Anyone else think that....

... when you heard about the anesthesia Michael Jackson had - Propofol - it sounded great? I mean, in the correct setting - you lie down, once it is administered you are asleep instantly, then awake instantly when the IV is removed. Surely I'm not the only one who thought it sounded refreshing - with the proper administration!

Anesthesia......not the same as normal sleep. Your brain doesn't go through the normal cycles. Therefore, I don't see how you could wake up refreshed. I've never felt rested after being put under.

No, not at all. I hate being put to sleep. I wake up all weepy and icky feeling. Not like a refreshing night's sleep at all.

I read that this was different than the normal general anesthesia - that you do wake up refreshed.

i'd have to see the sleep patterns of someone taking it while on an eeg, but i really don't think that it adequately provides you with all the necessary sleep time. you're not built to fall asleep instantly. you skip two whole stages doing that, and thats not really safe or healthy.

Ummm, no. It's not a "sleep" drug. It's completely different than sleeping. I love sleeping, but part of what I love is when I'm in that restful, comfortable, almost asleep mode.

If you are having a hard time sleeping, stay up until you feel tired. Then go to bed. Years ago I used to go to bed at 10:00pm, but tossed and turned until around 11:30ish. Now, I just stay up until 11:30ish which is when I start to feel tired. I go to bed and fall asleep in a few minutes, plus I get a lot done staying up that I wouldn't get done if I was in bed tossing & turning.

First off I have to say that I don't use drugs. When I had my mastectomy in Sept of 2004 I was given 30 Percocets to use for pain. I still have 15 of them and with the fibromyalgia there are times when I do use one to help me relieve some pain and get some sleep.
I also have sleep apnea and I have never gotten a good nights sleep, I wake at least 5 times a night and never feel rested when I wake. I need a nap around noon time just to get me through the rest of the night until bedtime at around 10-11.
I love when I have surgery because I do sleep. I sleep deeply but also feel groggy after I wake. But when the anesthesia wears off I feel refreshed. Maybe it is because they have cut open my body and I am still alive, but I do feel I get rest when I am put under for anesthesia.
I just had some surgery last Friday and I had trouble sleeping in the hospital that night because I had slept so well during the surgery that morning and in my room in the afternoon.
So, if it was administered and I was closely observed, I might go for a good nights sleep once in a while. The main problem with MJ is that the DR administered it then fell asleep, waking to find MJ dead and it was too late for resusitation.

Sorry to go off topic but you might want to look at getting a new prescription. Taking a drug that was prescribed 5 years ago probably isn't the best idea. With your pain and obvious lack of addiction, I am sure the doctor wouldn't mind prescribing a few fresh ones for you.

I'm with you on feeling very refreshed after the anesthetic wears off. I feel like I have had the greatest sleep. I wonder why others don't feel that way? I guess everyone reacts differently.

This is what they gave my DD when she had her MRI. It was SO scary!! I was holding her in my arms and one second she was screaming and the next poof she was OUT.

She was groggy when she woke up and combative. I guess she comes out anethesia the same way I do. When I had surgery as a teen I actually slugged the nurse (so Im told) then went right back under.

I wouldnt want to do it.

we use at it work on the animals before surgery and I just cant imagine anyone giving it to the animals much less a human and not keeping an eye on them . :scared1:

I had 9 hours of surgery last year and I DID NOT feel refreshed after I woke up

I just had general anesthesia 2 weeks ago for an MRI myself (many issues led to this!). When I woke up it was odd, normally I am awake and can get right up. With this I had to struggle to open my eyes and then to just focus (besides the fact I did not have my glasses). The nurse kept talking to me and I tried to answer her, but I know I probably gave some strange answers!

I just wanted to say that if this is what MJ experienced, I could not tolerate it on a daily basis. It was an awful feeling. I know sleep deprivation must be horrible, just hard to see how this would help.

Well i'm studying to be a respiratory therapist, and in Quebec we're also the equivalent of a nurse anesthesist (i don't know the exact term i'm sorry ^^') so I do know what propofol is and seen it used countless times. And I must say that when I heard that Michael jackson was using this to sleep at night (or whenever he wanted to) I was stunned.

First because this medication is REALLY strong, put someone asleep in about 10 seconds or less, and can have some side-effects. It's not for nothing that only anesthesiologist use this for surgery! (also for some Intensive care patients but that's another story and even then, the nurse aren't far from the patient)

So would I take this medication in a surgery room for a surgery administred by an anesthesist and a nurse looking at my vital signs and at me? Yes wihout any problem.

Would I take this madication alone in my house, with a doctor (or someone) just coming to start and stop the medication? NEVER!

Plus, this medication is meant to induct artificial sleep for the surgery. Not to sleep at night like a sedative you'd get in a local drug store.

I've been put under many times for tests and surgeries, and I have to say, it's THE best sleep I've ever had. No, I would never, ever do it at home, ever.
I don't get quality sleep... I have some medical problems that prevent me from getting a good, sound sleep. And when I am sleeping, I am always dreaming, it seems. I dream and dream, and I feel exhaused when I wake up. The times I was put under, it was like I was in a coma....fell asleep instantly, no dreams at all, woke up feeling a little groggy and confused at first, but then, very refreshed! I always tell my DH afterward that I would love to sleep like that every night. Who wouldn't? (unless your experience wasn't good, of course). I'm just surprised that anyone can even have this done in their own home, but I guess if you are extremely famous and very wealthy, you can buy just about anything. I would never feel safe not being in a hospital setting, being watched the entire time---like how it's suppose to be done. When I read about all the drugs that he was given (and the high doses!!) before he was given the propofol, I was shocked that he still wasn't asleep. The guy on CNN said it was enough to put an elephant to sleep! MJ must have built up quite the tolorance to sleep med's.

Anesthesia is a drug induced coma, not normal sleep. There are very important reasons our brains need the five cycles, we experience.(while sleeping).

Sleep affects our daily functioning and our physical and mental health in many ways that we are just beginning to understand.

Nerve-signaling chemicals called neurotransmitters control whether we are asleep or awake by acting on different groups of nerve cells, or neurons, in the brain. Neurons in the brainstem, which connects the brain with the spinal cord, produce neurotransmitters such as serotonin and norepinephrine that keep some parts of the brain active while we are awake. Other neurons at the base of the brain begin signaling when we fall asleep. These neurons appear to “switch off” the signals that keep us awake. Research also suggests that a chemical called adenosine builds up in our blood while we are awake and causes drowsiness. This chemical gradually breaks down while we sleep.

People who are under anesthesia or in a coma are often said to be asleep. However, people in these conditions cannot be awakened and do not produce the complex, active brain wave patterns seen in normal sleep. Instead, their brain waves are very slow and weak, sometimes all but undetectable.

I doesn't always work that way. My mother was sedated with propofol last month and it took her days to wake up.
