I just feel bad for people that want a camera that will fit in there pocket and must settle. You can get a much much better camera in the $350 range but it will not fit in your pocket. Well not most pockets.

Everyone settles. You settled for a bigger camera, some will settle for less than perfect IQ.

But Yes there maybe better cameras in that price range, My only point was that noise(ISO) is not the only factor in finding the camera that is "better" for some SIZE maybe a very valid factor. Just because we dont find it important does not mean it is not a valid one. The word "better" is subjective, there is not debate there.

I also hate to see one person (who gives more help here than anyone else) get slammed for making a truth filled statement.

I think it is debateable.
A better camera will take a better picture. That is what cameras do. The quality of a camera is not judged by the size space into which it will fit. Size preferences belong in the convenience category.

Deb: enjoy the camera. Play with it. Get comfortable with it. Read the manual. I'm sure you'll capture some wonderful memories with it. Some of my favorite pictures are the ones I took of my (now deceased) Mom and Dad when I was 14 years old, using a $15 Kodak Instamatic.

You really summed up a lot of how I feel sometimes reading this board. I'm not a great photographer and I do want to get better but I have no desire to be a pro. I get dSLR envy because a lot of times here people make me feel like that is the only way to get 'acceptable' shots.

My first camera was a Kodak disc. I have shots I love from the camera. I have shots I love from my old Olympus 35mm. I have shots I love from my 1mp Sony, my 5mp Sony and my mom's Kodak digital. I have shots I'm terribly disappointed with from my S2IS. I have NO "acceptable' shots from my son's pre-school graduation while photos from my friends Sony's are better. Yet the S2IS is considered the 'better' camera.

Most people don't ever move off of auto. They don't want to! They are happy with their photos. Why isn't that ok?

I've learned a lot here but I also get discouraged a lot. I also don't see the need for snarky and sarcastic remarks when 'average' people ask innocent questions. We are here to help people and talk about a hobby we all enjoy, not make people feel like crap because of what camera they own.

Not everyone can afford a dSLR. I thought I was going to but something happened in my life that cut my monthly income by the price of a 30d. So now I have to make due (do?) with what I have.

I don't know, I've already probably said too much and it seems like most people here disagree with me so I'll shut up.

Don't you think you are overreacting slightly. No one said that you don't give good advice or aren't knowledgeable about photography. I think we all agree that you are a wonderful photographer. I just feel that sometimes things can be handled more delicately.

If facts needs to be sugar coated just to make people feel happy about their purchase, I have no business being here. I'm here to help, to show fact as is, without sugar coating, without frills.

Regardless, I personaly feel that some of you guys are the ones who are overreacting. All I did was putting the my personal test result, Popular photography test result and DPreview photo result. It's up to the OP or anybody else to see whether the result suit their needs or otherwise. However, some of you interpret the objective data subjectively. (such as "ISO noise doesn't bother me"; I don't care whether it bothers you or not, even if it does not bother me or even if I LOVE the ISO noise, the fact remains the ISO noise is extremely high)

What else can I give?

Okay then. The TC-1, Kodak, Polaroid, especially if they are given to you or if you already bought them, they turn into the greatest cameras in the world. How's that?

Quite honestly I'm very tired of people trying to justify anything (not just camera) even after the objective, measurable facts have been laid out. It's like when the fact (objective) that the world is not flat have been laid out but some people are adamant that the world is flat just because they feel that it's the right point of view (subjective).

As posted somewhere else, I've also made the mistake of buying a $14,000 Kodak dSLR with Canon mount... and you know what? I learn from that mistake, cut my losses and get a new camera. Heck, it was my fault to not research about ISO problem and exposure problem with that camera. When other professionals criticize my camera what did I do? Sulk? discouraged? Heck no! From that experience, I learn that I need to know what I want, know what I need, and only budget after finding all the facts. Something that I now teach to my students.

Either way, I've rambled enough.

I don't do sugarcoating. I give fact, pure objective facts. Apparently some of you don't like it, therefore I won't post camera reviews anymore, even when the question is being asked. After all, I can't do anything right. I say something subjective or objective. either way I'm wrong.

Before you drive off in your two-door, convertible huff...what DO you expect Deb to do with the information you offered? Do you think it was at all helpful? Constructive?

Under the circumstances, how would YOU feel if you were in her shoes and had gotten the answer that you gave to her?

We all know you have a lot to offer. We've seen your pictures. We've been amazed at your insight, absorbed all your tips and advice. Everyone who visits these boards has learned from you. As a photographer, you're peerless. You have an amazing eye.

But sometimes in photogaphy, as in life, a more valuable tool is a generous and sympathetic heart.

I hope this can all just calm down. I do not post all that often, but a read almost all of the threads. I enjoy everyone's posts. I especially enjoy Kelly's posts. Most of the time I agree with Kelly, but not always. I am also a Canon fan, but if another brand makes a better camera, then I will be all aboard. I believe that Kelly is in that same boat. Unless you are a stockholder, why have brand loyalty just because of a company's history? I just look for quality for my needs.


Back to the original subject, how well does noise reduction software work on this camera. Noise Ninja makes my S1 IS images taken at ISO 400 acceptable for me when out of camera images are not.

Deb, you will enjoy the camera. Like all cameras it will do many things well and some things not. You will learn what they are. And you will get nice pictures.

May I recommend one thing. If you can find it, think about getting a Gorillapod

Or any type of small tripod. It will help. I even have a nifty unipod that can be used as a mini tripod.

All very small and light to carry around.

Right now I have been shooting on the natural setting and like it, but try the other two settings.

Actually, that wasn't the original subject. Kelly made it the subject. The OP, having received one as a gift, asked for other owners' likes and dislikes.

Kelly, your response was scathing. Not only did you criticise the subject camera, but the OP's previous camera. That's simply unnecessary. You ignored the OP's request for help in making the most of her gift and just jumped in with an attack. Kelly, I don't expect sugar-coating, but a less 'holier-than-thou' attitude wouldn't go amiss. This thread was hijacked - it should never have turned into a lesson on 'noise': it should have been about DISers helping a fellow DISer to enjoy her new camera.

I have only been posting on the Photograpy Board for a few weeks, but one only needs to be here a matter of hours to get the message that this is the Kelly Grannell forum. We now have posts which include your name in the thread title. You have posted a series of tutorials to which you constantly refer other posters. We even have a proprietary lens renamed 'The Kelly'! Frankly, it's empire building. That I find unacceptable (to coin a phrase). I suspect this board will be equally divided between devotees and detractors, but that only serves to prove my point. No board on these forums should revolve around one person.

This camera seems to be a great solution for lots of people, but it does seem to have noise issues , so the question is what can you do about it? Well, the OIS means that you can shoot at lower shutter speeds than would otherwise be possible, allowing you to keep the ISO setting as low as possible (100 or less). The result is that noise won't be too much of a problem.

What happens if setting a high ISO can't be avoided, or you are not happy about the noise in any particular shot? Well, there are a few things you can do about it in post-processing:

Use noise reduction software - there are lots of good programs, including Neat Image and Noise Ninja. Try Noiseware Community Edition if you want to try a free version. These are generally simple to use and most can also be added as a plug-in to Photoshop - this basically means it shows up in the filter menu and is as simple to use as, for example, unsharp mask.

If you want to do any colour manipulation in Photoshop, such as increasing the saturation, digital artifacts are likely to appear and make the image look noisier than ever. By following this simple tutorial you can easily solve the problem.
