Anyone else think Disney is getting Greedy?

Well for one it's not really "free". You will pay RACK RATE at the hotel. Personally I like getting the annual pass, the discounted resort and the Tables In Wonderland 20 percent discount which includes Table Service food and drink. It's a much better deal. There is no such thing as "free dining" at Disney.
I priced rooms with the free dining just yesterday and the prices that came up blow my mind. Like you said free dining isn't so free after all.

Hi Planogirl!:wave2:

I too priced out the Free dining for October. Two nights at the Wilderness Lodge (Conceirge) 2 tickets per adult (2 adults total), free dining COST.............

$2900!!!:scared1:

Yea disgusting. Unfortunately, there are always going to be people like that no matter what the situation is. And they will ruin it for everyone else.

Hi! You are so right!!! I just read on the "No more Crab legs at Cape May" thread on the Restaurant board, that people have witnessed numerous people like that! They hoard the crab legs! Yes, CinqueTerre you are correct, these types will ruin it for everyone! UGH! I was so mad when I saw that. I just couldn't believe it. He was just so obnoxious too! But you are correct.

Just curious but why wouldn't free dining work for your family? Don't like free food?

the dining plan period doesn't work for a lot of people because they don't normally eat that much food or eat that often. or don't noramlly eat dessert. we have purchased it a few times, but only when doing a split stay so we don't have to have it for our entire stay. even then we stretch it out a bit (save a TS credit for dinner the 1st night at the 2nd resort, use a few snack credits for
"savable" thingsfor the 2nd stay.. use Cs credits at the new resort for something svable (sandwich, etc) "to go" and put it in the fridge for the next day.
one trip we purchased the quick service plan. we figured since we were at CSR pepper market would make it worth it. Disney kickked our butts on that one. we ended up with 4 unused CS credits!
ANYWAY, I love the "free" dining because I am a server and I love to be waited on and I love fine dining. (hubby not so much;)) and I can order whatever expensive thing I want. .. . however

I put "free" in quotes because you are paying rack rate for the room, which can be verypricey. we had a nice bounceback for POR. I gave up both the bounceback rate AND the resort for "free" dining at CBR. If you don't usually eat that often or that much (I never finish that HUGE soda they give you at CS places, we never get desserts at CS places.

we don't "make out" as it is just the 2 of us.. (wait a minute, that didn't sound right! :rotfl:) "free" dining is a better deal for families. but I like it anyway.

another reason , besides the extra cost for the room and you don't eat that way usually is the extra planning involved. and the schedule hinderances. esp now with the FP plus. you are just too scheduled!!! no spontaneity.

when we go with a room only reservation, we usually schedule only a few TS meals, like maybe 3 over 10 days.(I tell hubby, "I'm still getting the steak!!!;))
oh! another reason. many people are annual passholders. so now we have 2 day tickets we don't need.

last year, we we put them aside, and brought them back this year to upgrade to our new APs. this time, I am scared to death they will "use" them ON our magic bands instead of the annual passes. I know I have to change the "priority of the tickets. still makes me nervous. but some people maight not be sure they are doming back the next year.

oh! another reason. some people are DVC member.. they want to stay on points, which they have already paid for.

so, that is why the "free" dining might not wark for some families. it's not that they don't like free food.

Went to Cape May once because they had the crab legs. There was one patron or shall I say (*& and his wife that had 5 let me repeat 5 pails of CRAB LEGS on his TABLE! He was disgusting! Then before he finished eating them he got up and got more. It became so bad that I complained about it. I have never in my life seen anything like it! Total disregard for manners and was a total P*G!

That was pretty much my experience too. I never did get a crab leg, people would swarm the buffet line when they were brought out. It was disgusting. If that is the reason for Disney not having them anymore, I don't blame them.

It's not a matter of want, it's a matter of ability to buy it. I'm paying $12K already for our WDW vacation. Now I'm supposed to justify another $400 for our party to be part of the privileged?

Usually I try to wait until I get through the entire 15 pages before I post but I couldn't. If you are spending $12k on a Disney vacation then are ARE part of the privileged.

We are staying 8 nights at CBR, have deluxe dining and paid full price for our flights (no points) and we are only at $6k. You are privileged, you just may have chosen to justify staying at a deluxe or to stay 2 weeks instead of one or you bought the platinum plan instead.

13% of households in the US live on $14k per year or less.

Before judging me, you should probably read the rest of the thread, ok.

We are a family of six and flight included are spending 10k on our trip. It is the result of about three years of squirreling away money here and there. We live in a modest ranch house and one of our two cars is an '03 venture. While we are not living in poverty, we are not privileged... although others might think we are, they have not seen what my wife and I have done over the course of a lifetime to have arrived at the point we are at.

If one can spend 14k on a trip without blinking, then they might be privileged (or lucky, or reaping the rewards of their hard work). But many who go to Disney and SPEND do so with care and effort, and not riding their silver spoons.

Walt Disney wanted a place with something for everyone. So I don't really have a problem with DW offering big ticket items or with the people the decide to purchase them. However, it is my hope that they also continue to make it a place that everyone has the opportunity to afford and experience.

For me there's a difference between what I can afford and what I'm willing to pay. My family of 4 is going for 8 nights in August. I figure without any discounts our vacation would be around $8k. There are people who would pay that, but we just won't. Could but won't. So I've saved up points on our disney and SW visas (getting most as a sign up bonus), bought tickets at UT and rented DVC points. Our vacation is now more like $3-3.5k. My kids are older now, so I'm not sure when we'll be back.

With that being said, have a friend who used to be a TA. She knew people who would save for years and years for their dream vacation. If that's what they wanted, saved up for and paid, how can we judge that? And if Disney knows that's what people are willing to pay, well..

I already have an annual pass, DVC and a Tables in Wonderland so the free dining isn't exactly free and if I get it (and buy the tickets and pay for a room I wouldn't have ordinarily paid for just to get it) then I'd have to be on the dining plan. And I hate the dining plan.

One of the reasons I will not eat Buffets. Classless peoples who grab plate fulls of the expensive items leaving nothing for other patrons who paid just as much as them. Nice mix of gluttony and greed.

Hi Maxiesmom!

Yes, it very well could be. It was like a "hoarding" of crab legs!? They must not get out much!

No kidding! Don't people have Red Lobsters in their home cities, if they feel the need for some crab legs????:p

Ok, this reminds me of a funny story (at least too me)...

I grew up in Ohio and then moved to FL after school. When my friends would come to visit I would ask them if they wanted to go to a seafood restaurant (you know, as in fresh seafood!) and they say, "yeah, let's go to Red Lobster!".

Uh...never mind!

OK, sorry for the thread jack!
