Anyone have a colonoscopy prep fail?

Yes, it happened to my Mom...TWICE! She did the prep, they couldn't finish the procedure so sent her home and had her do it over. She did. The second time they couldn't finish either and wanted her to do the prep a THIRD time. She refused. She was 76 at the time. I think it would be hard to do it a second time, but a third would be even worse.

OMG....this is bad enough but a third time. At that age I don't blame your mom.

Meant to comment on your thread but sending good thoughts for your mom and your family. I am sure it's very difficult and lots of things to come to terms with. I lost my mom 1.5 years ago after 9 years of illness. I am still coming to terms with things. My dad just turned 80 and I get scared of the future for him. I don't want him to suffer and selfishly don't want to lose him. Not there yet but thoughts go through my mind. I am an only child as are both my parents.

Sorry to hijack my own thread. Lol

This prep was Prepopik. There are 2 packets of powder - one dose at 5:00 and 2nd at 11:00. The first dose, mix packet with 5oz of water. Mix 2-3 minutes. Follow with 5 - 8oz clear liquid of choice over the next 5 hours. 2nd dose do the same with the powder and follow with 3 - 8 oz of clear water over the next hour and done.

Yes, all IV'd, sedated and in procedure room. Wake up to find it couldn't be done.

I've used Colyte in the past as wee as movi- prep. Can't recall what DH used in the past but it worked.

Thanks everyone. Glad I am done but feel badly for him.

My dh just did his colonoscopy and the prep is, 4 Dulcolax starting at noonish. Two hours after that you begin a Miralax prep, 8oz of gatorade with 1 oz of Miralax and do that 8 times, suppose to try and drink it every 15mins.

I have had 2 colonoscopies and going for my third soon.

Yeah, at her age I certainly didn't blame her for refusing to go through it all a third time.

Thanks for the good thoughts for my mom, I appreciate it. Yes, lots to come to terms with, it's hard but I keep reminding myself it's part of life and everyone goes through it. Sorry about your mom, too, and now you have your dad to worry about. I know it's so hard. I'm an only as well, and really wish I had a sibling right now to help with all the stuff for the nursing home, etc. Like today I went to the funeral home to upgrade her pre-paid funeral she and dad did about 10 years ago. Her money needs to be spent on stuff for her, so I upgraded the casket. Gosh, that was hard to sit there looking at photos of caskets and planning for her funeral. But I knew the more I could get done now, the better it would be in the long run. Even paid for the flowers already. I do want to ask her what colors she wants though, as I really have no idea. And cleaning out her apartment pretty much on my own as DH is a farmer and this is harvest time, he's working long hours so can't help right now. So hard. :(

Yes, it's like water that comes out before they can do the test as they have to be able to see!

I've seen a lot of different ways to do the cleanout, but one should always be clear before it starts.

Sorry it happened OP. What a pain!

I had to take my mom to one a few years before she died, she kept calling me the night before "jay, i cant stop pooping this cant be right', anyway the next day i took her, and the Doctor came out to me, I thought that was real fast, he said she was to stopped up. Later my mom told me after she called me she started taking anti Diarrhea medicine, I was so mad, I took a day off work to take her

I drove my mom to her colonoscopy last week. The nurse handed me her paperwork and told me to bring the car to the front of the building and wait for her to be brought out. That gave me lots of time to read through the paperwork and look at the pictures! The doctors notes said the patient's prep was "poor" and that solid matter was found throughout the colon. Apparently they were still able to complete the procedure, so it must not have been that much.

Who was supposed to do the drive home?

No worries, we had a driver to drop us off and pick us up! Usually, we are the driver for each other but we were both due and trying to get it in
before insurance changes again, so we attempted to do this at the same time.

OMG. Too funny. Not at the time and in all seriousness, she could have really thrown her system into a tailspin on top of not having the procedure. Reminds me of when my mom was in the ER and they
needed a urine sample. She was so sick that she couldn't get out of bed, therefore, the bedpan. Well, she decided to poop and when the nurse came in mom just looked at her and said "I had to go". But,
it then ended with a catheter for mom.

I have been told that they can navigate with a "poor" prep as long as it's fairly liquid, despite being some solid matter. However, they do need to document "poor" and also, it then gives them some room if
something has been missed. Don't know if that is true or not. Yesterday, DH was told that if he was more liquid (which, I am thinking the doctor thought), they could have done the procedure. Nobody likes
this to be done but when you need to prep again like this.....

I used this about 2 months ago. It was the most pleasant prep (figuratively speaking!!!) I've used yet. But...it didn't work nearly as quickly as the other methods I've used. And, it was expensive to boot!! Close to $60 co-pay!! If did finally work, but it wasn't as quick as others....I actually wasn't completely sure I was fully cleaned out. But, it all went fine.

This is the prep that has worked the best for me. It worked more quickly and more 'forcefully' if you will. But, I have a very low fluid tolerance...so it's very hard for me to drink that much. I was able to get away with drinking less fluid.

My mom always told me that there could be 10 kids and sometimes it still falls on one person. I have my DH and DS22 but I still feel as though it is 100% on my shoulders...they help, but all the decisions and whatnot is on me. My mom was 77 when she passed and everyone always said my parents were young and I still had years to deal with things as I am 20 year younger than my parents...my friends had older parents. My mom was diagnosed at age 69 and dad became her primary caregiver. It will be my turn to take care of dad and be his advocate. He is currently in fairly good health, but at who knows. Dad was in the hospital with MRSA last year and delusional on morphine....I was his health advocate, along with being his daughter. He wanted someone with him 24/7. We took shifts during the day but I stayed overnight with him in the hospital for 3 weeks. I wouldn't have it any other way but it was very difficult. All of this and I work, as does my DH. DS was a college student and working p/t. We made it work. Anyway, my point is that I understand how tough it is both physically and mentally. I can't imagine having to deal with the funeral home things....

YES!!! The volume of the actual stuff is so much better than some of the other things out there and not horrible (although, not good) tasting. It did work on me but I've had other preps that I felt worked better.
Also, the other preps I have had, I was finished with and able to get a decent nights sleep. With taking the 2nd dose at 11:00, we were up all night. I believe that was the key with my DH....it didn't work as quick as it should have and we had a 6:30 AM arrival time. He didn't start "going" until about 1:30 AM and he started the prep at 5:00. I've asked about the Dulcolax prep and none of the doctors I have had have been enthused by it. I have been told that I could try it but I have been a bit nervous if I tried it and then wasn't cleaned out enough.

Could be worse.
I've had one colonoscopy, I took all the prep, similar as OP.
All 'went' well ... I was good to go!!

Except
I showed up a day early for the test and my Dr isn't in the hospital that day.
I was devastated lol...

It was about 4 months before I could contemplate taking another run at it so to speak!
