Anyone going Geocaching this weekend? **NEW CACHERS...POP IN!**

I would love to go. It is less than 300 miles from us so maybe, just maybe I can talk the crew into going. Are you going? I will be going to the local MEGAevent in March. GC1DRV3

Your Mega event looks like fun!  :magnify:

No, no plans "yet" for Geo Woodstock. We'll see what last minute plans are. LOL! That seems to be how I do things...Disney trips when we lived in FL, we just had an overnight caching trip to Arlington and DC last week. :teeth: Tennessee...hmmmmmmmmmmmm. :teeth:

Found my first cache yesterday..it was a 1/1, very out in the open. Took me about 5 min to find. The clue inside (it was a 2-parter) was washed off from the recent rain and whatnot. HOWEVER...I remember on the info page that it said something about the library so I went in and asked about it. The librarian pointed me to where the second part was and I signed the log.

Emboldened by my small success, I looked up some more near that one and found there was one near DS's school. So this morning after I dropped him off, I decided to go find it. I had used Google Maps to locate it, since I don't own a GPS. Google Maps pointed me in the right direction BUT..the directions it gave were to go through somebody's back yard. Oops.:upsidedow I drove around for a minute or two and figured out a way to get to it without having to go through the person's back yard (I'm sure they would not have appreciated that). Took me about ten minutes to get to it, but once I got to it it was easy to find. It was NOT a micro the way the info sheet had said, but a camo'd Folger's can. I realized I'd forgotten to bring something with me to put inside so I did a little drawing on a sheet from the notebook I'd brought with me, signed it with my geocacher name and put that inside. I saw a Travelbug, but I was hesitant to grab it. I ended up grabbing a small plastic ring (like you find on cupcakes) with a football on it.

There seem to be a TON in/around here, enough to keep me busy for awhile and they all seem to be 1s and 2s so I don't know if I'll need a GPS or not. If I ever decide to branch out into the harder ones I might. But for now I think I'll stick to my Google Map. :)

Congrats on your FIRST find! :cheer2: Now you need to get a GPS...makes it so much easier.:thumbsup2 What area are you in? We have a 2 part library cache here, sounds like it is along the same line as the one you did. Welcome to the fun, and keep us posted here! We hit 720 something recently and I still love caching! Make sure you look for events in your area too...those are tons of fun!:grouphug:

North Texas, about an hour out of Dallas.

I want a GPS unit to..a Garmin Etrex or something, but it's going to have to wait until either my birthday (Sept) or Christmas sadly enough. I'm going to have to do the best I can with either DH's (when I can steal it from him:rotfl: ) or Google Maps.

Welcome to Geocaching!
A GPSr will definitely add to the fun. Maps may work well for easy cache hides in parking lots and other wide open areas but not very well for the tougher caches and micros. I would suggest trying Ebay or a local geocaching group for a used GPSr if cash is the issue (I can certainly understand that). On Ebay, you just have to find one in between all of the car type GPSrs. I did a quick check and there is a Magellan Explorist 300 that is currently at less than $40. You can probably find better deals than that one, too.
Good luck and have fun!

Congrats on your first find! And without a GPS! I would never attempt it without a GPS. ;) You're better at it than I am!

I did a multi in Northern VA for #1,000. It started at a mall. You had to walk through using info on the cache pages and collect numbers from outside the stores, signs, etc. to get the coordinates. Then the cache was located inside an area library. One of the best caches I've done!

Have you checked the forums on geocaching.com? I think there's an area there with GPSs for sale.

Have fun! :magnify: Let us know what else you find.

Anyone do this with there kids? I have a coworker whos son would love this. There on a fixed income but If I bought a GPS I could share with them. There so nice to me, I would love to share this with um.

Theres alot of them around here. How do you pick one?

DH and I actually came upon a geocache by accident once, wandering around Mackinac Island on our Anniversary.

SO how does one get started? I mean how do you pick a good one, theres 400 in my city within 4 miles of my humble home?

Flying....it isn't hard to get started at all. You must have been to the site to know there are so many near you. Now all you need is a GPS, pick a cache or two to do, plug in the coordinates and head on out. You don't have to pay anything to get started at all. I would suggest that you pick some easy caches to get started with. If you want to send me a private message with your zip code I can look for a few of the easier ones that might be good for you. We have been caching for over 2 years and the kids love it...most of the time. I tend to burn them out at times. When you head out to do your caches take a few small trinkets or little toys to trade out items.

Have fun!:cheer2:

Sandy---:cheer2: :cool1: :worship:  :cloud9: :woohoo: :yay: WTG on 1000 finds!!! We are now at 728, so maybe another year we can get there. Sounds like you picked a nice cache to make the special one! Again congrats to you!!!

North Texas...anywhere around Whitewright or Tom Bean? :teeth: Denton? My mom was born in Tom Bean, and we have relatives in the other two cities. Every now and then I check for caches in those areas. Not that I'm planning a trip there. Just a virtual one. :teeth:

 I started geocaching for two reasons...one, it was something pretty inexpensive to do with my son! Gas, a GPS, and that was pretty much it. Two, it helped me learn my way around our area. We started not long after moving here. I bet your friend and her son would have a great time. My son still comes with me although he's now a teen and would rather skip it.

ZephyrHawk...Too funny! How did you come across it? Were you bitten by the bug to start caching? :)

flying_babyb...I would choose any of the larger sized caches near you. Large or medium would be good in the beginning. Some of the micros can be frustrating even for long-time cachers. Personally, I would like to see micros outlawed. :lmao: lilallybean has it right...bring items to trade. That's a good part of the fun, too.

lilallybean...Thanks! :teeth: Congrats on 728! I'm sure hitting 1,000 is a good reality for you now. I know when I was around 700, I started thinking that 1,000 was actually attainable! :lmao: Before that it was just a number.

One of the members of the geocaching.com forums offered to send me their old Garmin Geko 201 and it came in the mail today. As soon as the batteries are charged up, I'm going to load them in and probably go out MOnday after I drop DS off at school.

Pinwizard--we're actually about 20 min out of Denton, between Denton and Frisco. :) Small world, eh?

Flying--I would pick a cache that's a 1 or 2 in difficulty and no more than a 2 in terrain. They're the easiest ones to 'practice' on when you're starting out as I've learned.:thumbsup2

Congratulations on the new GPS, sdarwkcabemanmy!   You are in for a lot of fun! :teeth: Let us know how your first caching adventure goes. :thumbsup2 Don't forget a stick to poke around with.

You're 20 minutes from Denton? LOL! Small world for sure. My mom's cousin and her family live there. I think Marie has been working for the phone company since she was in high school!

I FINALLY got the closest to home unfound cache off the top of my list! :lmao:    It has been at the top of the list for a couple years...at least. A couple people finally got me through the woods. LOL! Holy cow. Had to take the round-a-bout way to stay on trails. It would have been easier to go to the airport and jump the fences, but that probably would result in the police talking to us. ;) Glad to get it off the list! Ended up being a nice walk and a good cache. Beautiful view of the reservoir, too. :)

I looked up some local caches and picked one that was about a 2/2 or so three miles or so from my house. I decided that since the day was nice and it wasn't THAT far, I'd just walk. I walked through several neighborhoods and got odd looks from fellow joggers/walkers when I pulled out my little Geko to check my heading.

I finally got to where the cache was supposed to be, poked around for fifteen minutes or so and couldn't find it. Oh well..maybe next time right?

I had already dropped a waypoint at my house, so I could find my way back because I get lost rather easily. It had taken me close to an hour to walk to where the cache was supposed to be and it took me nearly an hour to get back through a bit of uncertain territory. The way it directed me back was NOT the way I'd come so I had to walk along side a major road, through a bit of brush (yuck!) and over a..I'm not even sure what to call it. It was kind of like a little concrete dam across a very small stream, but the water was running over the top and there were large, white stones on either side of the bank. Crossed that, even though the water STANK to high heaven. Phew! Bleh. I was so afraid I was going to slip in the water and break my ankle or a wrist or god only knows what. But eventually I did get home safe and sound. My legs are KILLING ME. I've never walked so far in one shot (unless you count Disneyworld).

So I didn't find the cache..oh well. Maybe next time I'll have better luck.

According to the info, there is another cache not more than a half mile from here. If the weather is nice tomorrow I might go out and try to find it.
