Anyone else's summer come to a horrible end already?

Schools here don't go back until 8/31 (seems odd to start on a Thursday, but ok). Last day of school will be 6/14, barring snow days.
I don't have kids, but my commute it so much nicer in the summer without all the school traffic.

We call beginning mid-week a "ramp up start" here: 2 or 3 days the first week, then 4 days the second week (because of the Labor Day Holiday on Monday) before moving to a full week. It's supposed to help the littlest kids transition, but not everyone likes it.

My boys went back to school yesterday. I’m a teacher and my first official day back was July 28th. We are on a balanced calendar. So two weeks off in October, Christmas, and March. Then about 8-9 weeks for summer.

I would have loved that schedule!!

Today is back to school for my last child left at home (he will be a senior).

Most schools here start back Aug 28th, but he attends the Early College High School so they follow a different schedule than the rest of the district (Spring Break in March instead of April and finish up in May instead of mid-June).

The HS near me starts back tomorrow...RIP my easy morning commute lol

They are putting in a second roundabout at the highway exit right near the main high school (which is also where my husband typically gets onto the highway to get to work). I think it will be helpful in the long run for commuters to not get stuck with the high school drop off/ dismissal traffic (there is no light so it's almost impossible to turn left), but I have no idea if they are actually going to complete it in time for school to start.

Is their day shorter or do they get more breaks during the year?

More breaks throughout the year. It's roughly 9 weeks in school and 3 weeks out. Our school has 4 tracks (1-4); so only 3/4 of the kids are in school at a given time. My kids are on a track where they are in school all summer except for the week of July 4th. They'll be out the last 2 weeks of Aug and the first week of Sept. I love going to the beach the week of Labor Day as it's much less crowded.

Try dual enrollment--the best of the HS schedule AND the best of the college schedule! Since the breaks don't line up, my kid doesn't actually get a week off--but, he gets 2 weeks where he has less school. On the good side, his finals are also staggered, so there's that. My issue is, he hasn't gotten his driver's license (and it's not looking promising), so guess who gets to pick him up from HS and then drive him to the college. Sigh! One more year...

Nope! DH's family is visiting us this weekend (DMIL, 2 DSILs) starting tomorrow -- trip to Ravinia (outdoor music festival in the Chicagoland area) and DMIL's birthday celebration. I'm knee deep in preparations, in spite of still working through the week.

Then DH and I are going to the UP of Michigan for two weeks - 10 days on Lake Superior, 4 days on Mackinac Island. We get home the day before Labor Day.

THEN summer ends and a series of meetings in downtown Chicago follows.

Enjoy the UP. I'm originally from Detroit and I used to go to Mackinac all the time as a kid. Great fudge and I think they still don't allow cars on the Island.

Yes, definitely why we were glad he got into the Early College (it's located on the community college campus) instead of doing dual enrollment through the main HS. Our middle daughter did dual enrollment, but she decided to homeschool her last 3 years of HS so we could set our own schedule to match the CC classes.

My son only needs Senior English to graduate. I don't know what he plans for next semester. He'll be taking English and AP Chem this fall. He's a planner, so he probably has something in mind--telling ME, well, that's a separate thing. I'm only the chauffer.

School starts Monday. I’m not looking forward to it.

I still haven’t gotten used to the idea of such an early start to the school year. But, as the weather here (Metro Atlanta) is beautiful in May/June and miserable in August, I’d much rather them be on break end of May and sitting inside an air-conditioned building in August. Plus, it gives us a chance to get in an early summer Disney vacation while the crowds are still relatively light before the rest of the country’s schools let out for summer.

My entire summer has been terrible to be honest. Trying to have a fantastic end by leaving for a cruise tomorrow. Hopefully, it will be good weather and pretty fish!

When I first read your title I thought you were going to say you had a storm too.lol
I start back to work next week. The students start the 14th.
I will say, besides the hurt of going back, I have the hurt of having an oak tree take a nap on my car during a super scary storm Sunday night. I was without power for 3 days in the fun Kansas heat and humidity. I am finally in the glorious ac, while others still are without(yes, everyone is reaching out to help everyone).
The heat rash is starting to go away. I fell less icky and crabby. I am getting caught up on things. I was lucky and got a car ordered, and will get it in about 5-6 weeks. I still have lots of work to do though.
This was the worst ending to my summer except for maybe the time a neighbor drove through the bay window the night before school started, again, during the hottest week there was......

Our kids have been out of school since May 20th. School resumes this coming Monday for three of them. Our oldest moves to college in a week. DH and I both work in higher education and don't get summers off, but traffic on campus has been picking up for the last two weeks. I'm ready for fall break and our next vacation.

My DD19 leaves the 16th to go back to college . Her classes start the 21st.

She’s very excited, and even though our house is super boring when she’s gone, I’m excited for her.

This. I have no kids. But I attended a private school that didn't start until the week after Labor Day. All the public schools in my region started before Labor Day. We weren't much for the beach, but my family always LOVED vacationing that last week. So much quieter!

Mackinac Island is on the short list of my favorite places ever. I Live very very far away and have so many places that I still need to get to but Mackinac Island is one that I really hope I make it back to.

One of my many fond memories of childhood is that last class period of that last day of school. He had these big clocks that were probably 14 or 15 inches in diameter with a red second hand. We all knew exactly what time the bell would ring down the second for every class, and everyone would count down the last 10 seconds of the last class of the year and cheer when that last bell rang. The last day was usually a Friday. I remember waking up that first Monday after we were out and how good it felt to roll over and go back to sleep. Fun times.

Arizona here. My kids started back at school this past week. It's been 110 or higher all week. It's fine. Just go from 1 air conditioned space to another. No reason to postpone the school year for that.
