I will have quite a bit of a half gallon leftover before we leave on a week long trip this Friday. We will be returning very late, and I do not want to stop at the store on the way home from the airport. Can I just stick the remainder of this half gallon in the fridge and defrost it when I get home, or will freezing it have some adverse effect on it??

I know mothers freeze their breast milk and it is fine, so I am thinking cow's milk would be the same. Has anyone ever done this??

I've done it before, when we were going on vacation, without any adverse effects. It was fine when we came home.

from uk food standards agency:

Can pasteurised milk be frozen for a few weeks before use in the home?

It should be safe to freeze milk, providing you do the following things:

freeze it before the ‘Use by’ date

follow any freezing or thawing instructions on the label

defrost it in the fridge so that it doesn’t get too warm – allow about 24 hours for it to thaw

try to use the milk within a few days of defrosting – it will go off in the same way as ordinary pasteurised milk

When milk is frozen it expands and this can rupture the packaging. Check that the packaging is intact before you defrost it. If it has ruptured it’s better not to use the milk.
Remember, freezing might affect the quality of the milk.

My aunt had 5 kids and used to buy gallons of milk every week at the beginning of the week and freeze some of them. She'd then always have one thawing, while one was being used up. Never seemed to affect the taste or quality or anything.

I remember seeing this TV show on Siberia. In winter, the people there got their milk in big frozen discs.

Yes you can - we freeze some of ours every week. It does take a while to defrost though - pop it in a bowl of COLD water if you want it to defrost a little quicker.

We have semi skimmed (half fat) milk but whole milk freezes just as well. Give it a shake before you use it as some of the sediments will be at the bottom.

i have frozen milk before and the only thing is i thought it did taste a little watered down. It seemed like it took awhile for it to thaw also. But i would probably do it again if i had to.

I will never forget the look on my hubby's face when I pulled a half gallon out of the freezer for the first time.....he absolutely FREAKED!!! YOU CAN'T FREEZE MILK!!! You'd think I'd run over his dog!!!

I told him I grew up on frozen milk!! You haven't lived til you get ice chunks on your Frosted Flakes!!! ;-) Anyway, he STILL hates it, but he doesn't drink milk anyway!!

I do, however, shake it before every use after its thawed. The homogenization can be affected.

Good luck! Kelli

Yup, I've frozen milk before & it was fine
