Anyone else leave their church after it became "Purpose Driven" (copyright)?

I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't like all of the contemporary Christian music out there. I like some of it, but just spent a week with family who ONLY listen to Christian music. One of the artists they raved about sounded like Brittany Spears with different words (not a compliment!) IMO.

For those who are confused about Jesus is my boyfriend songs. That is any lovesong where the name Jesus could be substituted with the name of your current boyfriend and still make sense. Example - "Jesus, I love you. When I'm wrapped in your love I feel warm." (I made that up but you get the point!)

Did anyone happen to watch the episode of Southpark where Cartman recorded an album of religious songs that were simply love songs with Jesus' name substituted for whatever person the song was originally about?

That's what they're doing? I really didn't know that! Somebody who likes this please explain it to me......how are you not putting sexuality in there?

Oooooohhhh let's not go down that Southpark road! I really don't want anyone to think I'm making fun of their faith. I just don't understand this particular trend.

Our church is a mixture of contempary and traditional. The early service (fewer people) is stricly traditional. They do some of the contempary songs during later service but they also do the traditional songs. The message is the same at both though. Our church is very laid back- our minister doesn't wear a robe or even a tie every week. He told us he wants to be approachable to the younger kids. At Christmas and Easter he will wear a white/offwhite robe and at funerals a black one.

The I guess I shouldn't mention the movie Dogma either.

You'll have to forgive me. I'm a rotten preacher's kid and poking fun at people's religious beliefs is second nature to me.

I'm So Baptist and we use both contemporary and old hymns. Preaching is Bible based and normally focuses on a few verses at a time. Lots of visuals. Btw Yes Lord Yes Lord Yes yes Lord is one of my favorite worship songs but too much of it can be aggravating. But if I have to interpret "I lift mine Ebeneezer" I may scream. Ouch what exactly does that mean? I am one of 2 sign language interpreters at our church.

BTW - The term for the 21st century is "Theological Offspring" or TO. "PK" is so 20th century.

I'm Roman Catholic and the worship hasn't changed much in my memory. I know there was a \\change when Vatican II happened, but I was a child then, and don't remember much about church before Vatican II, so I've grown up post Vatican II pretty much.

We sing traditional church songs, do the Mass pretty traditionally etc.

I wouldn't get too much out of a "Purpose Driven" religion personally. I prefer something more traditional. Not a slam on "Purpose Driven" religion...just wouldn't fit my belief system.

I do now that if I felt my religion was no longer bringing me the comfort, supoort etc that I needed, I'd try to find a church that "fit" better.

Oh, I love South Park! I don't believe I just said that but it's true!!!! And I loved Dogma -- and I'm Catholic, so I guess I'm allowed. I just thought a Cartman Jesus songfest might be taking things a little far; don't you think?

It's meant to be about Fatherly love....but I prefer more traditional music too, like with a choir and orchestra instead of a band. I'm a TO too, btw !

Very funny! There are several songs that make me feel sorry for the interpreters!

I agree with DCluvinit, God is my Father and I love him, but I'm uncomfortable saying I'm "in love" with him.

We have the makings of a PK club on this thread (or should I say TO club?)! My father and FIL are BOTH pastors of conservative Baptist churches, definitely not "purpose driven" churches! Do my kids have a chance with their family tree?!?!?

Never heard of it.

I'm Catholic and go to church with my Mom. She was in tears one day during Mass. I asked her later what was wrong - she said that the song the choir was singing was one she remembered from years ago - she can still hear my Pop singing it (& he's been gone for over 20 years!) I'd still like to find a Latin Mass for her - just for "old time's sake"!
