Anyone ever ....

We also will take a piece of fruit, or a cookie. That's about it. Last week we were in Amsterdam and the hotel provided a wonderful breakfast buffet each morning. It was a very nice buffet. I looked over and this woman with her two kids had three or four tupperware like containers. She put sliced meat and cheese in one, bread/rolls in another, and lord knows what went into the other two. I was shocked! She then stashed them all in this large carry on type bag.

eek! dont get mad I was just asking because I think I asked someone what was with bringing ziploc baggies and they told me to bring food back from ts meals..lol.. If we order a pizza or something then I would probably save it in the tupperware but i'm the kinda person who doesnt even like to go up more than once to a buffet! The idea of someone "stashing" food is a funny thought though ...lol

I'm sure the person mentioning the baggies meant the TS meals where you order off a menu (in which case, it's totally fine to bring left-overs back to the resort).

These buffet questions pop up every few week or so, and I always find them perplexing. Are there truly people who haven't eaten at a buffet until they go to WDW?:confused3 . It's a buffet, the same as buffets everywhere. :rolleyes1

I read this not too long ago and I've been using it on my kids ever since, with all their, "But so-and-so...": “Wrong is wrong even if everybody is doing it and right is right even if nobody is doing it.”

I get that was not your particular intent to say if others are doing it, it must be OK, but I just couldn't resist putting it out there for those (probably lurking) who might think that makes it OK.

“Thank you”, “please”, “excuse me” are just always right, as is not stealing food from a buffet. If it's off your plate and you took it with good intentions to eat it at the time, say a piece of fruit or two, then fine. But you shouldn't, under those circumstances, have an issue asking the server for something to put it in. If you can't do it openly and need to "sneak" (not that the OP said that), your answer is right there whether or not it's OK.

yes, I didn't mean it to sound like if other people do wrong stuff, it's ok... re-reading my post I see where it could sound like that... an example of my thought was how I explain littering to my kids - tossing a tiny piece of paper on the ground - kids might say "it's just one tiny piece", so I'll explain to my kids if *everyone* tossed just one tiny piece, our world would be one big garbage dump... etc, etc. I think you got my idea anyway, but just wanted to clarify because it could be read the opposite of what I meant. thanks for pointing that out. :)

I admit I havent eaten at a buffet more than once or twice in my life . Last time it was years ago with my MIL. I guess its just not my thing

Some buffets have take out containers (like China Buffett), but you would pay for a seperate meal. Pay for your eat in dinners, then pay for a take out container in addition.

I am guilty of taking boxed cereals, whole fruit, or a pastry wrapped in a napkin. It is wrong, I know it is wrong but I still do it and I am not making up excuses for it. This past March we stayed at the Embassy Suites before and after our cruise and they offer a breakfast buffet and I had taken two banana for the kids (DD5, DS3) snack later in the day. On the way home I took a muffin and banana for the flight home, we had an early flight back home. I would not think of taking tupperware or ziploc baggies to pack eggs, bacon, or anything of that nature. Geesh, I feel like I am in the confessional but I draw the line at the premediated thought of bringing my own to go containers. I would be giving them the hard stare but I don't think I would say anything, I am guilty of doing the same thing but not on that level.

I agree with the whole fruit or 'if it fits in a napkin in your purse' rule. I've been known to grab a banana, or a couple cookies for later, and I think that's okay and a lot of people do it. I could eat it there and be a glutton, but I'd rather save it for later.

I've only ever taken something if we've put it on our plates and then not eaten it - mainly my DD's - as I never make them clear their plates.

We have taken cookies home in the past BUT they have had a couple of bites out them and they have openly had these in their hands when we left so no hiding the food.

I could never pre meditate putting something on my plate to take out - surely that's stealing???

To be honest I've never asked for my meal to be "wrapped" when I haven't finished it - I just let them take it away. It's not until I've seen other diners getting their meals boxed up that I realise I've forgotten again! :rotfl:

We've only ever taken an apple or banana along with us - that either didn't get finished at the table - or the one who originally selected it changed his/her mind during the meal because of all of the other things already eaten (i.e. "I'm full!).

go to a buffet/family style meal and pack some food away for later?? I saw a thread about this somewhere but dont want to get in trouble at the restaurant for doing it. I was thinking of packing some throw away tupperware and saving some food for later. Any thoughts??

You are joking right?

I've taken an apple before but I asked specifically if I could take one for the baby for later. They thought I was nuts for asking and said I could take all the fruit I wanted (this was at Chef Mickey's). I'm not sure if it was because the fruit was starting to turn or they just didn't care but I wouldn't have taken it w/o permission. Buffets just don't work like that.

You can do a take away at many buffets (outside WDW at least) but they give you a couple containers (one for soup and one for food) which I guess you could stuff if you tried. :confused3

We took a banana from Chef Mickey's and put it in our backpack to go to MGM. While waiting for Lightning & Mater one of us used the backpack as a seat. Bad idea! :lmao:

I totally got what you meant. It's just that there are some things, unlike polluting, that really wouldn't matter if nobody/everybody did it. For example, thank you notes. Many people don't write them anymore, but it is still the proper (right) thing to do. It'd more the littler things I was meaning to include.

I agree - sometimes at a buffet your eyes are bigger than your stomach and I have taken the apple or banana that we got too full for. I agree that packing containers for that purpose is definitely crossing the line!

Think about it like this - would the buffet/family style meal place give you a take-out container for your left overs? If they would then it is fine to take the food.

I'd leave the tupperware at home and ask for carry-out containers. If they give you one then it is OK. If they don't give you one then obviously it is not OK.

We've taken one of our preschooler's food with us after eating at character buffets. She would be so excited about the charcters that she wouldn't eat her food. We asked for a container and they gave us one. :)

Buffet restaurants around here have signs that say "Take only what you can eat. If you take more food than you can eat at the table, you will be charged extra." The signs mean "Don't waste food". I've seen them charge people who leave food on their plates when they're done.

Fortunately, you CAN pack tupperware. If you want to take tupperware food with you, they have a scale at the front of the restaurant. They weigh what you take and charge $8.99/lb.
