DD9 got seven stitches in her hand last week...she fell at the park and must have landed on a piece of glass or something. She got her stitches out today and it looks awful:sad2:it's right on the palm side of her hand, below her thumb. I didn't think to ask the Dr today about scarring because I was so queasy from watching her take the stitches out (I'd never be able to work in the medical field ) Anyway...has anyone ever used Mederma to help reduce scarring? I wonder if it's worthwhile?

I used Maderma for Kids on my son. Fell and had stitches in forehead. We had to wait until the sore healed completely before using, so you may still have to wait a few weeks.
I think it really helped to reduce the appearance of the scar. If you look hard enough, it is still there, but faded not noticable.

DD split her chin open when she was 6. After the stitches came out, the dr told us to put vitamin E cream on it every day for a year. We did this faithfully and the scar is all but invisible. You have to know it's there and really search for it to see it.

I was bitten on the face by a dog when I was in college. The Dr suggested Vitamin E capsules for the scar. Break them open and squeeze the vitamin E onto the scar. I did that twice/day for several weeks. It is barely noticable now.

I used Mederma on the scars on my hand after I had carpal tunnel surgery. It did seem to help, especially with the wound that failed to adhere and had a really broad scar. You do have to wait for it to be completely healed to use it.

I didn't use if on my elbow scars from cubital tunnel surgery and they are much more prominent but they are a lot newer so I can't really compare. I also didn't use it on the scars on my leg where they rebuilt my ankle after I shattered it - by the time the cast came off I figured it wasn't worth bothering with. Those scars have faded pretty nicely without help.

my dd who is 9 now busted her chin at the pool a couple years ago. It required nine stitches! We used the kid's mederma (I think it was purple and faded to clear when you rubbed it?) and you have to look reeeeally hard now to see the scar. It's all but invisible.

I've used Mederma on three different scars and I think it made a noticeable improvement. I guess I cant say how I would have healed w/o it but over time my scars are barely visible.

Never used mederma, but have used Vitamin E cream as recommended by our doctors. Scars are barely visible.

thanks for the replies...sounds like either vitamin e or mederma would be good choices to help reduce the scarring. I have to wait a while for the laceration to completely heal still and DD has an appointment for a physical on 7/8 so I can check with the Dr then too. Thanks!

The main ingredient in Mederma is onion juice. Maybe you can do a combo of vitamin e & onion juice.

I've used Mederma and it does work.

But you have to use if 4 times a day for 2 months, and that's hard to do.

Has anyone used it a year later after the accident?:confused3

DD took a HUGE chuck out of her knee last June and it is not healing "right". The doctor suggested it at her check up and I keep forgetting to get it.

That is what the doctor told us to do the second time DS had stiches in his forhead (different doctor the first time--yes DS was a terrible klutz when he was smaller:rolleyes1). He has had stiches on his forehead a total of 3 times (one was surgery, not a fall). The scar from the first set is still vlisible though slight and we used mederma on it. The other two scars are completly gone now--I cannot locate them at all--we used the vitamin E capsules on those. It was the second cut (first time we used vitamin E) that was the biggest and I expecetd it to leave the more noticable scar. For both the mederma and vitamin E we applied it three times a day for four months.

I used Mederma following a biopsy on my foot last year it (along side sunscreen!) worked.
