Hi,

Has anyone flown with first choice from nottingham? If you have I'd be grateful if you could answer a few questions:

Do they use the 767 (I think!) planes as they do from manchester, etc.?
Is the airport really nearer Doncaster? We're only about 1 - 1 1/2 hours from donny.
What's the airport like for parking/crowds, etc.?

Hopefully I'll get some replies! Have been pricing up for aug 07 on first choice and virgin sites, and there's about 500 price difference. Felt I should at least try for the school hols after reading the thread on taking term time off!
Of course I'd have a few hundred in tesco vouchers to take off the virgin price.

Any other pro's and con's would be appreciated while I ramble away to myself....!

I can't help much I'm afraid, but can tell you that Nottingham / East Midlands Airport is at Castle Donnington, just off M1 junction 24 (I think). It's a small airport so not usually too busy and parking is good. Hopefully someone can help you further.

1. I don't know for sure but the aircraft but it's likely to be a 767 derivative.

2. If by Nottingham Airport you mean East Midlands Airport (I never will refer to it as Nottingham East Midlands as it's in Leicestershire!!!!!), then no, it's not near Doncaster. As Dee points out, it's at Castle Donnington off J24 of the M1.

3. It's a great little airport. During the summer season it can get a bit busy but that's to be expected. The car parking facilities are good and there are regular shuttle buses from the outlying long-stay parks into the terminal.

As you're in North Yorkshire it'd probably the same journey time to EMA as it would be to travel to Manchester airport.

Yes but Nottingham has a better ring to it than East Midlands, as we are the major city in the East Midlands :)

It's not near Doncaster.

Nottingham Airport??? Never heard of it :confused3

There is a very nice East Midlands Airport though :cheer2:

If we're talking about crime statistics, yes, Nottingham is the major city for the whole country ;)

That survey underestimates the number of people living here by a huge amount. That vastly changes the murders per 100,00 statistic amongst others. I've lived here all my life, never had one problem - nothing.

We are the most over subscribed university city after London, strange that, you'd think people wouldn't want to come here would you?

We are the forth most visited city for shopping also, you'd think people wouldn't bother, wouldn't you if they were risking being murdered on the walk home from Marks and Spencers?

wow ... and you never trotted out that the other cliche about your 3rd division club winning the European Cup twice last century. :rotfl2:

i used to think nottingham was everything i ever wanted out of a place where i lived....but then i came to liverpool for university and I can safely say I'm never moving back to Nottingham. I enjoyed my time there but I've realised there's other great places out there.

(and if they really didn't want it to be called Nottingham EMA do you really think they would have bothered changing it?)

Oh EAST MIDLANDS! Sorry for the confusion, I believe the airport near Doncaster has a large runway and they are doing longhaul flights now, and they've called it something like Robin Hood Airport if I'm not mistaken!

I've flown twice from East Midlands (I think it used to be called Derby didn't it?) and it is about the same distance for us as Manchester, but I think I'd rather drive to EM despite it being off the M1, than tackling the M62 around Manchester!

Our local airport will always be Teesside to us even though its officially Durham Tees Valley!!

Lol - one thing, the reason I don't trot out that cliche' is because I can die knowing my club reached the highest a european club can possibly get - twice. I don't need to remind anyone of it. It'll never happen again, but we've been there, done that...who do you support?

I wonder why the airport isn't called the Derby East Midlands airport? :thumbsup2

Remember the name "Nottingham East Midlands Airport"

You are only young, there are many great places you will see and visit. Liverpool is a great vibrant place, if people look beyond the usual banal stereotypes that have been trotted out here.......

don't get me wrong, nottingham is a great place, and i have the fondest memories of everything I saw and did there (except working at the restaurant in Debenhams....never again!) - but I just know I'm destined for something else. I'm the first one of my family to go to university, let alone leave home to the other end of the country....I just believe that my 'true' home isn't the land of robin hood.

There are some very rough and violent people that live in Nottingham but there are also some wonderful people who make the city a better place just by being in it. But then again it's the same anywhere. There is a stereotype for liverpool, but looking beyond that there's real talent and genuine hearts :goodvibes

Sorry I know this is off topic, but kev and I are from the same neck of the woods!

Id say east midlands is about 60 to 70 mins further south than doncaster. Its a nice little aiport good facilities and parking is within walking distance of the terminal.

There is a long stay carpark that you need to get a shuttle bus to reach, so it depends on which carpark you can get into to.

Also the drop off/pick up arrangements at the airport are a pain!. You are not allowed to pull up outside the terminal building. Instead you have to drive into the short stay carpark and get a parking ticket that gives you 15-20 minutes free parking while you drop off or pick someone up.

Also the security checks can be very slow and I've seen long lines stretching back right into the check in hall.

Here we go ... former glory crutches for third division mediocrity :)

As for the name of the airport, it is "East Midlands Airport" and resides in the wonderful and beautiful county of Leicestershire, next to the former county of Robin Hood (as everyone knows he was really from Yorkshire) and Derbyshire.

Erm....nope it's now known officialy as "Nottingham East Midlands Airport"

http://www.nottinghamema.com/cms/1/home.html

If you are in any more doubt, the airport trades as "Nottingham East Midlands Airport Limited" also.

I drove past it yesterday and the signage says "Nottingham East Midlands Airport"

They floated the idea of calling it Leicester East Midlands Airport, but I believe out of the four options - original name, Derby and Nottingham, Leicester came bottom.

:rolleyes1 I don't want to get involved in the argument... but I think Kevin is right, its 'Nottingham East Midlands' airport.
