I am looking to get a Berner puppy. I live in New York. Does anyone know a responsible breeder that I could contact?? I have had dogs all my life but this would be my first Berner. I am not interested in any other breed. I am just looking for several breeder suggestions so I can start looking into them and deciding what breeder fits best with our family. Thanks :flower3::dogdance:

Awwww! I don't have one now but I did growing up. He was a sweet big thing. And so handsome. He was great with kids but honestly not the bravest watch dog! Lol. There was also a joke in our family about the dog necause he never liked to climb stairs... We would go up to bed, and he'd be at the bottom of the stairs, looking up, pacing...until he got the nerve up to climb the stairs. My uncle would say, Pfft-thats some MOUNTAIN dog! We got our dog...wow..I guess about 20 years ago at a breeder in Northwestern NJ. I don't remember the name.

Sorry that doesn't answer your question at all but I just wanted to wish you the best with your future new puppy! ;)

Can't help you with a breeder, but I just wanted to say I have a soft place in my heart for Bernies.:goodvibes Back when my son, Christian, was little was in several kinds of PT, OT, and speech therapy. He was non-walking, nonverbal and extremely sensory defensive. Christian did not interact with or even smile at anyone. Once a month, the office would bring in the therapy pets, one of which was a big ol' Bernese Mountain Dog named Ranger. Ranger took a shine to Christian and always tried to place himself near to, but not touching Christian. Gradually, Christian began to scoot a little closer until one day he schooched right up to Ranger. Ranger responded by lying on his side and Christian stretched out beside him, along the length of Ranger's stomach. Ranger very protectively put his giant paw over Christian's chest and Christian fell asleep. :lovestruc It was the most precious thing I ever saw. After that, Christian began to open up to people. He began to seek out Ranger, to pet him and stroke his back. Christian never did get comfortable enough to look Ranger in the face(too much information!) but they had a wonderful bond. When I see a Bernese Mountain Dog I am immediately taken back to those very hard days when all seemed bleak and remember how the love of a dog touched our lives.

I know a breeder here in Central Virginia. They are very sweet dogs and she has a couple that she uses as therapy dogs in nursing homes here. What is bad is that they can have health problems and like many large breeds usually live less than 10 years.

Funny, I just asked our breeders (Komondor) about who theywould recommend as DS's girlfriend wants one. My breeders are both AKC judges and have sat on many AKC panels. They have bred dogs for over 35 years and are extremely well respected and well connected in the dog world. I wouldn't buy a dog without her recommendation as she has seen it all.

She said the best breeder to get a Berner from was in Arizona. Said she has a very clean line health wise, great temperaments and of course beautiful dogs.

Be careful with the breeder you go with. Berners can have some very serious health problems and many lines do not live more than 6 year, with cancer being the main problem. The top breeders have been working diligently to clean up the health problems and have a done a great job. But this is one breed you absolutely, completely do not want to go with a back yard or hobby breeder.

I will look up this breeder's name and get it to you.

Thank you so much!!. I love people on the Dis, always so generous. I have been researching Berners for a while now and I'm ready to add one to my family. I know how important it is to buy from a reputable breeder. I figured I might get some good leads from fellow dis'ers. I'd really appreciate any help. Thanks again.

AHHHH Thanks for sharing. I really think that a Berner is just what my boys need.

Thank you I've been looking at the AKC and Berner org sites.

Have you checked out the regional clubs at www.bmdca.org ? That would be the first step I would take because you can go to their meetings and get to know other Berner owners in your area. My parents are breeders, but live in Illinois. I love this breed, and am partial to the males as they seem to be the "lovers" of the breed in my experience. Good luck in your search.
