Anyone have a colonoscopy prep fail?

And they couldn't have another doctor do it??????? That HAS to be the worst.

When I was a nursing assistant on the med/surg floor there was a patient (not mine) who needed a colonoscopy. She had to do all the prep in the hospital...not even in the comforts of her own bathroom. The next morning the doctor called in because his dog had swallowed something and needed to be taken to the vet. The woman was very firm in saying she needed a new doctor and would not be doing the prep again.
Nope. Had to be my surgeon. I asked trust me if there was ANYONE else!!!

I did a liquid diet for three days BEFORE prep day. Your hubby may have to do the same.

OMG. I thought the one day was bad enough. Ugh.

Could be worse.
I've had one colonoscopy, I took all the prep, similar as OP.
All 'went' well ... I was good to go!!

Except
I showed up a day early for the test and my Dr isn't in the hospital that day.
I was devastated lol...

It was about 4 months before I could contemplate taking another run at it so to speak!

Oh my. I don't even know what to say. Once every 5 years is too soon for me and to make that mistake had to have you so upset.

Tomorrow is my BIG day. Age 50 screening. I was planning it do it the year I turned 50 as the year was drawing to an end, I had not done it. A classmate came into my work, age 49, stage 3 colon cancer, he had totally clean lab work earlier that year. He said do it. I said I would in his name. My prep the two stool softeners and 8.3 oz mirlax in Gatorade. Clear liquid diet for today.

Good Luck, it is worth it.

This was a new doctor as our prior doctor retired. It was a different prep, one that this doctor thinks is wonderful. I asked him about the prep I had used the last 2 times and he said he preferred this one. Neither of us ate differently in the days leading to the prep and no "last meal". We were not told to eat lighter, nor have we any other time. However, it makes sense. The doc will prescribe something different for the next one. Ugh. The next thing will see how insurance handles the aborted procedure.
I have done this for 20 years with 2 different prep meds
You ALWAYS fast for 2-days prior - this means no solids- broth jello etc
That is the problem

2 days? I'd never make it. I barely lasted through the one day of clear liquids. I've done bowel prep 3 or 4 times in the last 20 years or so. I never had to fast for 2 days.

Just had mine today. Everything OK.

I've had both cleansing procedures. The split procedure was much better. It's becoming the standard procedure now. Doctor says it does a better job. It isn't the best tasting but much better than the old. My procedure was at 9:30. At 5:00 the day before I drank the first one and at 4:30 the next morning the second. You drink each sessions in four equal amounts 15 minutes apart.

Tell you one thing, it isn't the most fun thing to do but it can sure is save lives.

The problem with colon cancer it sneaks up on you without signs many times too late. I found that out 23 years ago. I was lucky, I beat stage 3 cancer.

Many people fear having it done. In this case fear can/will kill you.

We just recently both had our first colonoscopies. My doctor gave us the choice of a 2-day prep or the standard 1-day prep. My DH went with the 1-day, but I opted for the 2-day since I was too afraid of failing.

My last meal was lunch on Saturday and didn't eat again until Monday afternoon, plus the 2 days of taking Miralax and that awful Magnesium Citrate (I involuntarily shudder every time I think of that stuff!)

As bad as it was, it worked so I would do the 2-day prep again in a heartbeat rather than risk a fail.

I will take this opportunity to add that the fear and hysteria over this procedure is way, way, way overrated. The prep may be the worst part but it isn't that bad.(OK having it fail would be most unfortunate, repeating it would suck.) I had my second one done last month, the worst part is being hungry.

I was all clear, told to repeat in ten years. Prep was not bad, I had no cramping. The day of prep I could of worked, it was my normal day off. But for sure I would of wanted to be at home after I drank the second prep,I then quickly needed the bathroom every 40 minutes. I had no cramping or discomfort just needed to go.

But I did have a bad reaction to the sedatives it was not pretty they kept me there an extra 3 hours. And after I got home I was still throwing up until 8pm. I did work the next day, anyone close by could hear my gut gurgling, I ate toast for all my meals that day.
