Anyone going Geocaching this weekend? **NEW CACHERS...POP IN!**

So are you having fun, Mugg Man? Welcome to the addiction! :teeth:

Tomorrow our local newspaper will be publishing the geocaching piece a writer was working on a few weeks back. If it's available online, I'll post the link here. Looking forward to it!

Happy caching! :magnify:

Hi Fellow Geocachers!
I know......I haven't been around in ages and I apologize for that. Due to illness, bad weather and house projects, we haven't been out caching for several months. We got hiking sticks for Christmas and haven't even used them yet. :confused3 We are hoping to get out soon though and are actually considering a 2 or 3 day caching vacation in April. We're having our wood floors sanded and refinished and figure it might be good to get away. I'm sure the dogs are itching to get out, too.
Anyway, we're getting snow, sleet and freezing rain right now so it doesn't look good for this coming weekend. I do have some cache maintenance to do so I was hoping the weather would cooperate but it doesn't look like it is going to.
I really like the large acorn! I'll have to find one of those!
Pin Wizard - Thanks for keeping the thread going! I really have to get back more often.
Our granddaughter, Erin, just turned 2. Hard to believe. And, our Navy son, David, is engaged and planning a wedding for August in VA Beach! We're thinking of spending the week there so we might get to meet up with you for a couple caches, Sandy! We've never been to VA Beach so we could use some info on the unique/fun (and not too difficult) caches there. :cool2:
I guess that's it for now.
Good caching!
Mike of Team SAR-Dogs

Did anyone catch the GPS'ing in WDW??? Look at the article! Tom cant wait
Sorry! Don't remember getting a notification that someone posted on this thread. :confused3

Do you have a link to an article to share? :teeth: Did you go on your trip yet? Etc., etc., etc. :teeth:

Welcome back, Mike! Great to "see" you! :goodvibes

Wow! Can't believe Erin is 2. Seems like she was just a tiny one. And congratulations on David's engagement! I'll have to guess that the fiance' is from the VA Beach area. Is that right, or do they just want to get married here? YES...let me know when you're here!!! Would love to go caching with you and your wife. So nice to actually meet people!   I'll have to start thinking about some good caches here. There are sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo many in Hampton Roads.

Sorry about illness, can't do too much about the weather, and hope the projects went/are going well. The hiking sticks sound great! Definitely get out there and try them out when the weather allows.

Finishing the floors sounds great. I'd love to put wood floors in here, but I haven't looked into it yet. It's taken me a while to adjust my thinking after having great ceramic tile in FL so many years. :teeth: I'm sure the tile would be cold during the winter months in VA. I can see why wood is more popular here.

You should defintely take that 2 or 3 day "mini-vacation" when you have a chance. And caching in an area you don't visit often or haven't visited would be fun. A couple weeks ago we went to visit my sister in Fairfax. Another area with lots of caches! I put the 100 closest in my GPS prior to going up, and they were all within a 3.7 mile radius of her! Woooo hooo!! We only grabbed 5 caches in her area on the way up. :( Tried a few micros that didn't turn up. But at least we found the first 5! :teeth: Can't wait for the next trip. :teeth:

Anyone else been out caching? :magnify:

Hi again!
David's fiancee is actually from Texas. She is also in the Navy and is an Air Traffic Controller stationed aboard the USS Bataan in Norfolk; that's why they are thinking VA Beach.
Gotta go!
Good caching!
Mike

Hello again to everybody, I wondered if our little group had totally died off. Glad to hear that for the most part folks are doing ok. We are in the middle of yet another ice/snow/sleet storm here in Missouri. This is the winter that will just never end! The kids have missed so much school that they are extending the school year by two weeks as of now. They have used up all of their snow days, all of their spring break, all of the built in snow days, and are now having to add to the end of the year. Bad part is that we are supposed to leave on vacation May 15th....and as of right now school is going until May 26th I think. I went to my daughter's school and spoke to the admin, they assured me it would be OK for her to still go. Good thing cuz she was going to go anyway. I am SOOOO excited about this vacation!:cool1: It is an all girl trip to DL! We have never been there before! First trip for us to Cal, can't wait to get some caches there too. My best friend, her two girls, my mother in law, my DD and I are doing for 11 days.
Anybody able to get out and do any caching lately? Any creative ones that you have visited? I would love to hear some cool ideas.
Happy hunting!pirate:

Hi, lilallybean! Good to hear about your upcoming trip to DL!  I'm sure you'll have a blast.

No exciting caches here. And zooming out the door for a FTF seems to have been cut back depending on the container. Too many micros going out, not enough regular. There's two new micros in the woods. Forget it. LOL! And one of those is a multi. :(

I recently placed two Mystery caches. One is a puzzle of sorts to figure out. Based that one on one in Norfolk that was archived. It took forever for the bell to to off for me, but when it did, it was a lot of fun doing that puzzle. A shame it was archived. The area had the dreaded No Trespassing signs go up. My other is based on a cache we found in Fredericksburg. Find something unique to our area of VA and post a pic with you or your GPS. And you need to go find the container and sign the log. So far so good. Any good ones by you? Sorry the weather is keeping you in too much.

Mike...thanks for the details! Makes sense to look at VB. :)

Happy caching! :magnify:

Hi, everyone! :wave2:

Has anyone been to any good caches lately? I need a pep talk. :teeth:

I've been on "vacation" all week (only at home) and have put off going caching every day. Hopefully, we're headed to Fredericksburg tomorrow. I'm dreading the drive. I'm so-so about the caching itself.  :earseek: I'd probably have more fun if we were caching with a group of people. But knowing darling son would rather be home playing video games and going to movies and Busch Gardens with friends (which he's done all week on spring break!), I'm less than enthused.

Anyone have FUN caching lately? :woohoo: :woohoo:

Hello  I have a question............................

Why does your Thread Title say "UPDATE ON PAGE ONE...A FIND"???????????????????????????

Hi all! I am ecstatic to find this thread. DH and I have just started letterboxing but would like to venture into geocaching as well. In fact, we have found a few geocache's while searching for boxes. I don't know anything about GPS'. Can anyone give rec's on GPS or what to look for when we start shopping? Or a website that gives reviews or tips on buying GPS'?
TIA!

Well, the nearest Earthcache to me is nearly a hundred miles away. Sigh. But I can still search virtual caches...
Okay. Can someone explain to me what a virtual cache and an Earthcache are?
Hey guys. I'm popping in to show you my latest creation.

Almost finished. I just need to paint the orange cap brown.

The plan is to:
call it "sometimes you feel like a nut";
hang it in a pine tree, but in an area of lots of oak trees & acorns; and
list it as a micro so they think they are looking for a small cylinder cache in the woods. hehehehehehe

It was a $2.97 LARGE hollow Christmas ornament from Walmart; cut a hole for an orange waterproof match container & filled acorn with spray foam.

That is incredible! I would love to find that.

I don't know why I didn't come into this thread earlier! I had always heard of Geocaching, but now that I've read a few pages of the thread I think this is the perfect way for DH and I to get active and have fun doing it!

I'd love to know some more about some of the stuff you guys have done doing this!
What are some of the most fun finds you guys have had? :goodvibes

As a matter of fact I have had some GREAT caching recently! I went to MOGA, a MEGA event! My daughter, sister, and I had a blast! We didn't get as many caches as I would have liked, but we hiked more than 10 miles in the 2 days. The 'trails' led us through some rough woods so we got a good work out! When we got our list of caches they were just numbered, we didn't have cache names. When I got home and got the LIST of names I about feel over!!!:upsidedow Three of the caches that we DIDN'T get and were right next to each other-really caught my eye. My Mom had gone to boarding school in Jamaica, her name was Elba, and she LOVED turtles. The three caches right next to eachother....Jamaice, Elba, and Turtle!!! So now I HAVE to go back and get those. I know silly to get so excited about something like that, but she has been gone almost 14 years and I grab onto anything that helps me and the kids connect to her just a little.
I also got a Garmin 60CSx this last week! Em and I are getting ready to head out and give it a try. We may just work on the virtual at the St. Louis arch since they are calling for rain and snow.
Hope you all have a great day!!! Happy hunting!

LOL! That's from way back. It just makes it a bit easier to find the thread in the listings.

Welcome, Kycha!

You found geocaches while letterboxing? :teeth: We usually find the letterboxes and can't find the cache! :lmao: :lmao:

We started with a little yellow E-trex for $99. We found them at Bass Pro Shops. Sports Authority also had some. If you try the forums on this site, you'll probably find some for sale. My E-trex died in the middle of caching away from home. I didn't have a clue where to get one. Then I remember I had a spare in the car. Whew! ;) Right now I have a Garmin 60CSx...LOVE it!!

Virtual caches can no longer be placed. The ones that are still around have been grandfathered in. With those, there's not an actual cache container to find. You need to read the cache page and see what it is the cache owner is showing you. Some may require you post a picture of you with your GPS, some may have you answer questions with you e-mailing the answers. They really are a lot of fun and interesting! We always learn something new with them.

Earthcaches are another type of Virtual...in a way. There is a separate Earthcache site where they are reviewed and approved. Then they can be posted on Geocaching.com also.

http://www.earthcache.org/

You can find Earthcaches on that site easily for every state and country. Recently, they changed the requirements to log an Earthcache as a find. Now the owner must list specific questions to be answered. And some do still require a picture. These are a lot of fun and educational at the same time. They pretty much deal with geology, geography, etc. They're one of my favorite types to search for!

Hope you get started and have fun!

Happy caching! :magnify:

Welcome, RayaniFoxmur! :wave2:

(Sheesh...I haven't gotten notifications of all these posts! So much for "immediate" notification.) LOL!

I have to say that Geocaching is practically painless exercise! The 4.5 and 5 terrains may be a bit rough. We have a lot of fun and don't even think of the exercise we're getting. Can't beat that!

I'm sure you'll find a lot of different answers for fun caches we've found, great times we've had, etc. We like events where cachers get together. And we like caching in a group. Woo hoo! The more eyes looking the better...in my book. And we still have fun when it's just us.

A few of my favorites...

A trip through a mall gathering information, then finding the cache!

http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GCHJFW

A lot of fun hunting a night cache with friends...

A nice hike for this Earthcache with the terrain changing from rocky to dirt to lush green. And let's not forget the river itself...

Anyone else? :teeth: I'd love to read others' favorites, too!!

Hi, lilallybean!

How's the new 60CSx? The names of those three caches are too much! I'd be hunting for them also!!! Did you go back and get them yet? Glad I'm not the only one that can get funny with cache names. Based on names, there are some I just have to get. And there's actually one I'm avoiding due to its name.

A Mega event? Woooo hoooo!!! I'm sure you had a blast. Have you given any thought to heading to Geo Woodstock?

Our friends went to MOGA and I think they are going back next year too. Haven't talked about it, but might join them.

Oh yeah. You'll get active. :goodvibes Nothing like walking miles in the heat and snow, or paddling a canoe, or rappelling a cliff to log another cache. All things we've done or considered doing. Rappelling was postponed due to rain. ;) Oh, don't forget jetskiing to caches! My favorite.

Just please don't become one of those geocachers who drive from parking lot to parking lot lifting up lamppost skirts looking for 35mm film canisters.

That is NOT what geocaching was originally intended to be about. It was about getting outside, to beautiful places or interesting places you didn't otherwise know about.

Just for the heck of it, I went back and read the logs from our first hidden cache in 2002. Amazing to think that normal people would walk thru the shallow river to get to the cache once they realized they parked on the wrong side of it. I think geocaching has attracted too many non-adventurous types today and has sucked all the fun out of the game with these parking lot finds.

Oh. Don't forget the brain exercises too! Puzzle caches are great fun! I love learning new things.

I can take or leave lamp post caches. I like the hikes in the parks in the fall and winter, but I've just been in the brush lately and came home with three ticks. Not hiking the woods during the summer.

There is plenty out there to see! Sometimes you'll feel like taking the hikes, other times you may want the park and grabs like lamp posts. We like to cache in the 90 degree weather, but after one trip last year and finding how much hotter the woods are, we'll skip it in that weather.

Happy caching! :magnify:
