Anyone have a Pomeranian?

Would love to know about the bread, I have always had Long-hair Chihuahuas. Not sure what type of toys, puppy food, etc..to get. Are they good with kids? Thanks

No, they are not good with kids. They are high-strung dogs that bark A LOT, and they can be nippy.

Every person I've known (elderly) that has had a Pom has had to lock up their dogs when kids were around.

My elderly cousin has two Poms, the dogs from "hell". I spent a week with them when I rode to Florida with her. One was so nasty, she did her "business" in my shoe. I didn't know it until I put my foot in it!

I think they are adorable, but my friend that had one once said they are really needy and high maintenance dogs and recommended against it. My brother had one for a while and he was a pain in the hiney to house break and just a general nuisance so they finally gave him away.

They *can* be good with kids, but it's not the default. I've known a few and they can be very sweet but they do not typically have the patience for having their tails and hair pulled by kids. Also, IMHO, even the best pom is still an annoying little yapper.

My BIL has had a few over the years. The one he has now is good with kids, but still very hyper Even when she wants to be picked up, you can barely catch her. She is a mostly outdoor, farm dog. She even kills opossums!

Some of the others he's had have been sooooo yippy. This one isn't so bad, but maybe we don't notice because she's outside. none have been biters.

my neighbor has a Pom who is great with kids and my mil has 3. They are basically ok with my kids but we still watch them like a hawk JIC because they are can be a little nippy, mainly with their toys and food..

My sister has a Pom. I refer to it as the "hairy rat." I love all dogs, but this one is the biggest waste of fur I have ever dealt with. The ONLY good thing I can say about it is that he is pretty good with my son(4.)

No matter how much DSis has tried to housetrain that thing, it still hasn't gotten it...and it's seven! It gets into everything and then proceeds to get sick everywhere(yes, my Dsis has doggyproofed...it even eats the wall!) It barks constantly. I live next door and can hear it all day. Her friend brings his Pom over for doggy dates and his is just as annoying. The two of them together is almost unbearable!

I had 5 Poms. They were perfectly fine with our son; however, two of them did jump up on him because those two were hyper and they did bark alot. He played with them and threw them balls all the time and they would bring them back. The Poms were older when he was born and they took to him just fine. They all had very different personalities so I dont think you can generalize them all. One was the sweetest angel ever and not hyper at all and if I could duplicate him I would get another in a heartbeat. Another one was very shy and had a nervous habit where she would run in circles. Two of them were more hyper jumping on anyone wanting attention and the mother was fairly shy too. We loved our Poms but once they all passed away we have not replaced them because with two kids and activities we do not have the time to devote to a dog right now. Maybe someday we will get another one. They were black poms and the Mom & Dad was named Mickey & Minnie. Disney fan here can you tell.

If you want a small dog that's good with kids, you might look at a miniature schnauzer.

My son & daughter-in-law have a Pom and he's a yipper! Barks at everything! But he doesn't nip or bite. He's the cutest little thing. They don't have kids, but I think by the time they do, Duke (how's THAT for a name for a little dog!) will be older & mellower.

I have a Pom (my second, my first baby died three years ago). JoJo is THE BEST dog I have ever had and much better than most little dogs. She's pure black ball of fluff. We lived in the South FL area when we got her so we taught her all her commands in Spanish. She is excellent with kids, very tolerant, not barky at all unless she gets over excited, and then we take her out of the room until she behaves.

You just have to be consistant with these types of dogs. She flies on airplanes, goes to the dog park and is a therapy dog at a nursing home. She learned early on that good behavior is rewarded and reinforced. People tell me all the time they can't believe how awesome she is. They can be good with children but have to be exposed to all ages of children from puppyhood. She travels everywhere with us.

It really comes down to the training. Any nippy, yappy dog can change as long as the training and consistency is there, every single day. She's also an extremely lazy dog. She sleeps all day long, like a cat. And all I have to do is let her out into the backyard to do her business, she can be off leash without running away. She's a fabulous member of our family!

We had a Pom. She was precious and great with kids. I did call her the dumb blonde of the dog world though. She could not be trained come hell or high water. Until she died, she'd go out and them come in to do her business no matter how long we took her for a walk. We did have a place inside with paper.

My grandmother had one. I remember hating it, and it died when I was about 8, I think. It hated everyone except my bed-ridden grandmother. It did learn to use the litterbox on its own (it also ate the cat's food)... It thought my little sister was it's puppy and attacked my mom when she went to pick her up. I'm sure it was just this particular dog that was crazy, but no one in my family will get a pomeranian because of him.

I bought the most gorgeous dog that ever existed a few years ago...a red Pom. She had been a show dog and the owner was no longer interested in showing her for reasons unknown to me. All I knew was she was the *most gorgeous creature* I'd ever laid eyes on and I HAD to have her. After two weeks of agony I was willing to pay anyone to take her off my hands. Nasty tempered little thing!!! Oh, and she cried like a baby. Seriously, she "sounded" just like a human baby when she cried! I didn't work at the time and was giving the little dog lots of attention and tried sooo hard to love her. A total disaster.

Oh, and then there was "Puff". That was my MIL's Pom. He was a "nipper" and went for DH's leg each time he hugged his mom after a visit to her home. DH got tired of it and dropped a heavy set of keys on the dog's head. From then on, each time Puff approached DH, all he had to do was jingle his keys and the dog would run the other way. We're not fond of a Pom's personality but we really do find them beautiful.

I've owned three poms over the years and I think they do like a full time person around. They can be yappy and are definitely not a dog for small children. Kids tend to pull the hair and the dog will react by nipping back. I would say no kids younger than 8 or 9 with the poms. Also, any dog will act badly if the owner lets them.

DMIL has one. She thought they were beautiful, and just had to have one. The dog doesnt "Love" or is not a lap dog. I have a poodle and a mutt, and they "love to be loved", but not the pom. After about a week, mil was ready to get rid of her...She would be so stubborn and not eat, sometimes she wont eat for a day or 2. And shed...OMG she sheds like crazy. She likes to be by herself and not play too much...The dog is now 4 yrs old and is much better than she was, but it took alot of work. I asked mil if she would get another and she said 100% NO!! She would get something different

Wow...thanks everyone for the great replies. Seems to be more nay than yays! Maybe I should stick with Long hair Chihuahuas. But I do love the little Poms...guess I'll ponder a bit longer before dropping 400 bucks.
