Anyone else noticing a change in the way teens are dressing lately?

As a 29 year old who looks young and dresses casual, I am very happy with the way the trends have been turning.

Me too! I love the long tanks, and camis that are coming in. I love the lace on the bottom of the tanks for the 'sexy' look. It goes to show you can be sexy without showing skin. Now if the rise of the jeans would come up above my thong I'll be a happy camper!

I, too, love the styles that are out this season; however I hate preppy look (for me) and really hope it does not come back in fashion. The look is fine for some people but it is definitely not 'me'. I prefer more feminine, frilly, sexy clothes and think they are much more flattering.

Yes! I noticed. My 18 year old DD just paid $50.00 for a long sleeve white Polo oxford!! IZOD is also making a huge comeback.
I'm loving it. I hate that lingerie look that Madonna started.

I've noticed it in the teen mags too. Long live the Preppy look.

"Popped" collars are so 2005...

heheh

seriously - Abercrombie has already made a humor tee about it...last year "Put your collar down"...when A&F pokes fun at it - you know it's a over and done with thing.

IZOD made a huge comeback with huge prices! I almost choked when my DD told me what she paid for her polo's. I knew I should have saved all mine. ;)

Ha! I wish!! It's seems that the young girls in this area are going for the skanky look, and the guys are all dressed "hood-like" (my word). It's sad, actually.

You know what, I'm glad it's not just me who's been noticing a change in the way the kids are dressing. My DS who is turning 15 soon and refused to wear anything that referenced a brand name, asked me to take him to the mall (that is a first in itself) so he could buy some shirts at Hollister and American Eagle. Polo's are everywhere and even the sales personnel were sporting the popped collars.

At least I got this far in life before he cost me too much in fashion $$!

My niece will be happy if these styles are appearing in more stores. She has never liked the short/tight/"show off what you haven't got" styles of the past couple of years. She's 12 now and was dreading moving back to the U.S. because that's all she was seeing and she didn't think she'd ever find clothes that she liked. My sister couldn't order her anything online and she hated it when her aunts would send her clothes. Maybe now she'll have more options.
My DD is the same, she hates the "Skanky" look, and buys the longer shorts and t-shirts, its been very difficult to find appropriate clothes for her.

That's a teeny problem, but I found ones that work better with my low rise. Also with the long shirts, I don't usually have to worry about undies showing. I admit I love the really low rise jeans... they just fit me well. I just wanted the long shirts to go with ;)

Glad that A&F put out that shirt aobut the popped collars. I was really getting tired of them, so I hope that look fades. But as I said, it wasn't near as bad as it was when I first saw the popped collar when I was younger. I admit I kind of avoid A&F for the most part, but I like the idea of that shirt :teeth:

I do not have the body for low rise jeans. Not even in my size. I wear original Gap bootcut size 10. I want to branch out and buy other jeans, but they all make me muffin-top because of how low they are.

Granted I am a smaller size than you (I'd guess on average a 2 or so), but I had the hardest time finding jeans that worked. I eventually wound up going to Old Navy and got their low cut bootcut stretch. I am a curvy lady, and I was having tons of trouble with the "gap in the back". When my 4s at Old Navy got too big, I went to try the next size down and low and behold, muffin top  Somewhere between a 2 & 4 they decided women had no hips. I swear, I had real issues with that everywhere I go! I eventually wound up buying Lucky brand jeans. I wear the Dream style but it is a size 6  I don't mind it quite so much since they don't "vanity size" like a lot of places do, but they do fit me well! It was a shock though to have to go up a size instead of down even though my 4s were too big. The lady there convinced me they just ran smaller than most everywhere else and so I felt okay ;)

when I was in my double digits for jeans (I lost about 70 pounds in the last year or so) I did well with the boyfriend bootcut style that Tommy Hilfiger has. Pretty much any other brand made me look muffin like and had major gaps in the back. A lot of the low cut jeans are cut for straight shaped people, so I've been through a lot of brands to see which works for "real shaped women" ;)

Oh and I admit, to help me lose the weight, I got a belly button ring, so I need a lower rise now that doesn't cut into the ring :p That's why they are more comfy for me and why I had to seek them out!

Any word on the destroyed jeans? Are these going away for good yet?
Still VERY big here in FL.

The polos (with or without a cami showing underneath) have been working their way in over the last year and I'm thrilled!

Actually, IZOD doesn't cost as much as LaCoste. Back in the 80s (& before) it was all the same but I believe they split and an alligator shirt now (which is the LaCoste) si the expensive brand compared to IZOD.

From the Izod website:
Phillips-Van Heusen acquired IZOD in 1995 to further strengthen their family of brands. The IZOD division is organized by distribution channel. IZOD Wholesale is responsible for manufacturing and selling IZOD branded apparel to department stores. IZOD Retail places IZOD branded apparel in the IZOD factory outlet stores. Both channels of distribution work together to maintain and exceed the high standards inherent in the IZOD brand. Vin, having recently started a mens apparel business, knew he needed a strong name to associate with his quality merchandise. Jack, as fate would have it, was an elderly tailor looking to retire. Vin extended a generous offer to Jack for the exclusive right to use the name IZOD. Jack accepted.

It wasn't long before IZOD became associated with quality knit sport shirts. In 1951 legendary tennis player Rene' Lacoste partnered with the David Crystal Co. To market a tennis shirt made of a new pique knit. IZOD's popularity soared as an increasing number of celebrities and sportsmen were seen wearing IZOD shirts.

I LOVE PINK AND GREEN!

I love the preppy look. I bought some plaid bermudas for my son the other day and he wore them with a polo to school. Some kid teased him about wearing his "boxers" to school. I think my DS was a little self-conscious until he saw this cool-looking kid at the mall wearing some. Now, he thinks he's hot stuff, lol.

Can i ask a question about the long tanks...the ones I've tried on were so long they hung down at least 6-8 inches over my jeans...which is okay, but they're so tight (stretchy, ribbed or elasticy material) it kind of has the same effect as pulling your socks up over the hem of your jeans...it all just looks bulky and sticky-outy and not attractive...how do i make that look work?

Yes, clothing styles are definately more conservative. I worked in our local high school the beginning of this year, and I was somewhat shocked at how conservative most teens dressed. Lots of polos, with fitted jeans, flip-flops, cute bags, lots of shirt layering, nothing really offensive. But, I am sure in the next couple of years we will go back to shrunken clothes again. :rotfl2:

Alabama style tends to run a little behind most states. My 15 year old still likes tight fitting t's, tight-ish pants, she also loves cute belts, flip flops, and cute bags. I will be glad when knee lengh skirts and polo shirts become popular around here. Crossing my fingers, hoping it will be soon.

I don't know where you live, but the larger cities in AL trend just like any other large city. We're in the suburbs of B'ham, and DD and her friends have been into the polos and more conservative clothing since this school year started.

Belts :) seriously a low hung belt helps to "disguise" all that bulky look. But honestly that is why I like low cut jeans. When they sit at my hip, they seem less bulky and sticking out. My higher cut jeans aren't good for tighter fitting, hip length shirts.
