With the flu shot shortage, I was thinking of getting my family the flumist. We are taking our first disney cruise in February. I have soooooo been dreaming and saving for this cruise for 2 years now and I am so scared someone will come down with the flu. I probably would not even be concerned about getting a shot if it wasn't for this cruise in the peak of flu season...February........Any thoughts? Anyone getting the flumist?

I had tried to get my prescription for it filled a couple times but to no avail :( Target never even bothered to call me saying they couldn't so I showed up a week later and was given a bag with my prescription sheet in it! I had a few choice words for them not notifying me.

Hoping that after I see the doc Tuesday he'll okay a flu shot for me. Been diagnosed with a respiratory prob that falls in the category to get one. If there is any left..

What I can relay is that the flu mist is made from a live virus. It is possible to develop the flu from the flu mist unlike from the shot because it is made differently. That's the generic of what the doctor explained to me. Talk to your doctor, only way you can get it anyway is with a prescription. I plan to have one or the other before sailing at the beginning of april even if it means a trip to canada.

Good luck :)

Nobody in my house is in the "At Risk" catagories. That is why the Flumist is our only alternative. I realize it is "Live" virus but all the reading I have done on it, they say it does not give you the Flu. In our state of Michigan you do not need a perscription. You can go to the pharmacy and they will administer it to you.

It is much "wetter" than a nasal spray that you would use for congestion. I felt like a lot dripped out but doctor said that was normal. I would think it would be uncomfortable for anyone who hasn't had the "practice" of using nasal sprays. FYI there is an over-the-counter saline mist that you can use to see how you tolerate the whole "inhalation thing." Good Luck. Good handwashing habits go a long way. I am a parent in the medical profession and have been amazed at the number of illnesses that have NOT passed between my children. Recently one had a nasty stomach virus that I fully anticipated getting (from the amounts of hugs I had to give my daugther) but I did not (Yea!).
