Anyone else keeping updated on the bird flu?

You can't let things like this keep you up at night, but I like to stay informed.

Sure do! It's kind of scary. DH was recently in Southeat Asia, got some flu type thing, then went to Australia. Well, they weren't sure they were going to let him in to Australia! We try to keep up on some of the illnesses from other countries since DH travels internationally on business. It's frightening, sometimes, to realize what's out there.

it's not something that keeps me up at night, but it's only a matter of time til there is another huge deadly influenza outbreak. a few weeks ago i got to listen to a lecture about how the cdc is trying to model how something like this could spread. it was very interesting.

Well it also does not keep me up at night but I do worry about it. With several members of my family being high-risk just for a regular flu I really worry about a pandemic strain. I am afraid we would not all make it...the numbers are very scary.

Hmmmm...interesting read! I've been seeing articles about the potential of the bird flu and pandemic flu outbreak for several years now. Not to say it won't happen...but that is one heck of a bleak forecast! Yikes!

1/3 of the world's population is a HUGE estimate. But I do believe it's possible. Scary thought for sure!

I always try to keep in mind that the media does tend to play chicken little at times. They can really scare the heck out of everybody. This is one of those things that we don't have a lot of control over so I just try to keep informed but as the OP said, not allow it to keep me up at night.

I fall into the "high risk" category too, Becka. Hoping the "worst case" never happens.

Wasn't last winter the one where there was no vaccine and new strains of the flu. Yes, viral transmission from one species to another (AIDS?) is terrible, but I am not losing any sleep over this.
