Anyone Game? It’s my Sep 2013 Blog! I'm home; with a TR link in #1189, 10/14

We can compare colours!

After lunch sounds good. Let's wait to see what Blissful Bites are available and we can pick a booth to meet at. Alternatively, we can try for the Boulangerie in France or Kuche Karamel in Germany.

:thumbsup2

Sorry for the late reply, just saw this tonight. That's fine with me.

Awesome work organising your MeFoto tripod, I mean ANZ, Dismeet.

:rotfl2:

Yup. I figure the tripods will enjoy sharing notes about their respective owners. I'm pretty sure mine will be whining about me dragging it out into sand and desert. ;)

I was going to test mine out tonight, but was out shopping and missed sunset. Too cold now. Will try again tomorrow.

It's the May the Fourth Be with You DisMeet!

If it is May the 4th, it must be another Melbourne DisMeet.

Fittingly, our DisMeet location had a touch of the Stars about it.....(fortunately, no Wars!)

The Observatory Cafe, with a view to match. The Observatory has been here since about 1861.

We seem to be settling in on a very regular group of 3DisFriends. Minniemum taking the picture, with Zanzibar, Fairy Floss, Zaccy (and Zaccy in front) and myself (PiO) in attendance.

Some of us started with a caffeine hit.

Others in the group went with the chocolate addiction.

But, we were having lunch today.

The Chicken, spring onion and cucumber point sandwiches.

Chicken and avocado baguette.

Ham and Cheese Focaccia.

Two of us decided on the chicken, mushroom and leek pie.

Some of us finished with coffee and florentine.

As always, conversation did touch on Disney; and our respective trips. But we spent a lot of time catching up on life in general and how things have been since the last time we saw each other.

Our catch-ups are now at a regular enough interval that we are becoming firm 3D friends. :goodvibes

And yes, there are definitely plans to have another Melbourne DisMeet in June.

Reading about your lovely DIS meet whilst starving and dinner's not quite ready? Bad move on my part. :lmao:

Food looks divine, as does the company! :goodvibes

I've thoroughly enjoyed all our DisMeets, and I'm enjoying seeing a bit more of Melbourne too! I think I've just about made more trips into the city this year than the whole time I've been leaving here :lmao:

Do we get to see the photos you took in the gardens PIO?

How fun to have monthly DISmeets! That looks like a great time!

The DIS meet is lovely.

Wish we had something like here....

I really enjoy DisMeets.

Everything looks so delicious.

I'm hungry. (And I just had breakfast).

:lmao: I'm hungry too! It must be lunchtime here.

Zaccy and I ended up chatting; and I didn't end up taking any pictures in the garden. I need to head back and take more time there.

::yes:: Wish we could meet up at least monthly!

Me too!
I rarely ventured into the city before discovering my new friends
.... And you're all SO nice <3 xx

How cool to befriend people on here and get to see them in person often! Most of my friends and family do not get my Disney infatuation. I cannot wait to have my first meet with someone who really gets it. The food looked good too.

Well next time we go to Vegas we will definitely have to meet up. We stay at Sam's Town, so it's a bit of a trek for you, we'll have to find a spot in the middle! :thumbsup2

Otherwise, next trip to DL, I'll come out and see you!

My MIL lives on the Golf Course right near Sam's Town. I drive over there all the time. In good traffic, it takes a little over 30 minutes. In bad traffic, it takes closer to an hour. The drive does not scare me, and I would love to drop by and say hello. I have visited LA enough times to know that your traffic is way worse than mine, so an hour in traffic is still not too bad.

I originally booked 2 nights (10/25 and 10/26) at Dl, because Crap said he had no more vacation time. We honeymooned at WDW, and I wanted to spend our 10 year anniversary there too. When he told me he had no vacation time, I told him just to take off our anniversary, which fell on on Friday thankfully. It also is a State Holiday (so no school for Xander). After I booked Disneyland, Crap found out he had a week of vacation he was not aware of. He thought he had to complete 2 years before he got it, but it was only 18 months! Now, we give up the 27th at Dl, but we are using it to travel to WDW! Anyway, my point is I only have one day and one (hopefully) Halloween party at Dl. I know you are going earlier that month, and my days are not flexible, so I will likely see you in Vegas first.

It's hard to believe PiO posted about a potential Melbourne Dismeet on the Australian boards all the way back in December 2011 and didn't get any takers.:confused3

In December 2012, I posted a very similar thread. Between PiO, Zaccy, Zanzibar and I, we decided to have our first DISmeet in February 2013. Since that auspicious first DISmeet in February, we've had back to back hosting duties in March (Caroline NZ's grand prix visit) and April (Aussie Wendy's Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Pirates of the Caribbean visit). Caroline is from NZ and Aussie Wendy lives in a different state about a 2 hour flight away. Come May and we've really found our groove. We've dropped our guards, gotten to know each other and shared plenty of laughs.

A June DISmeet is already in the works and I can't wait to see my new found friends again.

I'm not quite sure what you are saying in the above paragraph, but you do realize that with the information you have given me in this post that I live closer to Disneyland than you live to your mother.... :scratchin . :rolleyes1

We will have to try and tee something up, one of these years.

Mickey Micro Cosmos #2 - Special Fried Rice

In my post about ADRs I think I mentioned that the Gamers have decided that it would be fun to have a cook-out for one of the nights that were together. We are up to dinner for 10 people on this night and it is strictly potluck. Having said that, we seemed to have worked up a menu for the night!

I've just double checked Alisons PTR and she made a similar comment about us having worked up a menu - and it seems like shes also starting to test out recipes for the cookout. And the link to her particular recipe is here.

One of the things that might work for the cookout as a side is fried rice. Being of South East Asian descent, the style of fried rice we cook involves soya sauce and/or kecap manis.

And there lies the issue - Kecap manis is an ingredient that might not be readily available. I've googled it and know that I can make my own if I had brown sugar and soya sauce.....but really! I'm on holiday!!

So, rather than worry about it, I've been testing out the Hong Kong style of fried rice.

My starting ingredients:

  • Cooked shrimp
  • String beans, about 150 g - diced
  • Frozen peas
  • Carrots, 2 or 3 - diced
  • Eggs, 3
  • Cooking oil
  • Garlic, ginger
  • Salt, pepper - to taste
  • Vegetable stock powder - 2 teaspoon
  • Rice, 1.5 cups

I tested out cooking rice in the microwave. There was about 1.5 cups of rice (cooked in about 3 cups water) in this run-through and I zapped it for about 14 minutes. I ended up checking the rice on a minute basis from the 11 minute mark. I suspect the time it will take to cook the rice will depend on the strength of the micro in the room.

I did use a wok; and I need to test this out with a frypan next. I started by scrambling the egg in the wok with a little oil.

After the eggs were cooked, I fried the garlic and ginger....

....with the carrot and string beans.

After I tossed everything for a couple of minutes, I added the cooked shrimp.

And then the frozen peas. I gave the ingredients a toss for a minute of two between additions.

After a couple of minutes, add the egg and the rice, together with salt, pepper and the vegetable stock.

Toss all the ingredients together and continue to cook for another 3 - 4 minutes (or until the rice is warmed through).

The finished dish!

For my tastes, I miss the kecap manis. But really, I think this will make a cracking alternative without the stress of trying to source the kecap manis.
