Anyone ever work for the US Census?

Thanks DisneyDaz - sounds less scary now. Sorry for the issues you had though.

Luckily, I only came upon one street which I had to partially rename. But I know my CL had several streets that the HHC said went on but were actually dead ends.

Indeed I have just been fired. He claimed it was because I did not notify him of the time I was address canvassing in the form of an answering machine message, although I called every morning and did not receive a response.

He denies that I called him, and further claims that his cell phone does not have a missed calls list.

I offered to submit nightly written plans for the subsequent day and begged him to get in touch with me via the HHC message service. I informed him that he could contact me through email on my blackberry. He failed to show up for a planned meeting in the field, and claims no knowledge of it.

When i have gotten in touch with him, he did not know who I was several calls in a row and told me to call the other guy.

He went on to say that I had "an attitude" from the beginning, and in training threw my HHC in frustration. I found that astonishing to hear, particularly as he was not there.

I think that he must have been frightfully overworked, and that we had more census workers than we need. The irony here is that i was doing a great job. I strapped on hiking boots and canvassed busy streets with no shoulder in the mud and heat on foot to get more done. Oh, well. I never imagined that i would be fired from a job, much less a part-time silly one like this.

Sorry to hear that - but I'm not surprised.. As I stated before, I worked in the office end of the census and when they suddenly came up with the mandatory OT, I quit.. Those who just said they couldn't do it were fired on the spot..

I am sorry for all the problems that everybody has had. Sounds like there's some pretty crappy (can I say that) supervisors out there.

All the AA's left in our area are too big for just one person. So they have been assigning them to my DH and me together. We asked our CL today for an area that we could finish up today and tomorrow. I really didn't want to work the weekend. Well, he said that there were about 690 housing units in the AA. I surveyed the entire area before we started to work on it today. Surprise!! There are now 1, but 3 new housing developments that are not accounted for. The streets have to be added and all the houses have to be added. Plus, one of the other new developments that is on my HHC, all the streets are wrong. I have to take out virtually very street and redraw them. I immediately called our CL to tell him that the job could not be completed on Thursday and Friday and that it would be at least Monday before it would be completed. Thankfully, he was good with that. However, depending on how much we get accomplished tomorrow, we both will probably end up working at least 4 hours on Saturday anyway. We can't do anymore that that, because we will be maxed out on hours for this week.

By the way, I hate map spots. :sad2: I hate map spots by trees, by tall townhouses, by townhouses in tight little circles. Map spots just don't like to cooperate when there are storms in the area, when there are clouds or when they just don't want to. :scared1:

I was just given what may be my last AA. My CL told me that training will begin for QA next Wednesday but no one knows who is going to get called in. Hopefully I will get called for this. Hopefully before Tuesday night...LOL

How long have you been working that you are out of work? My DH and I have just finished up our 5th full week of address canvassing. Our CL has recommended us both for QA, but I don't know when they will start training for it.

What does QA stand for?

I have been working for 3 weeks. They did 7 rounds of training for our area. From what I understand they only needed 3. We just had another group finish training last Friday and they are not going to get any AA's.

Well, the end is in sight for DH and me. We learned from our CL today that all HHC's (etc.) have to be turned in by Friday -- and work for the enumerators will end. I have my fingers crossed that we will be called to work on the next phase. I continue to look for a job almost everyday, but nothing has developed yet. I guess I will be going back on unemployment. :sad1:

hi, i am an ex-enumerator. I was wondering have anybody heard anything about the next phase. I was told if I work hard(which I did) I would be called back around mid-June to train for the OLQ phase. H ave any body been told the same or differently?

My distict was told late July...at the earliest

I am an ex-quality enumerator, and I these 2 documents today via USPS. It came as a state of shock since I was told 4 weeks ago, I was going to be selected to work the next phase GQV. So I called them, after my mail man left. Quote un quote, I asked” Hi, I am Quality enumerator, who was promised to work the up coming phase if I worked well in this passed phase, however I just receive release or termination papers, whatever you want to called them , so When is this next phase supposedly supoosed to start this week or next?,,,And guess what the clek tell me, UHHHHHHHH ,IT PROBABLY WILL START SEPT,i WAS LIKE bull#@%@%@, you guys told me June, I am going to call the atlanta office, (I work out of the montgomery,al office.

We all received termination papers. I asked about them before. This does not mean that you won't be working the next phase. What I did learn from working the census is whatever time frame they tell you add at least a month.

We all signed termination papers here too - told that if we move on that we have to be terminated and re-hired because it is officially a different position under a different operation.

I think I remember them saying end of summer/beginning of fall for the next phase.

FYI, Here in Montana I was told it would be September and I never signed any termination papers.
I didn't sign termination papers but I did sign turning in my HHC. My CL also filled out paperwork stating that I am willing to work the next phase. About 2 weeks later I got the papers in the mail.

Yes, I got the papers in the mail - SF50 I think it is. It just is a federal government form that shows that you worked for the federal government and the details, salary, dates, etc.

Everybody will have to be rehired to work the next phase. I was really hoping that would be earlier than September though.

I just received a call for rehire. Not many people are being hired now, but they are starting on a few more small phases and some recruiting and testing positions. The big hiring will be the non-response/follow up phase. Goodluck to everyone!

Are you doing GQ? I did that in Sept. and was told about a month ago that they would be hiring about now for follow-ups & CL's. What position did you get?

Congrats!:thumbsup2
