Anyone else really afraid to fly?

Is a tranquilizer the same thing and like ativan or xanax? Because the one I took before did not have a steady effect. If we fly next year I'm gonna need to know what to ask for. :rotfl:

NO. Xanax is an anti-anxiety drug not a tranq. When you take it (as directed and in the lowest dose tolerable) it should simply make you even-keeled. That is to say you simply won't give a darn about anything. Not excited/happy/scared/anxious...just, well, even. That said I have taken it in higher doses as prescribed for sleep issues (I wake up in the middle of the night with a full on panic/anxiety attack so I take it then to pull out of it or if I've had several bad nights in a row I will take it before bed to prevent the attack and to go to sleep...usually for that a .5mg dose. For flying I take a .25 dose).

I took Xanax on every flight I've done since 2001 (about 1 per year) and it's great. I usually take it as soon as I get to the gate at the terminal, or about 1/2 hour prior to the flight. Did great from NC to LAX and then LAX to Shanghai and then last year NC to Baltimore and then Baltimore to Shannon, Ireland and then from Shannon to Greece.

We live close together! I'm in Mooresville!
What are some tranquilizers? I think the last time my dr gave me something like xanax. Did NOT work like it was supposed to.

I smell a DIS meet! Anyhoo...how about Valium? Xanax IS a "benzo" (the type of drugs that are sedatives) but generally the dosing isn't used that way. Did it make you sleepy? Or did it do nothing? If it did nothing you may need a higher dose, or vice versa if you were too sleepy. I find when I take the .5mg dose for my sleep anxiety I am VERY groggy in the morning. If I take it while I am awake and planning to stay awake (such as for a flight) at the .25 dose it just makes me "not worry".

You could go with an OTC drug like a sleep aid or plain old Benadryl?

Okay...you're worrying about things that will probably never happen. Flying is much safer than driving. Things don't often go wrong in the air. The thing is that the few times that something does 'go wrong' it's ever so much more dramatic than a car wreck!!
But, sit and think about how many 'incidents' there have been. No, not that many. Think of how many planes are in the air, every day, flying safely around the world. Think of all those pilots, co-pilots and flight attendants...do you think, for a minute, that they would be doing this job if it were unsafe???
Flying is really just a bus in the air, as someone else mentioned.

Head over to the fear of flying site...it's a very good one. It gives you info on what to expect for various parts of the flight...especially take-off and landing.
Do NOT sit by the window. I remember sitting by the window, many years ago, and looked out at just the 'wrong' time during take-off. We started banking to the left, the side I was on...Oh dear God!!! I thought we were going down!! Now I tend to think of it as an amusement park ride.
If you know what to expect, you will be fine. Stop finding reasons to not fly....get some info, and book that first flight. You can do it!!!!:woohoo:

Where is the fear of flying site?

I would love a DIS meet!!
I tried the med about a week before the flight to get an idea of what it did to me. That time, it made me dizzy and all I wanted to do was laugh.

The second time I took it, I took it too soon ad it made me sleepy. Then the last time I took it I was out for almost 24 hours.

Sleep aids don't always work the same amount of time when I take them. Sometimes they take 30 minutes....other times they take hours. I can't take Benadryl because I'm allergic to it :sad2:

Hmmmm...have you tried a lower dose (do you remember which dose you were on?)? Sometimes even half of a .25 pill will do (though laughing dizziness beats abject terror eh?) :lmao:

It's been so long I don't remember the dose and I can't even remember what it was she gave me. :confused3

:lmao: I'd go to your doc next time you have a flight planned and ask her for something. Tell her what she gave you last time (will be noted in your chart) didn't work and tell her what it did to you. Then she can try fine tuning the dosage or prescribing a different med. Xanax, Ativan, and Valium are the usual go-to drugs for this type of anxiety.

For some reason I was thinking it began with a C. I don't know though...it may have been a generic?

Im sorry, I don't know - everything has different names in England. I usually have Valium, a really tiny dose. It just keeps me that bit more relaxed. I've found it makes a difference but that may be just because I'm expecting to feel better and my brain tricks me :rotfl:

Where were you? We had two already since last Summer. Well, more like 1 and a half...the second one kind of fell apart at the last minute. If you would like to have one post on the Meet Board and see if you get some responses.:)

I didn't know!!! Where were they at? And where were they posted? I've never really visited the meet up board. I guess I should... hahahaha

The first one was at the Disney Store at the Crabtree Valley Mall on Glenwood in Raleigh. This one went well.

The second was at the SouthPoint Mall in Durham. This one fell apart.

What happened to the second one?

Just a freaky turn of events. The person that organized it was called away at the last minute because of work. That, I guess, took the wind out of the sails, so to speak. Only two of us showed up...the two best ones, of course, but still.:rotfl:

Y'all will have to do one a bit closer to us West-of-Winston folks.
