Anyone ever had a rectangular pizza?

I'm on Long Island and we have a rectangular pie that is thin crust called a Gramma's pie.

Are you thinking of the little caesar's pizzas they had back in the 80s/90s? Those were really large, we used to get coupons in valpak and coupon clippers, and the pizzas were just as you described.

ETA: It was called Little Caesars "Pizza By the Foot"

We still have Little Caesar's here in Champaign/Urbana IL. When my son signed his letter of intent to play college football, he promised pizza at the signing. Luckily Little Caesar's only costs $5 a pizza, so we were able to back him up. However, they were round.

The non Sicilian/non Deep Dish ones that I’ve had the crust is thinner and the sauce more marinara like than pizza sauce like and the mozzarella tends to be slices vs. shredded. So a little different. I prefer them that way, they don’t feel as heavy.

Nope, talking about regular pizzas, not a different kind altogether.

There was a place in STL that sold pizza in a 13X9. From what I’ve since learned of Detroit style, I think that might have been what they were trying to emulate.

Little Cesar’s deep dish style “kind of” emulates this, but it’s nowhere near as good.

Which is kind of funny since they're a Detroit chain.. but I agree, their Detroit-style is a poor imitation. Not bad when you've got three hungry kids in the car and want to get dinner for under $10, but certainly not worth going out of the way for!

Until I opened this thread I had no idea there were people in the world who thought pizza only came in round. The things you can learn on the DIS! :rotfl:

There have been a lot of pizza threads on the DIS over the years. I think I am going to have to do a road trip after I retire and just sample different regional style and shaped pizzas.
I will not however, start calling pizza "a pie". Pizza is "pizza", and "pie" is what you have for dessert after you eat pizza. :)

Yes, they're round now. The ones I was referring to stop existing sometime in the late 90s early 00s.

Yeah, round is the norm, but I didn’t think square or rectangular was something people might not have ever seen.

If you get a chance to try STL style, as a native Missourian, let me just say, “I’m sorry”.

My MIL was from St. Louis and we went back every year to visit relatives for about 20 years. I think of White Castle, Steak N Shake and P'sghettis'. My wife's Aunt practically lived at P'sghettis, and I always found it odd that an Italian restaurant did NOT serve pizza. So all those trips, I can't recall ever having pizza in St. Louis.

Aside from the Elios style frozen pizza, every single pizzeria on Long Island sells a "Sicilian" rectangular pizza.

When I was a kid, you used to be able to get "pizza fingers", little rectangles of cheese and tomato. They were in the frozen bit of the supermarket and were really nice.

We have never called it rectangular pizza. It's either pizza (regular thin/round) or square/Sicilian pie/pizza (thick crust). They come in all shapes :), sizes and names - so I guess anything goes.

My cousin in Nova Scotia just posted photos on FB from his favorite pizza place there.
The pizzas are all round, but they offer two kinds. Italian and Gourmet. And donair meat is one of the toppings. Never heard of donair meat, but I guess it is very popular in that part of the world.

I live in the Detroit area. Our deep dish pizzas are all rectangular in shape.

After going up to Detroit recently, it is only NOW that I had it pointed out to me that JETS Pizza is in our area! Granted it is a not close, but it is not too far to trek to get it.

Dying to get pizza there. LOL.

The first Jet’s pizza opened I believe in 1978 or 1979 about two blocks from our house. My late husband and I were such good customers over the years that Eugene Jett, the owner of Jet’s, approached my husband about opening a franchise. We didn’t do it, but, in hindsight, I kind of wish we had. :)
