At first I was cynical of Disney’s motive, and no doubt self-interest is likely a part of the calculus here - they are a for profit / non-governmental entity after all. Disney also has the opportunity to be an ambassador of inclusivity in a part of the world otherwise not widely exposed to this messaging in this type of way.
I acknowledge that I may be giving too much credit to Disney in regard to their intentionality. The opportunity, in my opinion, remains the same regardless.
At the same time, I am reminded to be “in the world and not of it”. Strong arguments could be made about how far the latter of that advice should extend in this circumstance, but shutting myself off completely from parts of the world with known abuses feels like a selective preference (to me) and not a true consideration of an opportunity to spread a message (intentionally or otherwise) to new frontiers.
