I am thinking about making the cookie recipes in mason jars (just add butter/liquid type things) to give as gifts come Christmas season. Also would like to make up some extras in case I need an extra something, hostess gift type things, teachers gifts, etc. - whenever I need something small. Does anyone have a great recipe they could post for this type of gift to make up?

I am one of those people who is "cooking-impaired" I did see books at AC Moore (when I was there for scrapbooking stuff!) called "Gifts in a Jar". They had all different recipes, and one book was for cookies, one for beverages (hot chocolate, spice tea, etc.). They told you what to put in the jars, how to layer them, and all the other good stuff.

That sounds like a neat gift! Good luck! :goodvibes

I have made these for years and people love them! I usually put one jar with a cookie recipe and one jar with a hot chocolate/cappuchino, etc recipe in a gift bag and then do some decorating of the bag...they are sooooooo cute and so inexpensive, especially if you buy the staple items like flour and sugar in bulk.

Another place to go is to Gooseberry Patch. They have a wonderful collection of cookbooks and little cookbooks just on that topic alone. I think that is a wonderful idea for Christmas or anytime gift.

Anybody interested in participating in a swap for the recipes for these jars? We could each pick one of the recipes, make the little cards that go with it, type a list of the basic ingredients that go in the jar and then do a swap. Perhaps we can even include the embellishments that we usually add to our jars such as ribbon, fabric, or paper for the tops.
If we have a group of about 8 folks we could each make 8 kits consisting of tags, list of ingredients, and embellishments we would each get a set of 8 different recipes in return.
Please let me know if you are interested. I would be happy to host this. The deadline would be mid-December so that we could make them as gifts.

The Hershey website has recipes and some are for the gifts in a jar made with Hershey baking bits or cocoa or whatever. I really like the Dark Chocolate Chips so if you haven't tried those, try them!

INGREDIENTS:
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups white sugar

1 cup butter, softened
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon lemon extract

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DIRECTIONS:
In a medium bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt; set aside. In a 1 quart large mouth jar, layer the sugar on the bottom and the flour mixture on top. Attach a tag with the following instructions:
Empty the contents of the jar into a large bowl. Cut in 1 cup of softened butter until the mixture is crumbly. In a separate bowl, beat 2 eggs, 1 teaspoon vanilla and 1/2 teaspoon of lemon extract until light and fluffy. Pour into the dry ingredients and mix until well blended. Cover bowl and chill for 1 hour.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough out to 1/4 inch in thickness. Cut into desired shapes with cookie cutters. Place cookies 1 1/2 inches apart onto cookie sheets.
Bake for 10 to 12 minutes in the preheated oven, until edges begin to brown. You can decorate them with sugar before baking of frost after baking.
