Anyone cruising on points and buy your own travel insurance?

Booked the Western Cruise today for Oct. '05. Would like to buy travel insurance, and know I need to do it within 14 days to have pre-existing conditions covered. Has anyone bought travel insurance when cruising on points? How do you determine or "prove" the cost of your trip?

DVC offers a travel insurance plan that is designed for use with points. Reimbursement is $5 per point.

I'd be careful buying from anyone else. Make sure you determine in advance how they would reimburse. Usually they reimburse lost deposits, that is a tangible figure.

Is that all the DVC insurance covers, $5 per point? I also need insurance that will cover medical problems, either before the cruise, causing us to have to cancel, or during the cruise.

You will get a flyer with your confirmation describing all the available coverages.

Thanks. Anyone else? Anyone use points to cruise and buy their insurance from someone OTHER than Disney?

I do not know how the insurance companies work on figuring trip costs when using points to pay for it. You might want to call them or drop an email to their customer service online.

However, I recently purchased travel insurance for a cruise we have scheduled for this coming August (needed medical and other coverages as well) - the price was very reasonable - kids included free - you can plug in some info on this page and get a quick quote just to check - Travelex Insurance

Travel insurance is for costs. The big problem with points is getting the agency to understand there is a cost....

I have used www.insuremytrip.com to research insurance for other trips.

The insurance DVC offers provides several different options. You will need to buy the insurance on the points to get the medical insurance, but I found the price competitive with other insurance companies (it was a bit more, but the fact that the insurance covered your points whereas most other companies will not is a factor). You might also try to call the insurance company that insures for DVC directly. I have used them for non-point vacations and they have been good.

Before our first cruise on points I called two other insurance companies-one said no, they wouldn't cover for points, and the second, well I talked to the rep that answered the phone and then his supervisor, and still don't think they understood "points." I gave up and used the Disney insurance. FWIW-My folks were on the same cruise (cash) and per person their insurance was only a few dollars less.
