Anyone ever donate a car to charity?

Wow, what a coincidence! I had never heard of this organization until a few months ago. Our son is getting a degree in Christian counseling and we looked at Rawhide as a possible job opportunity for him at one of their camps.

Check your local womens' shelter, as a pp mentioned, or your dept of social services. As a single Mom driving something with 220,000 miles on it, my biggest stress right now is what's going to happen when it dies. Something like that would be a lifesaver!

Many years ago, we donated a car to Make A Wish. The very next year, DD#3 was born. DD was diagnosed with a very rare genetic disease when she was 7 years old. 17 years after we donated the car, DD was granted a wish trip to Hawaii. It was a trip that wouldn't have been possible without Make A Wish. This past summer, we donated another car to them. It's our way of paying it forward for another special child.

Our most recent car donation was to our local public radio station through the "Car Talks" national program. It is super easy - you do the paperwork online, they come pick up the car and mail you a receipt. That particular car was 20+ years old and had been drive by first a man in his 80s and then by a teen learning to drive. It was beat up - definitely not good condition.

Several years ago, we donated a mini van to our local hospice. It no longer takes car donations.

I used to run a car donation program as part of my job. At that time, it was very advantageous tax wise to donate a car because you got fair market value. Now, you get what the charity gets for the car. Since they are generally sold wholesale, it's usually not a lot of money.
