Anyone else forget to hide the eggs last night?

:headache: DD8 jumped into bed with us this morning and my first thought was "OMG - I forgot to hide the eggs" (we were out for dinner last night and didn't get home until after midnight). I quickly make some wild hand gestures and DH grabs DD and challenges her to a Mario Kart battle. They disappear downstairs for 20 minutes while I madly hide eggs in the living room. When I'm done, I go downstairs to where DD8, DD10 (now up) and DH are sitting on the couch, and casually ask if the Easter Bunny had come last night. DD8 suddenly lights up (she'd thankfully forgotten it was Easter) and starts running around looking for eggs.

Of course, I know that she doesn't really believe anymore (she's made a few comments, and asked a few questions that I've evaded answering), but I'm not really ready to give up on the fun yet.

Anyone else do the mad scramble to hide eggs this morning?!:flower3:

The bunny didn't hide them, she was too tired. But in the past we have occasionally left them in a basket on the table for "Mom and Dad" to hide. So I left them in baskets and my 9 and 13 year old are taking turns hiding them and searching. I just told the 9 year old (who does still believe) that the bunny probably took one look at our kittens and realized it wouldn't be a good idea. Which is the truth-- they would have been playing with them all night long and undone my hiding, and probably hid them where we would never find them.

No, but I almost forgot to color them. Around six thirty, I realized I hadn't bought eggs. When I mentioned to DH that we still had to go buy them and color them he said, "You're kidding me, right?". Uh, no, we have a six year old and it's Easter.

We set our alarm and hide them early in the morning. Is it safe for the eggs to be sitting out all night? I don't want to risk it, since we do eat ours.

I would not leave them out all night, no way. I imagine someone will say it's ok, "Who knows how long the eggs are sitting out from when the hen lays them and the farmer picks them up, packs them up, and refrigerates them.." blah, blah..whatever. But I am a "better safe than sorry" type of gal and I say 2 hours out, max.

It's probably safe to eat them -- We've taken them on camping trips. But the Food Safety guidelines from Canada Health have changed on this:

Easter eggs: Decorating hard-boiled eggs at Easter is a popular activity. Decorated eggs that have been left out on display are not safe to eat. If you want to eat the eggs you decorate you should hard boil them thoroughly and then cool them (either by immersing them in cold tap water or on the counter until they have reached room temperature) before placing them in the fridge. Use a non-toxic colouring dye on eggs. Be sure that eggs are kept cold before and after dyeing. Between dyeing and cooling, they should be out of the refrigerator for no more than two hours in total. Coloured eggs can be stored in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to one week. The advice in your area might be different.

You colour the eggs? Interesting -- here we buy the plastic refillable eggs (for candy and non-candy treats) and the individually foil-wrapped chocolate eggs.

I didn't forget to hide the eggs, but when I was filling them last night I realized I had forgotten to buy non-candy items. Frantically stole a few from DD's room and filled 2 (she noticed there weren't any hairclips when she was checking out her finds), ran out to the pharmacy this am to get more and hid them while she was playing with her new toys. Luckily she took a break on the egg hunt to watch her new HSM3. :woohoo:

We do the plastic eggs with candy in them for the hunt. In the past I have been more creative with toys and hair stuff and even money, but I was lazy this year. We don't keep much junk food in the house so to have candy around is a big treat for them.

No one here eats hard boiled eggs so it is a waste to do them. We stopped coloring them a few years ago. The girls haven't asked to do it and I didn't offer!

Yep, we color around a dozen and a half. The Easter Bunny hides them for the kids to find in the morning (along with their Easter baskets). Later in the day, I hide the plastic eggs (they know it is I who hides them) that I've filled with little toys and candy. They're hidden out in the yard. The Easter Bunny hides the real eggs in the living room (though the stinker hid two in the home office this year!).

I woke up last night in the recliner at 2:00 a.m. It jumped in my head, luckily, that I had not put out the Easter baskets, so I got them out of my closet and took them upstairs to put in their hallway. (My puppy would have made short work of them if I left them on the hearth as usual;).) When I got up after sleeping in til 8:30, I walked over and looked upstairs-they had not been touched yet. My kids hadn't even come out of their room yet! So I called them over and they pounced on them. I don't know if they still believe, I think maybe my DS11 doesn't, but my DS9 wants to.

The Easter bunny brings the basket, I hold the egg hunt, which I did after they were up for a little while. That in addition to the 9 kid, 250 egg hunt I hosted in my cul-de-sac on Friday..I'm done with Easter this year, except for the 50% off sales tomorrow for candy that I didn't get!

Easter bunny hides the candy "bunny basket eggs"...same as when I was a kid :rolleyes1 They're a hard sugar shell with a marshmallow cream inside. I hated to eat them (too sweet), but then when I needed to help the E.B., I realized they were perfect for hiding. They're getting more difficult to find...

Anyone else do confetti eggs? That's what we do. It's a couple of months of saving shells but it's really worth it. The kids love to crack them over people heads, especially their parents!

I've never done that, but a little girl in my class said it's a common practice in Mexico where she is from.

He didn't forget to hide them, but we forgot to dye them. We were dying eggs at 9 last night!:headache:

I didn't dye any this year with my son (he's not quite 2 yet, so I think he wouldn't get it), but next year we will. I didn't dare hide the plastic ones last night - our Newfie thinks they're dog treats :lmao:

I had the worst time trying to find stuff to put in them! Candy is out (he's a diabetic), and most toys that fit in eggs aren't great for 2 year olds. I ended up filling them with popcorn :confused3

We dyed 8 dozen eggs!!!! We will hide them this afternoon at my MIL. Kids will hunt for them around 4pm. Of course my brilliant SIL decided it would be a great idea to tell her daughter (5) that the Easter Bunny isn't real. So if she tells my boys (5 and 7) I will be ticked!

Thank God for wine at family gatherings!

Jenny:)

Wow, that would be hard. I had a hard time finding stuff to fill them for my six year old. I got: bouncy balls, little footballs, parachute men, punching ballons (had some bigger eggs), a couple little pirates, a rubber Cars bracelet, tiny skateboards, army men, and stickers.

It almost happened to me. I was going to hide the eggs last night, but by the time my DS fell asleep, I was too lazy to go back downstairs to do it. We colored eggs earlier in the day, but I hide the plastic ones, not the real ones. I woke up early this morning to hide them, and to leave the little gifts from the Easter Bunny. Whew!

We hid them this morning. I have older kids that sleep in and so there is no need to hide them the night before. I had to wake up 2 of mine to even get the hunt started. It is almost noon here I think and we just finished up.

I didn't forget to hide them, but I'm torn between the tradition of hard-boiled dyed eggs nestled in the hidden baskets, and the dangers of bacteria growing in the unrefrigerated eggs. So I compromise... hide the baskets without the eggs, set my alarm for 6:00 and sneak around slipping the cold eggs into the hidden baskets.

I know, pathetic compromise. But there MUST be dyed hard-boiled eggs in the baskets and they MUST be hidden.

Here's the part that made me chuckle over this thread: I have been known, more than once, to forget where I hid the baskets. So there I am at 6:00, trying to be really quiet, searching madly for the baskets I hid 8 hours before...

I never hide them the night before. Our tradition is that when we leave in the morning, the eggs are on the table but when we get home, they are hidden and the easter baskets are out. Thank goodness DH always "forgets" something important on Easter:rotfl:

I didn't realize so many people actually hide real eggs! Even as a child, easter egg hunts always involved those little foil wrapped eggs (that actually taste rather disgusting). Since our only pets are a hamster and some birds, we don't need to worry about the eggs going bad or getting eaten before morning ;).
