Anyone concerned about the "mosquito" talk?

We are a bit concerned about a December trip - but for those who live in Florida, how much mosquito activity is there really over the winter? We have consistently gone in December year-after-year and have never seen a single mosquito from what I can recall.

We always go the first 10 days of December (give or take on the arrival day) and have definitely seen mosquitoes. While waiting for the Dwarfs at the parties, we have been bitten by them until putting on some spray (OFF). When hanging out by Dumbo's circus waiting to meet Minnie, same thing. While waiting in line for Splash and Big Thunder, same thing. They are definitely out in December. It just is not cool enough outside to make them go dormant, move away, etc.

I put this link up under the Disney for Families section under the latest Zika post. Here are the odds for contracting Zika...in Brazil....which has a higher concentration that Florida. The odds are ridiculous.

https://www.casino.org/zika-odds/

I have a better chance of dying from eating chicken noodle soup than contracting the virus.

If you're down there, just protect yourself and listen to what people say about avoiding them.

Brazil has admitted that Zika is not the cause of all of the birth defects cases. If you read up on it (research something other than main stream media and the CDC), you will see that what you say about the odds are correct. However, I would still be concerned about West Nile, but that is just me. I have a compromised immune system.

I am 43 and have no interest in having babies. I am not worried about it. If I were 25 and wanting a family, I would stay home to be honest.

You do know they are finding issues with Zika that affect the general adult population and not just pregnant or planning to be pregnant women, right? And that contracting zika can seriously affect your immune system, and possibly have an impact on your chances of certain MH issues (as per previous link)

Just came home from WDW. Did not see one mosquito our entire week and we had a lot of rain. Stayed at POR and there was a good amount of standing water after a thunderstorm. That being said...there are spraying stations. Enjoy your trip!

Zika - the new Ebola.

You could also contract TB from those travelling to WDW from overseas.

Take normal precautions and enjoy your trip!

We just got back Friday night and both my son and I got bitten by mosquitoes, after that evening I sprayed us. I had brought a can of bug spray there and came back to the room one afternoon and found they had left one as well. I didn't think they really had mosquitoes in Florida this time of year but sure enough they are there.

I'm not looking to get pregnant so wasn't overly concerned but I understand why Disney is taking such an aggressive policy as to provide bug spray.

I saw quite a few locations with free bug spray. we didn't use it and neither of us were bit, after 16 nights in the area (4 at universal, 12 at WDW)
when we first started going to disney, I read that you should bring bug spray. I finally stopped bothering.. my hubby is a mosquito magnet, and in over 20 trips neither on of us have ever been bitten by a mosquito. and nebo is usually are designated decoy lol. (his blood must be sweet..gack)

Not at all - I quoted AN actual article and an actual piece of advice from a consultant physician. We are not big on worrying about health scares, and travel extensively. However, specific issues have been raised with this particular illness, that can affect people who might not realise they would be affected. This is particularly important for people like my husband who is immune-compromised, but, is also important for other people to at least CONSIDER. We are not stopping travelling, we are not recommending cancelling plans (unless your own physician recommends it) but, it is important to understand that the risks are not just to pregnant women or those considering becoming pregnant. Maybe knowing this will encourage more adults who are NOT in those categories to consider using repellant, or at least to decide not to with more information.

We already have to take higher than normal precautions. My husband has leukaemia, and is taking his children to the place he got married (i.e. WDW) as the last big holiday he does. Therefore we already know to take *reasonable* precautions against things that other people might not have to think about so much as he has a significantly impaired immune system. Zika, however, DOES have implications for people OTHER than pregnant or trying to become pregnant women, such as reducing immunity further, or causing mental health issues in certain people. Repellant is a way to protect yourself without limiting your plans.

I am not trying to get pregnant anytime soon so I wasn't worried. Even if I had been, Disney now has "mosquito protection" tables set up all over the parks with complementary bug spray, so you can stay protected throughout the day. I didn't use it once and I came away from the trip with exactly 1 bug bite. I don't even think its a mosquito bite!

I was really referring to the population's response. If it's not Ebola it is alligators...if not alligators it is mosquitoes.

As I responded to another poster last week, if you do REAL research, not listen mainstream media or listen to what the gvmt is telling you, you will find that Brazil has admitted that Zika is NOT to blame for all of the birth defects.

As for mosquitoes and Disney, I always use repellent. I am super sweet and they love me and my compromised immune system is not interested in anything they want to share.

Hmmm, thanks for this. Now I think I really need to reconsider our December plans.

Didn't read the whole tread but there is a case in Tampa now from MacDill AFB. The military hospital confirmed a case from someone who traveled overseas in July. They are not releasing if the person is military, civilian, or what county they live in. Some people do commute to MacDill from the Orlando and Lakeland area. A few of my co-workers did.

That is quite a lot of areas! I'm more concerned about all the spray as I walk past these areas than I am of Zika. Bad enough with the spray sunscreen people use while in the park. Too bad they don't hand out the wipes instead of spray.

There's now lotion in addition to the spray at these stations.

It seems that although the majority of the concern over Zika is geared toward pregnant or potentially/future pregnant folks, there has also been some potential concern voiced for the general population as well. I've seen this presented specifically regarding those with weakened immunity (or that it weakens immunity?), potential future mental health concerns, guillain-barre syndrome, and all the general "unknowns" regarding the disease. I'm curious what people are thinking about these general population concerns... do you think they have merit? Our family is planning to travel to Disney in December and I am trying to process this through the lens of how it impacts our children. I don't want to be an alarmist, yet I also don't want to dismiss potential health threats for them with Zika. Please share your perspective! Anyone concerned about this for you/your family? Enough so to consider postponing? I realize that these are personal/family choices based on what people think is best for them... no judgement of others, just your thoughts :). Thanks!!
