For those of you who don't even know what a puggle is......it's a mix between a beagle and a pug. It's such a cutie of a dog.

I'm contemplating getting a dog for my boys for Christmas and I'd either like to get a puggle or a pomeranian. We've had a pomeranian before but had to get rid of her when my second son was born.

But for those of you who have a puggle, do they get big? Like bigger than a beagle? I'm not looking for anything bigger than that.

My neighbor does and I can't stand that dog. She constantly jumps up into your face and tries to bite you. She is highstrung and just nuts! Even her husband can't stand that dog. Her dog is more pug size. Another neighbor has one and that one is also highstrung but not as bad. His dog us very big like a beagle. Would your sons really want a pomeranian? They are such girly dogs. Cute but girly.

I am NOT flaming you in any sense, but $550 and $650 for mutts? WOW!

I (do you see the I) can't believe people are getting this kind of money for mixing breeds.

:rotfl: My DH grew up with Poms and he still wants one. I agree with you, they are very girly dogs.

It's a designer dog, i.e. a mutt! I don't have a problem with someone going to their local shelter and getting a mixed dog, but actually paying hundreds of dollars for a mix seems a bit off to me. The whole idea behind breeding is to improve the standards of the breed and to get rid of the problems with them. Also, with designer dogs there is no guarantee that the dog will look like any of those pics you've seen. The dog may look predominately like one breed and barely like another. I bet if you went on petfinder.com you'd find several puggles for free

It is crazy that these dogs years ago were called MUTTS...now they are Puggles, and cockapoos, and who the hexk knows what else...I should mate my cocker spaniel with a Rottweiller then I could make Cockrots!!!

that was funny!

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

to the OP...I have to agree with the poster who said to try petfinder to see if you can find a mix similar to the one you are looking for.

With mixed breeds, there is no "guarantee" about how they will really be. But you can be pretty sure that the mix you are considering will not get bigger than a beagle (unless either of the parents were of "mixed" heritage).

Think of it this way...say everyone in your family for many generations has had brown eyes. Then you have a child with blue eyes...where did this gene pop up? You would have to research your geneaology back until you found where that blue eyed gene was dominant. And it could be pretty far back.

Good breeders do the genealogy for the dogs they are breeding...this lets them know what attributes to "expect".

With mixed breeds, that's really hard to do. And many of the folks breeding these "designer" breeds are doing it for the money, not necessarily for temperament or health or even for specific qualities (like less allergenic, although there are breeders trying this).

My suggestion is to look at the qualities of both beagles and pugs and realize that any pup of these two breeds could be like either (or both) of them. Beagles tend to have strong prey drives and can be very hyper (so need LOTS of exercise). Pugs can have some health problems (related to the smooshed face) and can also be a little hyper.

Please don't pay a puppy mill for a mutt. They are very poorly bred and you will have no guarantees about the dog. There are TONS of mutts on petfinder.com dying (literally) to have a loving home.

There are actually many of these designer mutts on there. Poor breeders and puppy brokers scammed uneducated buyers into buying a dog and promising all kinds of things about the puppy. Well, pup grows up some and the pup is NOT what the scam artist had promised. Pup is immediately turned over to a shelter or rescue. There are lots of expensive designer mutts being put to sleep in our shelters each day. If the pug-beagle mix look looks cute to you, check out petfinder.

For me, the pug and the beagle are two breeds that can have serious health and temperment issues if not bred well. I could never imagine breeding them together - that dog very likely could have ALL the bad traits and be one heck of a dog to train and maintain.

If you want a Pom, you can start researching quality breeders. There are lots of great lists out there to look for in a breeder. REmember that most good breeders will not sell a Xmas pet - so just be ready for that. XMas is the worst time to bring an animal into a home and good breeders don't want their animals to go through that so they will purposely not breed their dogs to have pups around that time. You could still "give" them a xmas present of a dog but instead go get the dog the next month when things calm down. That will also allow your entire family to meet the puppies and for the breeder to decide which is best for you.

Another option is to rescue a pom. I am currently contemplating a 3rd dog from this rescue: http://www.hua.org/ Most of these dogs are puppy mill rescues, they are the momma and daddy dogs of the pets people buy from pet stores and internet ads. They live the worst life imaginable but are often saved through an auction when they are no longer useful to the kennel. I saw several poms on there.

Take this quiz to figure out what dog breed may be best for your family. Since it's a 10-15 year commitment, it's imperitive that it fit all your needs. I find this one the most accurate of all that I've taken: http://aolsvc.decisionguides.aol.com/dogs/guide.jsp?page=1 Course this test will only cover true breeds in which temperment and qualities are consistent.

Good luck in your search!

I have a mixed breed, everyone calls her a "yorkiepoo" but she's a mutt. I didn't pay for her either. And it's true that you won't know what they look like, my dog doesn't look like she has any poodle in her at all, but I've seen some that don't look yorkie at all.

Sounds like good info from everyone. I never considered that the dog might look like one breed more than the other and everything else that you've said.

And yep, both my boys love Pomeranians. We used to have one (when they were VERY small--so they don't really remember her) but they have pictures of her plus our neighbor has one also.

I will also be checking out those sites. Thanks so much.

I also agree about the designer mutt dogs. Lots of money basically for a mixed breed dog. There are plenty of those in the shelters that really need homes.

Why did you "get rid" of the Pomeranian? It makes me nervous when people say this, then a few years later , are looking for another dog.

I work with a rescue group and see way too many pets be put down. Will you "get rid" of this one too, if it doesn't fit your lifestyle or isn't the dog you thought? May sound harsh, but ever take a walk through the shelters?

My first question would be why you got rid of your last dog? You say you 'had to get rid of her'. Why?

As for puggles - they are mutts and as usual when it comes to animals I agree wholeheartedly with Aimeedyan. Their is one in my dog training class and that particular one is pretty small.

My best friend has a puggle - that dog is an idiot! My friend hates the dog but her DH who is also an idiot (IMO) won't get rid of it.

She is slightly taller than the average pug and not as plump.

Despite many hours of professional and home training this dog has no manners. She jumps on people, the furniture and then barks non stop when sent outside. She steals the pacifier out of the babys mouth and can't be unsupervised at any time. The only time there is peace of mind is when she is crated at night. She pee's when excited which is most of the time and therefore has been near impossible to house train.

She is a runner and if she gets loose we can chase her for hours. The dog trainer said that the traits of the 2 dogs do not make a good combination. She has eaten the sprinkler and drip system, numerous pairs of shoes and just about anything she can get her hands on.

My friend has finally had to resort to a shock collar and even that does not have much affect on idiot dog.

This dog was $800 and then racked up almost 4K in vet bills due to a severe worm infestation that then manifested to pneumonia. This was a pet shop/breeder issue.

My friend paid $900.00 for a puggle last Christmas because as she said, "They're the hottest dogs right now" He's out of control. Like others have said they tend to be "bitey". I have a pom and she's a cutie. My 14 year old DS loves her. She's a bit chunky so she looks a bit like a hedgehog. Puggles, you can find at all the shelters, now. Unfortunately, hybrid is the fancy word for mutt.

I have a pug and I have to agree with the other posters not to pay for a mutt. You really don't know what you're getting into, and there is no pedigree for mutts.

If you go for a pom, please check into reputable breeders. I made the mistake of buying my pug from the first place I went to. The lady was 9 months pregnant and her DH didn't like pugs at all. Oscar was 4 months old when we got him, he's almost 9 now and there are still problems with him that we have that I believe are due to his first months at the breeder's. Her DH didn't want the pugs in the house so she built a nice kennel out back. I didn't know at the time that pugs can't take the heat or the cold though and should always be in the house. After reading up on them at home, I realized the questions I should have asked and what I should have been looking for. It didn't help either that I took my two DD's with me. Of course, they would want the first one they saw. It's a whole lot easier finding out information now with the internet.
