anyone ever fly on thanksgiving?

We are thinking about flying on thanksgiving from boston or providence to Orlando this year. Anyone ever flown on thanksgiving? Is it cheaper? Less busy? What should I expect? I hoping we will be able to get a great deal due to the holiday! TIA!!!

Traditionally, there are fewer people flying that day than any other day that week. It may cost a bit less as well, but it's unlikely you will get any great bargain on airfare. Thanksgiving week is one of the busiest air travel weeks of the year and with weather problems not uncommon, the flights could be pretty full.

I had to fly from Ft. Lauderdale to Chicago this past November on Thanksgiving day. I had to buy the tickets at the last minute, and they were ridiculously expensive - not sure if that was due to the fact that it was last minute, Thanksgiving, or both. I believe my flight left at like 8:05am or something and when I arrived, it was pretty busy. I would imagine that if you took a later flight - like in the early afternoon or evening - you *might* find it less crowded. But I don't know for sure.

right now I am looking at 288 which isn't too bad but id rather be in the low 200s. Of course the cheaper airlines (ie jetblue ) haven't released tickets that far out. Wondering if I should hold out or pull the trigger? Im ok with a busy airport but I'm not looking to pay over 300 roundtrip!

We flew Los Angeles to Tampa one Thanksgiving. I LOVED it. No traffic to the airport, the airport was empty in the morning, and the flight attendants were just so happy. I'm assuming they were either relieved the day before was over OR they were getting holiday pay.

I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

My family has flown on thanksgiving and it was great just don't expect turkey and dressing. I thought it was slower than normal when we flew to Hawaii on thanksgiving 2012

I"ve flown on Thanksgiving 3 times, the airport was deserted, like maybe 2 planes worth spread out. Even the food courts were closed down except for 1 window.

TSA was so quick that it took longer to put my shoes back on then it did to get them off and screened.

I say hassle free travel beats turkey every time.

We flew to Orlando from BWI (Baltimore) this past Thanksgiving. Originally we were going to fly out the day after Thanksgiving but tickets were about $65/pp cheaper to fly the day of. We had no idea what to expect in terms of the busyness of the airport but we were pleasantly surprised - security was very quick and the airport was pretty empty. We decided if we ever travel again around this time we are definitely flying on Thanksgiving instead of the day/weekend after.

Just a side note. Make sure you have parking reserved at the airport.
Wouldn't want you to get there and have nowhere to park.

We flew Jetblue Bos to Mco on T-day in 2010. As PP's have stated the airport was empty. I did book my flights the day they were released (April maybe?) and got a decent deal and was able to add to travel bank when seats went lower. Not having a traditional dinner was alittle strange (we ate at Chilli's ) but I was over that real quick once I stepped into WDW

I've flown from Boston to Houston on Thanksgiving, and it was a very slow day. (Admittedly, this was 8 years ago.) It was the return that was crazy busy!

yay! Im excited! Im not a big turkey fan( I bring lasagna with me) and thanksgiving seems to just be my family running around to 4 different houses (yep 4 dinners!!) It's no longer an enjoyable holiday! So since we planned on going on November 30th we just decided we need to start our vacation early!!! I cant wait!!!!

This is great to hear! We're flying to Texas on Thanksgiving to spend a couple days with family before boarding a cruise out of Galveston on the 30th. I was hoping T-day would be better than other days that week. After spending all of Thanksgiving in the kitchen last year, I am so looking forward to a restaurant Thanksgiving!

I did it last Tday from Orlando back home and it was cheaper, I think 75 a person cheaper for the one way segment.

I left at 3:45pm from Milw, non-stop to MCO this past T=day.
I priced those flights for A FEW MONTHS and gave up trying to get a deal.
The airport was practically empty, that was nice!!

Yes, we did just this for Thanksgiving. PVD-MCO on Southwest on Thanksgiving day and MCO-PVD the following Tuesday. Paid $125/pp each way the morning flights were released. Never saw them any cheaper after that. Glad we booked right away.

My in-laws do it every year. The airport isn't too crowded and they say it is less stressful.

(It is significantly more stressful for us but that is a separate issue...)
