Anyone have a wall-mounted flatscreen TV above an electric fireplace?

We're thinking of doing this, and wondering if there would be any heat concerns re: the TV. Not sure how much heat the fireplace gives off (just started the research process), and want to make sure the TV won't be damaged.
Any thoughts?

Thank you!

Mine gives off very little heat... in fact, so little that we don't use it for heat, but just the "look"....

We don't have our TV there, but my BIL does, and I like it there... but my wife HATES it there. She says it is too high for her to watch comfortably.

You can buy a wall mount that tilts down they have 3 kinds.

You are not supposed to put them near a hear source...I would call the manufacturer.

I know... I have one for my bedroom TV, and she hates that too! :rotfl: ( and that isn't even as high as my BIL's ).... maybe it need more tilt....

DF wanted to do this with our new electric fireplace... But it puts out quite a bit of heat so we are not going to do this.

I can leave the house on 62 and within 2 hrs the living room will be a comfortable 70 :cool1: I think this will really help the keep the propane bills down - the electric may go up but that would still be worth it :cool1:

I think it is a not-so-good idea. Televisions are supposed to be placed at eye level, so unless you are really really tall, or watch television standing up, above the fireplace is simply too high.

This article goes over a bit of it:

http://gadgetwise.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/03/20/tv-height-theres-more-than-one-answer/

It suggests that angling the television downward 15 degrees addresses the concern, but in reality it merely mitigates it a bit.

I personally like my television a bit higher than eye level, but not (essentially) four feet higher than eye level.

Our flat screen is above the electric fireplace. We had to get used to having it a little higher, but now we don't even think about it. DH is usually laid back in the recliner, so it's just right. :)

The flat screens above the fireplace look great in magazine ads, I think tha'ts way too high for real life. The issue of heat close to the tv is yet another issue.:confused3

Ours is on the wall above a real fireplace. The TV instruction manual should state what temperature the TV can take. When we were trying to figure out if it would work, DH started a fire and then stuck an outdoor thermometer up there. It was way too hot. So, we have a black shelf that acts as a mantle and blocks the heat. Now, we can have a fire without the TV getting too hot.

So, it can be done, but you need to check out the temperature.

Hope that helps!

We have a flatscreen mounted above our gas fireplace (came with the house). There is a small mantle between the fireplace and the TV so that seems to deflect the heat. Above the mantle is not hot at all.

In terms of height, we were actually surprised that it doesn't bother us at all. I think this probably depends on the size of your room though. We have a nice-sized room, so our chairs and sofa are a fair distance back from the TV. With the distance you really don't feel like you're looking up very much.

our tv shelf is a built in above gas fireplace. We have always had our tv high in family room and love it. We got plasm tv 1.5 yrs ago and that is where it is. No problems with tv and angle is fine for us.
