Hi everyone,

This is my 1st time posting on the disABILITIES! board. We live in Arizona and are planning a trip to DL next May. I know that this board is mostly for WDW folks, but I'm hoping that y'all can point me in the right direction. We have good friends who live about an hour's drive from Disneyland. The 1 friend has celiac disease and I know how to handle food allergies, so that part I'm not concerned about. The other friend (they're husband & wife, so this is the husband I'm talking about now) is legally blind...as in, he can't see a thing. In addition, years ago, he was in a bad car accident and can walk just fine...even long distances, he can walk without any problems. But it's the standing for any more than 5 minutes or so that is really painful for him.

Should he get a DAS card or a wheelchair or an ECV? He said that he feels like he doesn't really need a wheelchair or an ECV because he can walk just fine. It's the standing for long periods of time that he can't handle.

Also, has anyone travelled to Disney parks with a member of their travel group who is blind? If so, what suggestions would you have for other members of the blind community who are going to a Disney park?

Our friends might be joining us for 1 of the 3 days that we'll be at Disneyland and I'd like them to have an enjoyable time. Thanks in advance for all of your help!

1 if he need it a wheel chair

2 yes I understand but a DAS card will not prevent standing for more then 5 minutes ( even with the DAS card you will be standing in the FP line for at lest 10 minutes maybe longer. then you have standing in line for food standing in line for transportation ( I am not sure about Disney land but I know for Disney world)
3 disney will not ( or they have posted this on line that they do not ) give DAS cards out to people that have problems standing
4 no but I have spent a good number of my college years helping people that are blind get around campus
5 have someone in your party push the wheel chair and let the blind person use an arm ( even if it is the one pushing the wheel chair ) to guide them if the son is bind they should have a cain they use or a service dog have them still use this so that 1 people know they have a vision problem and they should give them more room and 2 if you do not see something infant of then the cain or dog will.

a side not your friend may not need any mobility device or any other assistance if you give then a little room in line to walk in place and if the lines that you are in are slow moving this could be your best option and make your friend feel better but if you do use a wheel chair your friend could use it to sit in for line or when ever there is a longtime of standing in one spot.

I know it Disney world they have a listing device for people with vision problems I do not know if Disney land has this ( I am guessing they do ) but it will tell the user what is going on visual in the rides and some show, you have to stop at GR ( in Disney world so I guess it is the same at Disney land ) to get one and there is a deposit for this device.

have a great trip

My friend Joy is at DL now. She does not take her dog due to crowds and she wants to ride the rides with her family. You can see her page and ask her questions here: https://m.facebook.com/profile.php?id=651792834911143&tsid=0.48472242935826515&source=typeahead

Unless someone needs a wheelchair due to mobility issues, I would not! And if he's visually impaired, avoid an ECV as he could injure someone. He will know what his needs are more than anyone else. If he needs DAS, he can request at guest services.

Unless a ride breaks down and they don't clear there queue, I don't think you'll be standing still for 5 minutes. There are some shows where that may be the case, but there is usually room to move around. If someone needs to be keep moving, consider having them wait in line between 2 members of you your party so you can leave an extra gap for them to move around. Wheelchairs and rollators aren't just for people who have issued walking, they're for people who need a portable seat. If he uses an ID cane, a wheelchair would probably be a better idea then a rollator.
