Mine are the same way when I get home. The dogs were home alone a bit longer than usual yesterday because DH worked late. I normally run home before class when DH works late to pee them, but he didn't know he was going to be stuck at work.

It was like they were freed from some Devil's Island when he got home the way they carried on and the look they gave me when I got home was horrible, like I let them down. Of course that was probably due to the not sharing the sandwich.

That's another thing about beagles. They communicate very well without sound. They just really like the sound of their voice. Roswell doesn't bay, but she does trill and make other noises, plus she gives looks, plus she taps up when she wants to "tell" you something. It's very "Timmy is in the well" of her.

Oh she is very cute.
She looks to be mixed with sheperd based on the eyebrows, so she might be a bit bigger than an average beagle.

She's adorable! She doesn't look full beagle to me, though. Maybe it's just because her ears are back, but her face is a little long for a beagle. Beagle mixes are great, too.

Did you check out BREW? Where are you in NJ? There's also a beagle rescue based in Ventnor called Penny Angel's Beagle Rescue. I have no idea how easy Petfinders is, but BREW was pretty easy. They do check you out thoroughly, though (as they should, IMO).

I'm in Central NJ (middlesex county), but I wouldn't mind driving anywhere around the state for the right dog.

I have three "Beagle-somethings"... three lovely ladies who have all been adopted. Holly is the lightest colored girl, and I found her on Petfinder.com. She was at an animal control shelter; a stray found eating out of a garbage can. She is the sweetest, most loving girl you could ever imagine. They are all smart, and were easy to potty-train. My Lucy (spotted) will live to be 25, because she nevers gets off of the couch, and has the metabolism of a turtle.

I lost my Beagle-something just before Christmas (she had also been abandoned and was a year old when I got her). She had to be put down due to liver failure. When I just now saw this thread, I had to add what wonderful dogs they are. We miss her so much. She wasn't purebred (might have had some cocker), but she was wonderful nonetheless.

Our two are Beagle-somethings as well. We think that they are Beagle Bassett mixed - that is why we call them Bagles.

Bailey is more Bassett. Parker is more Beagle. But they are both super dogs!

Toby is crate trained because he's a trouble maker when left on his own for too long. When we first got him, we kept him gated in our kitchen (which was a VERY SMALL galley kitchen). He earned his nickname "Tobini" because after leaving him alone for an hour or so, he'd usually wind up figuring out how to get out of the kitchen.

Once he ate a 5 pound bag of potatoes from the kitchen cabinet -- kiddie locks are our new best friend.

In that same instance, he ate a bunch of sponges. Frankly, it was a miracle he was able to poop after all that! But he didn't have any ill affects, no matter how often I called the vet in those first few hours.

"Tobini"!!! I love that!!! Our Beags has the nick-name "Hou-doggi" for the very same reason. He can get out of his crate in about two minutes flat! After too many escapes to count (he tips it upside down, somehow gets under the plastic tray and then escapes thru the larger holes in the bottom of it), we started trying everything to keep him inside it. We even wedged it between the dresser and the wall...he just scooted it forward until it was far enough out to tip over. We finally zip-tied his crate to our Labrador's crate...no way he can tip it over attached to that HUGE crate (which we call "the condo")!

Beags favorite illeage snack is leather. If I tell you all he's eaten, you'll call the ASPCA on me. Suffice to say he has no preference between leather coats, leather belts, leather shoes, or cowboy boots...he likes them all! But it's been a while since he's had the chance to partake of his favorite snacks (see, told you he can't tip his crate over any more!!).

I found some adorable puppies on the BREW site and was checking out the application. I think I have to get something at least 6 months since I would have to leave it at home during the day. Ideally I'd want something 8-12 months, a female, and tri-color.

You might have an easier time finding a male from rescue. I am looking to possibly add another female dog to my family and there's a lot more males than females.
I have one of each and in my experience the male is easier going and more loving. Females are more aloof.
Most beagles are tri-colored so that would be easy

I thought I read that the males are more high maintenance (ie dig more, bark a lot, run away more?) Or is it more of a dog by dog basis. I wanted a male until I read that, but is it not based on sex?

Definitely on a dog by dog basis, and the great thing about rescue over a shelter is that they'll match the dog for you so you know a lot more about what the dog is like.

In my case, both of my dogs bark equally, but only the male bays (the Aroooooo). My male is the one I can let run around my yard off-leash. My female is a lot smarter and more devious.

HEY! get your proverbial paws off, as that was the one I was eyeing (until I saw it has to be 6 months to be left at home more than 4 hours).

If I want to run with my dog down the park, would I be a fool as it would try to dart and drag me with it? (I would keep it on a leash while I ran with it). We couldn't do that with our Scottie since she just stopped and smelled or pee'd every 3 minutes.

The FIRST thing I will do the next time I get a beagle is get it some good obedience training, heavy on the "heel" command. My dog will literally hang herself before she slows down for me. I have tried to jog with her and it's like she's thinking "alright here we go..." and takes the heck off, dragging me with her.

Not to say they can't be trained to heel...I'm sure they can. But that nose has a mind of its own. It would take some training....but your doggie should get some obedience training anyway; it's always a good thing.
