Anyone else anti-tatoo?

So you're saying that people who disagree with your choices aren't entitled to an opinion. Isn't THAT judgemental?

No one said anyone's going around insulting people with tattoos. It's just a discussion about how many of us have a negative reaction to them.

I also don't like white cars, capri-pants, over-sized earrings, Blu cheese, Hardees, sandals that're part shoe, the game of basketball, the city of New Orleans, amusement park rides that go in circles, horror movies, Frank Lloyd Wright's architecture, visible underwear, bling-y type jewelry, Sprite, rap music, and even more things! Does that make me boring? Does it mean I don't have hobbies or a place in my community? Nope, it means I have likes and dislikes . . . OPINIONS!

What your missing is the difference between having an opinion of tattoos and making judgments about people who have them.

You should post pics :D. I love tattoos, I have 4 of them with more to come. My next one is going to be a calf piece with my daughter's birth flower, a frog (one of my favorite animals) and her name and birthdate. I can't wait :). I too am prior military, and I'm starting my internship with a gov't intelligence agency in the spring. They don't care that I have tattoos, or colored hair for that matter.

Have you seen the Disney Tattoos thread here??? I am going to post pics but my back piece isn't completed yet. I have a small ankle tat and pretty much my whole back will be covered when it's finished. AND, I'm getting ready to get both wrists done, PATIENCE and BREATHE written in Hebrew.

I am not a fan of tatoos either. They do nothing for me. I just don't find them attractive at all - on men or women. Just not my thing.

I always think, "Imagine what that thing will look like when that person is in their 80's" :scared1:

Many people like them, but I don't.

Ask my grandmother - she got her first tattoo at the age of 85... :goodvibes

No, you're assuming that because I don't like tattoos that I also think people who choose to have them are . . . I don't know, stupid? I'm capable of disliking the tattoos without believing that the person who has one is completely summed up by that one choice.

I know a couple people whom I like who have tattoos.
I know a bunch of people I dislike who have tattoos.

I have two small tattoos (in places I can't see without mirrors ;) ) and I've yet to care what anyone thinks about them. Just like people probably don't care what I think about fanny packs, having an 80's hairdo in 2010, mom jeans, wearing socks with sandals, and tapered pants. I don't look at anyone differently just because they choose to do or wear things that I wouldn't. I personally wouldn't get anymore tattoos, a sleeve of tattoos, etc. as I am aware of how tattoos and body piercings are perceived by corporate America, but I don't think that makes a person any less of a good hearted, considerate, hard working person than I am if that's what they choose to do (even if I don't find their particular tattoos attractive). If they end up regretting it then it's their regret to deal with.

But my point wasn't just to you. There are plenty of people in this thread making judgement about people with tattoos.

Not a fan, would never get one, but don't judge others that do. However, I do wonder if they'll ever regret it.

A couple of generations ago, certain social circles thought that pierced earrings on girls were terribly tacky. Times do change.....

Like a PP said, I think you're missing the point. Some of the comments here about tattoos are, "how dumb" "disgusting" "repulsive" "unprofessional" "hepatitis" people making judgements about others. What you are saying is that you don't like white cars, you are not saying that you think everyone who drives a white car is "unprofessional" you are not calling the lady down the street in capris "repulsive" being judgemental and having likes and dislikes is apples and oranges.

I don't necessarily agree with this because you can't have a tattoo without having it ON your body...so in essence it's the same. I think the tattoo is part of who they are...and most of them are very proud of it. It's not to say in the least that I won't fall in love with that person or they could become my best friend (both are the case with me...DH and best friend both have tattoos)...but I at first did form a "judgement" based on their tattoos before I got to know them.

I think they are hideous. On everyone. My sister has one and a good friend has a few. I certainly don't think less of them as people because they have them. But I think they are terribly unattractive and will never understand the appeal.

.... and you are blameless from having a hairstyle/some clothing/etc. that other people think is "terribly unattractive" and/or hideous?

I am not anti Tattoo. I really wanted to get one with my friends in college but opted not to at that point.

Four years later when I had to have radiation after having had my lung removed due to cancer I ended up with six tattoos. Six dots that will forever be on my body reminding me of what I went through.

It was then that I decided hey if I am going to live the rest of my life with these dots I might as well have something I want. So I did get a tattoo on my back near the scar from my lung removal.

I love it! That tattoo and the ones form my radiation represent things that I have gone through in my life. Things that people truly do not understand unless they have been there.

I hope that I get to live long enough to see what it looks like at 80. I mean what an adventure! After all I nearly died from cancer at 27 -- if all I have to worry about is what my tattoo will look like at 80 then I am truly leading a blessed life.

So no, tattoos do not repulse me. They are a persons way of expressing themselves. You can never know waht a persons tattoos mean to them - unless you ask them.

This is exactly what I mean!

As I said upthread, I think anyone who has kids has made a hideous choice. Does that give me the right to judge you?

Sure! Everyone has the right to judge. And trust me, I'm sure everyone who is a parent has had days where they've questioned whether they made a hideous choice.:rotfl2:

I am sure people judge me all day long...it's ok. But once people get to know me, then they can form an opinion as to whether or not they like me for who I am. And if they don't? It's ok...I am ok not being liked by everyone.

.... and you are blameless from having a hairstyle/some clothing/etc. that other people think is "terribly unattractive" and/or hideous?

I am certain my hair and clothes are hideous to someone, somewhere. No style is attractive to *everyone*. I don't care what they think anymore than what someone with a tattoo should care about what *I* think. It is an opinion. No more. No less.

Err, and I'm pretty sure the meaning was "I'm not judging you based on your tattoos, just saying I don't like tattoos" there... so no, you shouldn't just judge someone based on how many kids they have just because you don't like kids, any more than someone should judge you based on how many tattoos you have because they don't like tattoos!

Or am I actually reading that wrong? :confused3

Well, that's sort of the point. Why have an anti-tattoo thread then? Should we have anti-mullet threads? (OK, probably yes). Should we have ugly outfit threads?

Making people feel bad about their appearance is never okay.

I think Jimmy Buffett summed it up best:
The Indian on her back was poised for an attack,
She said a tattoo is a badge of validation,
But the truth of the matter is far more revealing,
It's a permanent reminder of a temporary feeling.

I don't think there's any artwork that's hung in our house for more than 10 years and I can't imagine a design that I'd want to look at on my body for the rest of my life. There's nothing about the thought of tattoo's on me or seeing them on other that I even find remotely appealing. It's also going to be interesting to see what happens when they become passe again... as all pop culture does.

Well, I am a single mother, 28, member of the PTO, cheerleading coach, GS Troop leader, dance mom, who is prior military, works for the federal government and has a college degree. Hmmm, I guess you would hate to see my back and ankle?!?!?!? :lmao: :rotfl2: LOL
I think we already established that.

If people stopped being so judgemental, the world would be a better place for everyone. :confused3 I feel sorry for those of you that worry so much about what other people look like, you must live a very boring life- get a hobby or volunteer in your community, then you won't have so much time to spend worrying about anyone elses' choice of lifestyle.
Whoa - No one "judged" tattoo-wearers about their lifestyle choices. The tattoo defenders are the ones being judgemental in this thread and they're attacking other posters. You have no right to judge how busy or active anyone is just because they noticed your colors. If you didn't want the attention, you wouldn't have done it and worn revealing clothing.

When I'm wearing a dress or top that reveals my back, or shorts/skirt, I get 100's of compliments on my art. Just thought I'd share.
Most people (with or without tattoos) are too polite to come up to a stranger and say "Why did you mutilate yourself like that? Ugh, cover up." Some people probably think it, but they don't want to say something and be told that they're "judgemental."

So you're saying that people who disagree with your choices aren't entitled to an opinion. Isn't THAT judgemental?

No one said anyone's going around insulting people with tattoos. It's just a discussion about how many of us have a negative reaction to them.
It's a good discussion so far. I don't understand why people feel the need to attack others just because they don't agree with their opinions.

What your missing is the difference between having an opinion of tattoos and making judgments about people who have them.

I think that was directed at me. I do feel that tattooed food service workers are a health risk. Having bested two Hepatitis scares and still being able to donate blood, I stand by my opinion. So far, none of the Health Code experts have convinced me that a food service worker is immune to contracting, and passing on, the Hepatitis disease. It's like salmonella poisoning - there are too many gaps in the system and by the time the health dept reacts, it's usually too late to stop the transmission.
