Anyone else upset about gov't response

Somehow thousands of people got to the New Orleans Convention Center...somehow TV crews have gotten to them....look on a map and drop in bottled water by parachute!

The reported who taped the people at the Covention Center said these people are NOT turning it into a melee. They are NOT hostile, they are DESPERATE.

They tried... and apparently succeded.
A military heliocpter tried to land at the convention center several times to drop off food and water. But the rushing crowd forced the choppers to back off. Troopers then tossed the supplies to the crowd from 10 feet off the ground and flew away.

Geoff,
My understanding is that the people who were directed to go the "shelters" - Superdome and City Hall (not sure correct name) had no supplies/food/water. I know they began evacuating the Superdome yesterday and today had problems because of some troublemakers and I think things are on the move again. This is good, now.

From what I've seen on tv this afternoon, the people in the City Hall (??) shelter were basically forgotten about until today. No one realized that about 15,000 people were there. My understanding is that they had no food and people were dying, the elderly and the very young.

You seem to be educated on this situation and I appreciate your sharing any information you have.

MJTM610, it is only day 4. Bring your own aspirin along with your water when you evacuate. People cannot expect the FED, State, and Local governments to do it all. They were told to GET OUT. Many, many people ignore the warnings, they raise **** when everything goes wrong. They're saying "two days, no food" they were told to bring food. My God, bring pop tarts and granola bars if nothing else. This is not impossible to do, even if you're poverty stricken. This situation is miserable for everyone who has ever been through a hurricane. It's hot. I don't know about where you are, but it has been well over 100 degrees down here for weeks. We're all hot rich or poor, young or old, it's miserable. Unless you've ever been down here in the summer time, you cannot imagine how hot it can get, then add to that rain and the general, everyday humidity. It's like an oven. Yes, we're all miserable. When it rains, sometimes the sewage backs up. You have no idea how much it rains down here. We've had more than 100 inches of rain this year NOT COUNTING HURRICANE Katrina. But when the power goes out, we don't turn on each other and shoot and riot and loot. We do the best we can. That's life when you live down here, or along the Atlantic coast. Hello?!?!?!? You get DAYS of warning to get ready, even though we may not know exactly where it may hit. They were told two days ahead of time it was moving their way. It got all of us. It was this bad during Camille, Frederick, and who knows how many other storms between then and now. It stinks for weeks, months, and years. It's going to be like this for a long, long time.

Ok, well on TV they have been showing images of MASSIVE crowds shouting "HELP HELP HELP." Somehow the media crews are getting in to shoot this...if they can get in, trucks with food and water should be able to get in!

You say they can't drop water all over the city....we're not talking all over the city. We are talking about the few areas where people are massively congregating. They showed images of them dropping water from a helicopter...so apparently it is possible.

Starting with the Civic Center and Superdome areas .

Read my post on TONY ZUMBADO. He is at the CONVENTION CENTER IN NEW ORLEANS.

NOT THE SUPERDOME!

THEY FORGOT ABOUT THE PEOPLE AT THE CONVENTION CENTER.

The photo I posted on the 1st page of this thread seems to contadict the report that there was no food at the Super Dome today. As for the Convention Center, people were told to go there as a evacuation staging area... and the military did succeed, after a lot of difficultly with the crowd, in dropping water and food there.

Well all I know is that I just saw a report by Tony Zumbado and he said they were not hostile and they had nothing and were forgotten.

They were not forgotten.

Ok let me rephrase. They were only forgotten for 3 days...

Tony must have reported before they dropped some water and food.

No, the crowds didn't show up there en masse until after the total evacuation order was given and people were told by word of mouth that the convention center was a departure point.

Look, this isn't some sporting even crowd this is people who have had no food or water for days. They are wandering around not knowing where to go, they were told it is a depature point so I am sure they were shocked to get there and see that NOTHING was there...

If they were told it was a depature point, couldn't they have been dropping food and ater there from the time they said it was a departure point?

You're assuming that the people planning the evacuation are the same ones that are controlling the food distribution. I'd guess not... the Fox story hints that the Mayor's office was in charge of the evacuees and the military was obviously handling the water/food. I'd speculate that there was a miscommunication that was corrected. One that shouldn't have taken place, if that's the case. But even so, this doesn't prove the notion that there's "no" or "little" food and water in NO. The problem appears to be the realization that it was needed at the location... and getting it to that particular spot. It wasn't that there wasn't any on hand to give out.

Free4life, what do you think should be THERE waiting on them when they arrive? We all know this drill. Like I said before, we rehearse it several times a year. For goodness sake, wouldn't you think to bring your supplies when you go on vacation? Why should you prepare for a natural disaster --and I remind you--we do have plenty of time to prepare--and bring NOTHING but the clothes on your back. This is not a tornado we're talking about. This just doesn't drop down out of the sky with no warning. You can't do nothing for yourself then act surprised when nobody can help you. The relief efforts are on the way, if not already there. No one has been forgotten or abandoned. It unfortunatly is not an instantaneous process. It takes time to set up, to get things going. You just don't understand the logistics of the situation.

Forget it. I obviously don't know the logistics so I give up.
No, your sentiments are understandable. You're setting at home watching all of this on TV and reading about it on the Internet. You've never been through the aftermath of a hurricane before (me neither). From our vantage point, it all looks "simple". Just get a 'copter, scoop some water, and go drop it.

But on the ground, with different agencies handling different parts of the effort, with the realities of working in a severly flooded NO, with police and city radios that no longer work, with cell phones out, with TV and radio off the air... and nobody with any power to receive the signals anyway, then things aren't necessarily work the way our minds tell us they should.

Extremely UPSET! This is America, this is our country, the government needs to help us now and not everyone else.

Every morning when I wake up I have to remind myself this was not just a nightmare. Its hard to believe this is happening in America. I can't remember ever feeling so disillusioned, I can only imagine what those poor refugees are thinking. :(

Anyone wondering where the other countries are and why they aren't jumping in to help the way we always seem to send help???

Apparently help had been offered to the US by more than 20 countries including poverty stricken Honduras. However a lot of assistance has been turned down! :confused3

I heard the same thing too and I don't get it...
