for you, as my DH installed both of our systems (one on present house and one on our house in Orlando) himself.

It's a lot of hard work, but he mapped it out, dug the trenches for the pipes, and hooked everything up himself! They are not "automatic", though -- he has to go out and manually turn them on by zone, but hey, they work and probably cost a fraction of the $$ it would've cost.

One thing, though. On the one on our present house, he ended up pulling his back out doing it, on our wedding anniversary, and I ended up at the ER with him by ambulance! His week's vacation he took to install the system turned out to be flat on his back.

Good luck with your estimates. It's probably worth it if you can't or aren't able to do it yourself.

We have one, and it's 8 zones and does turn in automatically. It depends on the size of your yard as well. We have 1/2 acre and we paid $3000 approx, I can't remember it was 2 years ago. We only had the lawn done, not the landscaping, since most of our landscaping can be reached by the lawn sprinklers. To have the landscaping done was going to cost another $3000.

Ours was around $2,700 for approx. 1/2 acre of lawn. Like the other poster, we didn't do the flower beds either.

Pros: our lawn looks great, you can set the timer to whatever time of day/length of watering you want/need, our water bills went down since before we would just turn on the sprinklers and forget that they were on.

Cons: inital cost

We had hoses and sprinklers all over the place and were constantly "moving the sprinklers". Our water bills for the summer months were on average $900. Now, the sprinklers come on at dawn, every other day, from May-Oct and our water bills are more like $600.

As far as installation, the company literally cuts and folds back your lawn, installs the system, and lays the lawn back down. You can see the strips where this was done for a few weeks, until it grows back together.

There is a small amount of maintenance required each spring to turn them on and in the fall to turn them off for the winter.

I don't have one yet. I think we are going to have the grounds professionally landscaped this summer and I'm going to try to convince dh to include this too :)

Best $3000 bucks I ever spent. Your lawn will thank you. Ours was installed on an existing lawn, like Jenn's, and they do a good job not destroying it on installation. My only regret - I didn't do the flower beds either

I'm putting one in right now!
I found a great site whether you are doing it yourself or having somebody do it, you can't help but understand it after reading this :
