Just curious but why wouldn't free dining work for your family? Don't like free food?
the dining plan period doesn't work for a lot of people because they don't normally eat that much food or eat that often. or don't noramlly eat dessert. we have purchased it a few times, but only when doing a split stay so we don't have to have it for our entire stay. even then we stretch it out a bit (save a TS credit for dinner the 1st night at the 2nd resort, use a few snack credits for
"savable" thingsfor the 2nd stay.. use Cs credits at the new resort for something svable (sandwich, etc) "to go" and put it in the fridge for the next day.
one trip we purchased the quick service plan. we figured since we were at CSR pepper market would make it worth it. Disney kickked our butts on that one. we ended up with 4 unused CS credits!
ANYWAY, I love the "free" dining because I am a server and I love to be waited on and I love fine dining. (hubby not so much

) and I can order whatever expensive thing I want. .. . however
I put "free" in quotes because you are paying rack rate for the room, which can be verypricey. we had a nice bounceback for POR. I gave up both the bounceback rate AND the resort for "free" dining at CBR. If you don't usually eat that often or that much (I never finish that HUGE soda they give you at CS places, we never get desserts at CS places.
we don't "make out" as it is just the 2 of us.. (wait a minute, that didn't sound right!

) "free" dining is a better deal for families. but I like it anyway.
another reason , besides the extra cost for the room and you don't eat that way usually is the extra planning involved. and the schedule hinderances. esp now with the FP plus. you are just too scheduled!!! no spontaneity.
when we go with a room only reservation, we usually schedule only a few TS meals, like maybe 3 over 10 days.(I tell hubby, "I'm still getting the steak!!!

)
oh! another reason. many people are annual passholders. so now we have 2 day tickets we don't need.
last year, we we put them aside, and brought them back this year to upgrade to our new APs. this time, I am scared to death they will "use" them ON our magic bands instead of the annual passes. I know I have to change the "priority of the tickets. still makes me nervous. but some people maight not be sure they are doming back the next year.
oh! another reason. some people are DVC member.. they want to stay on points, which they have already paid for.
so, that is why the "free" dining might not wark for some families. it's not that they don't like free food.
