My husband and I did the tour with our 7 year old son during the June 22 cruise. We were the only participants that day. The tour was short and informative. The miner demonstrated historical and more modern methods for extracting gold from the mine, and answered any questions you might have. There was time to wander around and look at various tools of the trade or try your hand at panning. Everyone who worked at the mine was friendly and helpful. The highlight was the gold panning (for my son) - the young people who worked there helped him find a "sizable" flake of gold (big enough to see with the naked eye.) Overall, it was kind of short and sweet. Worth the time and money, but I wouldn't necessarily choose it over something else that interests your family.
