Airfare is really killing our budget, but we decided to go over our Spring break (3/13) anyways...

We are thinking of a road trip NEXT summer (2014).

Am I crazy? I would be saving about 700.00 vs airfare. It costs around 400.00 rt to drive or 1000 to fly. 600.00 is a nice amount to save.

Its just myself and my 14 y/o.... o what do you think?

No way I would drive that! Do you fly SW out of Love Field? SW runs great specials if you watch out for them. Last weekend, I could have booked a RT to MCO from MSY for $200!!! That's awesome.

Another option for SW - get the rapid rewards credit card when they offer the 50K points and fly for free...

Or check fares flying in to Tampa, as they seem to be much cheaper more often than not. And it's only about an hours drive to Orlando.

So I'd get the credit card if you can. Book Tampa if it's cheaper, then watch out for Orlando fares to drop and switch over when they do since SW doesn't charge change fees! I'd do anything not to drive :scared1:

Yep! We normally drive & stay a couple of days in Pensacola Beach (both ways.) We happen to be flying next month just because we scored an awesome Southwest deal when the Dec. rates were first offered.

We drove last summer (2012) from San Antonio. Your driving budget is way to low. Gas alone cost us $550. Not including meals and we stayed with friends one night, but you may need a hotel room, etc. Otherwise, The drive was not bad. But I don't feel like it saved us as much as I thought it would.

We drove it last summer.

Stayed in Mobile one night on the way to Orlando. Stayed 3 nights at Destin on the way home. There are 4 of us and flight prices were just too high plus we wanted a few beach days.

For just two of you the fly vs drive savings is tighter. A good deal may still come out that would make it a better deal to fly.

You've got to also consider the value of your time. If you're having to cut your park (fun) days by 2 to account for your travel overnights it might not be worth it. For us, we had the time. Our savings by driving for the 4 us paid for our beach days.

I got those figures from the Web...
I wonder how.much cash it costs to drive to Orlando.
If we do this over the summer, I can take my time, stay st a couple hotels and not tire myself.
